Who do you think is the best guitar player of all time?
I think it is Jimi Hendrix. Others that I think are good are Duane Allman, Zakk Wylde, Jimmy Page, Slash, Angus Young, and Kirk Hammond.
Can there really be any doubt that Andrés Segovia was the greatest of all guistarists?

i thought about it and naa, there can never be a 'whos the best guitar player' ever cause then it would all be based on personal judgement and favourites. Playing guitar is not a sport rather an art form so you cant say this piece of art is better than that piece of art. Now if your asking who ARE the most influencial guitar players, well then theyve been posted in this here thread.

This is the Unexplained forum right???
A thread on guitarists and no mention of Hendrix and the Aliens?? Not a word about the "Curse of Eric Clapton"? and not one person mentioning Ollie Halsall who, was the man who gave rock n roll the four fingered left hand technique.. Until you have heard "Blue" by "Kevin Ayers" and the solo that Halsall plays on that, you seriously ain't heard anything.
Oh and SRV took Clapton's seat on the helicopter.... James Marshall claimed he was visited by Aliens
BTW Clapton, not a patch on Kossoff or Green.... period.... he should have made a better deal
Just a little plug.... click the link at the bottom of this post and get a listen to Chris from my band.. The guitar on "Star City" and "She speaks to Angels" is pretty good...

I think the best guitarist is either Randy Rhoads or Marty Friedman. I don't base this on how technical they both are (Marty is a god in technicality), but instead how unique their respective playing styles are or were. Marty could play circles around Rhoads when he was at the same age (hell, compare Speed Metal Symphony to Crazy Train), but Rhoads was better at rhythm and soloing. He could invent killer rhythms and solo all over them! Marty was never a shining rhythm player (his latest work in solo album Future Addict is about as good as Rhoads was in Quiet Riot), but his leads can run circles around anyone I've ever seen. Again, I'm not talking sheer speed... that'd probably go to Malmsteen or Batio. Marty's leads were special, he did these middle eastern scales and just went crazy in-between them everywhere he could. I mean, he'd place ten or fifteen pull-offs and hammer-ons in a twenty five note scale. Not only that, but aside from his middle eastern scales, he was also classically influenced (and especially by Rhoads!) and could make neoclassical solos that were far beyond any simple shred solos or neoclassical shredding.
But, you know, nothing lasts forever. Rhoads had it easy: he died after making two killer albums with Ozzy. Marty wasn't so lucky: he moved to Japan.
Ah well, only the truly good die "young." Let's put a spin on that and say that up to around forty is young just so we can include Stevie Ray Vaughan. But yeah, other than these two, the best innovators have probably been Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Young... I just happen to think that merging classical into metal is more important than blatant blues ******y (Clapton, Young), more important than re-doing blues songs and not crediting the creators (Page), and more important than being an inventive lead player (Hendrix). It's worth saying, though, that these guys are in a higher realm because of how they set the pace for my rock gods.

On the subject of guitars;
Fenders. Bit of a fender fan so it's kinda sad when i heard the company eventually sold out to the Japanese mid to early eighties (Leo Leo Leo

) I guess it explains why a lot of
Signature Strats started popping up not long after to try & recapture the roots of that genuine classic American Rock sound (rosewood fretboards,, maple necks etc etc). That's why anyone owning one, especially pre 1965...err your laughing!...all the way to the bank even.

What would be the criteria that would have to be met in order to be the 'Greatest'?
I would say:
Great tone
Passion
Able to play through difficult progressions
Speed & accuracy of technique
Innovation
Three players come to mind
Jeff Beck
John McLaughlin
Robert Fripp
And me of course (that's 4)

yes, if anyone gets the chance have a listen to Jeff Beck's
Guitar Shop (mostly instrumental) It has all the above mentioned, the man is a guitar maestro.
As for John McLaughlin, I've read it quoted
(Guitar World Magazine/back issues) by legends like Clapton, Eddie Van Halen etc as one of the greatest influential of all time.

"Can't pick just one.
That like saying pick the greatest painter of all time. They are good for
different reasons.
Put Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Brain Setzer, Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert,
Buckethead, Dick Dale, Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Reverend Horton Heat. That just the
beginning."

I'm coming into this thread late, and have skimmed over, but here are my top five, in no real order. I can't put them in order because it would almost be unfair to do so.
1. Stevie Ray Vaughn
2. Mark Knopfler
3. Jimmy Page
4. Dave Navarro
5. Lindsay Buckingham
I feel like I have to explain Dave and Lindsay, only because my husband gave me a weird look when I read these out to him just now.
Dave Navarro gets no credit because he's pretty, and starred in a reality show. If you throw some headphones on and listen to any Jane's Addiction album, but particularly Nothing's Shocking, you will see why. Having seen him perform live, my respect only grew for him.
Most people don't think of epic guitar when they listen to Fleetwood Mac, but Lindsay is one of the greats who tends to be underrated as well.
