Found this article, could it of been a bear? What do you think?

By Casey Allgood

This happened to me when I was 17 (now 24) in Southern Missouri near the small town of Forsyth. My cousin and I were staying the weekend at a cabin that our family owns in the Mark Twain National Forest. It was about 10:30 at night and we were just sitting in the back room playing Playstation and talking. Suddenly, my cousin sat up with a frightened look on his face and turned around and looked out the window behind us. I asked him what was wrong and he said, "Something was looking at us from outside the window."

Normally, I would have laughed it off because of his past history of playing pranks and goofing around, but his face was as pale as a corpse. Alarmed, I asked him what it looked like. He said he only saw it for a second and didn't get a good look, but it wasn't human looking at all. He said that when the TV screen went black to load the next stage of the video game, he could see the reflection of the window on the screen. A few moments later my dog, a large rottweiler began barking and growling in the front room. We ran out there and he was frozen solid staring at the door, growling.

I was scared by this time. We stood and stared at the door for a few minutes and nothing happened. I went to the bedroom and grabbed my .22 rifle I had brought along. I walked over and slowly opened the front door and told my dog to "GET 'EM!" Normally this dog would have rushed outside and raised hell with whatever was out there, but he just stood there whimpering and cowering by me. He would not get within five feet of that door. After about five minutes of trying to get my dog to go out, we heard something on the roof. It sounded like something ran from the back of the house to the front. I was scared to death, but curious. We worked up enough courage to walk out onto the front deck. The front deck has a large overhang and sets about five feet off of the ground. We stood on the deck for a few moments. We saw something from the corner of our eyes drop from the roof to the ground and heard it go under the porch.

I said something along the lines of, "Is someone there? I have a gun! You better leave us alone!" Then I heard the most frightening sound I have ever heard in my life. Whatever was under the porch let out a high-pitched scream that lasted only a few seconds. We quickly ran back inside. We continued to hear whatever the thing was outside scurry around outside the cabin. None of the windows in the cabin had blinds or curtains, which made me feel twice as uneasy.

We stayed in the cabin the rest of the night with the lights on, sitting in a corner away from the windows with the gun fully loaded and ready to fire on this thing if it decided it wanted to come inside. We heard a lot of scratching sounds coming from the back door and sounded like the door knob was trying to turn. We heard more scratching coming from the back room where we were at earlier. Finally, the noises stopped and we heard nothing for about four hours. We continued to wait until the sun came up.

It had been daylight for about two hours. We went outside and looked around the cabin. On the back door, there were deep scratch marks and also on the window of the back room their were deep scratch marks on the window pane. We could not find any foot prints because it was fall and there were leaves all over the ground. We packed up our stuff and left in a hurry. Later, I asked my cousin to describe what he had seen in the window. He said he didn't get a good look, but it was a tanish brown color with beady black eyes no hair and sharp teeth. He said that it was grinning at him when he saw it. He said about as soon as he turned around and looked, it quickly ducked down.

This is something that is burned into my mind for the rest of my life. Just typing this has giving me that same feeling of terror I had seven years ago. I have never shared this story with anyone, not even my family. My cousin and I haven't spoken of it since that day. I figured I would share it here because everyone here has had a similar experience and would not call me insane.

Well what a creapy story ! Well it could be a bigfoot or a chupa. I dont think it's a bear because he says that the beast has no hair ! Perhaps a bold bear ! grin2.gif
bathory
i dunno why but the description that it grinned at the cousing makes it oh so much scarier
Boff
souds like something out of a horror movie, by god that scared me.

It could have been a shaved gorilla, but it said that it jumped or somehow got onto the roof and moved quickly, if this was a bear or gorilla it might have fallen throught the roof. Also, wonder if its possible to get the person who saw it to do some sort of portrait? even if its crude its better then nothing. But still the thought of it above you is better than it below you near things like support beams...etc. I don't think that I saw any where in the above report, but doe any one know or as found out what size is it or its standing posture?

I think the scariest part of the story is a 17year old with a Rifle!

Sounds like an episode of Scare Tactics.

i think it was a panther. he could have mistaken the tanish brown fur for hairless skin, since it sits close ot the face. they has sharp teeth, of course, and when its mouth is open it seems to grin. we even call this the 'cat grin'. it could easily have climbed up on the roof. they make really scary hissing/screeching noises like te ones in the story. it could have also easily made the scratches in the door. pantheres are big, it could have jumped up with its paws on the window-cill and looked in. my house cats do this alot.

The only flaw to this.. is the dog not wanting to go near it.

Dogs will willingly chase cougars, they always have. This would be the first I've ever heard of a dog cowerding from one.

But yes, it could have been one. Thought to think of it.. I don't think they can leave deep scratches in the window...

If you think that's scary, watch the movie Bowling for Columbine...

Anyway, that was quite a spooky story. Does sound like something out of a horror movie... maybe too much like a horror movie?

Well, one of my dogs is a downright wimp, that gets chased BY your everyday housecat. w00t.gif All dog's are different, so it's possible this one did not want to chase it as it was too scared to...

It's got to be a WILD SLOTH! Those things fit the bill, Big claws for scratching, tannish fur, they climb like crazy, and have a BIG STUPID GRIN! They may move slow, but they can throw they're voice to appear in many places at once!

As for the screeching sound, the sloth probably had a chalkboard hanging out under the deck he was scraping at. They were really lucky, they survived a sloth attack! Ahhh! eyecrazy.gif

I could have been anything, who know's whats out in the woods, and if it were a bear, they were lucky whistling2.gif

Somehow, I get the feeling this one wasn't a whimp.

ROFL my dad had a huge shepherd/lab mix who would fight off anything, but would still get beat up by our cats!

ah, a sloth in missouri. very good.

as for hte dog chasing the panther, most times dogs will chase them, but what if a dog never ran into one? this was in missouri, they dont have alot of panthers, syco will tell you, and the dog probably freaked when he saw it.
SilverCougar
It's a territorial thing. Dog in his "pack leader's" territory. Will deffend said Territory.

But, who knows. I'm not totaly saying it's not a cougar, but then again, are there many cougar sightings in Missery? er..Missouri. (an accual question ;P chill chill)

First of all, I don't believe panthers behave this way (harassing its prey like the story describes); but what really gets me is that a panther has a natural fear of dogs (it's in there DNA or something like that.) so I doubt it would stick around a long time with a dog barking near by.

Hi

I found a good site all about Sloths:

http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/1478/sloth.html

I cannot see it being a Sloth though because they have long hair and walk around really slowly. This thing would need to be quick and agile to be jumping up and down on the roof. I still feel like Man in Mudboots said it was more likely to be a Panther.

What makes me laugh a little is that in stories such as these the people concerned always have a big mad brute of a dog with them that then cowers away in the corner. original.gif

Perhaps it was a ninja sloth ohmy.gif

Any way, it could have been an insane hobo or hermit?, who thinks he is a wierd animal or something

Actually, I did read the story. I'm not saying it wasn't a panther, I'm just saying that I highly doubt it.

So... if the dog normaly would have bolted out and "raised hell" Why didn't he this time? Puzzling...

I was just kidding with the sloth thing. Its ridiculous, sloths are such gentle peaceful animals. rolleyes.gif

I love the Sloth website Lottie! I think sloths are awesome, and I also know of a good sloth site!Sloth's REAL ULTIMATE POWER! thumbsup.gif It's not a very informational site, but its funny. laugh.gif

I think the animal they saw was a hungry racoon. Seriously this time.
