has anyone read "The Great Gatsby"? I'm starting to read it for a class, and it seems like a good story. we read "Winter Dreams" before, which is a supposed rough draft on the other book. If the Great Gatsby is anything like winter dreams, then im sure it will be a good read.
[EDIT] what are your thoughts on the book, if you've read it?

I read "To Kill A Mockingbird" last week and this week I am re-reading "Black House" ( not be confused with "Bleak House" By Dickens ) by Peter Shruab and Stephen King, it's the follow-up to "The Talisman" by the same two authors.

Read to page 14 'cause that's the best part, then for the love of God, DON'T READ ANY MORE!!!! I just finished it over Christmas break, and was very disappointed in the ending (sorry, but I thought you'd like a warning...). I loved the three or four other books I read by him, and this one was entertaining enough for the most part. The ending was just bad, though, really really bad, and it ruined the whole book for me

more pages.

My wife and I read it to each other when we were going through our foster parent training years ago.
That is required reading for folks that are considering adoption. Wow it is incredibly sad to see what happens to kids that have been treated so poorly. It is a good book, but something that you have to prepare yourself for.

No harm in being prepared.

It's pretty good. Written from the perspective that countless zombie outbreaks have happened in the past, and we've learned from them. It covers a variety of subjects not just related to ghouls which is actually really informative. There's entire sections devoted to terrain types, melee weapons and firearms, vehicles, fortifying your home, on the run, etc etc as well as hunting zombies, the genetic makeup of zombies, and best tactics for battling and escaping them.
I recommend it, but it's more like a factual survival guide with zombies than abit of lighthearted bedtime reading.

I think that it sounds like fun, I will have to check amazon and see if I can get a hold of a cheap copy...
One of the funny jokes that my wife and I have going back and forth is that when we were out looking to purchase our first home together we were looking at a few houses up in the mountains up above Los Angeles. One of the houses that we were looking at was on a hillside that was fairly steep so the only access to the house was via a walkway that went from the driveway, around the side of the house and to the front door. The house was situated such that all of the other winders were at least 20 feet off of the ground. The door was the only access point and by securing it; the house was safe from being broken into.
Commenting on that fact, i told my wife that I like the configuration because it was nice and secure and would be easy to protect from home break ins; I added jokingly; and the hoards of zombies trying to get into the house.
Ever since then the "protectability factor" of the houses we have looked at has been referred to as the "Zombie Factor", just an little inside joke between the two of us.
More times than I can count we have used that term in front of Realtors when looking at homes to buy...it gets the oddest looks...we have to explain what we mean by it so that people don't think we are kooks...

hahaha that's awesome! 'hrrmm.. nice place, spacious, nice neighbourhood.. dunno about the zombie factor tho..'

I thought the Screwtape Letters were interesting. Not dying to re-read it, but liked the idea of it.
I caught the mini-series 'IT' on TV this weekend, so I have dug the novel out and am re-reading it. I used to be a huge Stephen King fan back in my angsty teen years, and get in the horror novel mood sometimes.

-In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. AWESOME, definitely a must-read
-The Catcher in the Rye. A must-read too
-Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. Not a jewel but a really funny book. In fact, I liked this book more than The DaVinci Code.
Right now I'm reading "Portraits" by Truman Capote. It contains, amongst other things, the portrait he made of Marlon Brandon when he visited him during the filming of Sayonara and some of the portraits he wrote in a book with Richard Avendon (if I'm right). Just starting though

I am Reading Desperation by Stephen King

QUOTE
Desperation, the spiritual state of unbelief.
Desperation, a state of hopelessness leading to unregulated behavior.
Desperation, a small mining town in Nevada, just off Highway 50, the lonliest highway in the U.S.
Something is wrong in Desperation, very wrong. Something is loose in Desperation, very loose. Something ancient, something evil, something unformed. Tak!

Gosh, I haven't seen you in a while.
I'm reading
Angels and Demons - pretty good. I haven't gotten far but I've decided (after also reading Da Vinci Code) that he comes up with great stories but he really isn't much of a writer.
Elvenborn - 3rd in a series that I'm really enjoying. A good fantasy that I'd recommend.
A Case for a Creator - bit of non fiction that I'm reading for a thread here. Not getting very far seeing as I'm trying to read the other two plus a friend has lent me another (Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrel) to read. Anyone read Jonathon Strange? Is it good?
