I just finished reading "Faery Tale" by Raymond Feist.
For a writer mostly known for writing fantasy this is a surprising King-esque thriller-fantasy. It is not situated in a fictive word, but actually in our real one, at about the time it was written ('88 I believe)
It was slow to start but the finish really captured me (as in most King-novels)

I read Odd Thomas - the first one, I haven't red Brother Odd yet, I will get the book though. I loved Odd Thomas, even my husband who doesn't read Dean Koontz books thought it was great.
The last two books I read were The Exorcism of Annaleise Michel and Hostage to the Devil.
If anyone ever came into my house and saw my book collection they would probably think me a right wierdo LOL

I just started reading "Condensed Chaos: An Introduction to Chaos Magic" by Phil Hine.
Yes, it's an 'Occult' book so people could debate for days whether it's fiction or non, but it's written as non.
I'm not very far in yet, but the subject of the book (Chaos Magic) is apparently the practice of magic at its core, stripped of unnecessary dogma and fantasy, except when momentarily believing dogma/fantasy serves as an effective means to an end. I like it, it seems to draw backing from Quantum Physics, but I know nothing of the field so I can't tell just how accurately it draws.

Hi Isis
Yes I did enjoy The Exorcism of Annaliese Michel, I would recommend it if you like this sort of thing too, especially as it was a true story. I got the book off Amazon, the Author is Felicitas D Goodman. There is a lot more detail in the book than the film "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" had, bearing in mind the film was very sympathetic to the true story.
Worth getting!

The Sparrow and Children of God, by Mary Doria Russell:
earth intercepts signals from an alien world, not mathematical but musical, alien voices in song. while the governments of earth debate what to do, the catholic church sends jesuits to this world.
"they meant no harm".
mary doria russell had never written fiction before, she was an academic and technical writer. but she had dreams of mutilated hands, and this story grew from that dream.
these two books are at the top of my all-time best books list.
for a light read, Telegraph Days, by Larry McMurtry; also his Berrybender series. hysterically funny....

Is the book better than the movie? Because I watched about a half hour of those apes in the beginning and had to stop. How anyone sits through all that I'll never know.
If the book is more interesting I might give it a go.

One of my favourite books
If anyone can find it, read Mercy By David Lyndsay. Brilliant.
If you like James Patterson, try reading Val McDermid, she's good too.
I am reading Scar Tissue at the moment by Anthony Kiedis...Its taking me AGES...I just can't get into it. I know an autobiography is about 'yourself' but I have never read one that is so self indulgent and where someone kisses their own bum soooo much. The struggle with addiction is interesting but when it comes to Women and Music I just have to put it down!.

In the middle of "Insomnia" by Stephen King........
an excellent book with ties to the Dark Tower.
About an old fella who starts suffering from Insomnia after his Wife's death only to gain perception and vision into an underlying Universe .
Meanwhile the town of Derry is on the brink from a group of radical pro lifers and an icon of the Women's lib movement is coming to town to give a speech supporting a Women's clinic and shelter operating in Derry.
Needless to say, the old fella suffering from Insomnia soon realizes that happenings in this newly visible underlying Universe and the powder keg situation in Derry are not mutually exclusive.
Great King as usual

"The Ballad Of Frankie Silver" Sharyn McCrumb
In 1831 Frankie Silver, a "likely little woman" of eighteen was charged with the murder of her young husband Charlie in their frontier cabin in Mitchell County, North Carolina. Charlie Silver lies in three graves in the Silver family cemetery there. They didn't find him all at once…
On July 12, 1833, Frankie Silver became the first woman in the state of North Carolina to be hanged for murder. Was she guilty? go
