I beleive this may be the one of the most awe inspiring, yet little known cryptids of all time. Aincent Chilean folklore tells of a unimaginably huge monster that lives deep in the bowels of the Earth and causes volcanic eruptions from its tantrums. To appease it's rage, the Chileans sacrificed young virgin girls by throwing them into the heart of the volcano, where the beast was beleived to live. Although this whole story seems extremely unlikely, I can't help but ponder the possible romance behind this myth. What do you guys think? thumbsup.gif

Wow those things are weird.

Well, if I had a supply of virgins, I certainly wouldn't be chucking them into the lava pits for some mythical boogeyman to ingest.

There are, you see, mch better uses for them.

What possible romance is there in a primitive peoples throwing terrified young women into lava? I guess I missed the point.

QUOTE
Legend has it that once the Cherufe was finished consuming the more delicate portions of its victims, it would delight in a macabre game in which it would ignite the disembodied heads of the young girls who were sacrificed to it, and hurtle them from the mouth of its volcanic home.

So giving Cherufe young virgins actually provoked a volcanic eruption?
If people really believe in Cherufe, then technically, they are causing the eruptions that they're trying to prevent which really wouldn't make sense, unless i'm taking this too literally - which I have a tendency to do! huh.gif

I think that it would be really suck if I was chucked in to a volcanoe. And much more to have my disembodied head used as a soccer ball.

ask urself: does the alleged creature resemble anything in the fossil record? does it make sense for it to exist with in its enviornment?

Ask Yourself: Does a giant monster living in the inhospital regions of magma, poisonous gas, and sulfer-filled areas and causing volcanoes to explode and earth quakes to arise when it throws tantrums, except when happily snacking on versions, sound plausible?

You really don't have to think that hard lol laugh.gif

I cant help but to think how incredibly difficult if not impossible it must be to throw someone into a volcano and not get killed yourself. I mean c'mon now.

Step 1. Pick up Extremely Large and Dngerous-looking stick. happy.gif

Step 2. Stand well away from dangerous heat.

Step 3. Smirk Excessively while prodding Extremely Large and Dangerous-looking Stick into virgin's back.

Step 4. Watch virgin perform impressive high-dive off of the edge in to the volcanoe.

Step 5. Cheer.

That's a nice story.

Waste of a virgin, but a nice story.
makaya325
the eruptions are geological, not biological. remember back in those days, people viewed earthquakes as coming from large beasts

Then you read this at the site

QUOTE
While it is easy to trace the mythological origins of this beast to a prehistoric need to explain anomalous geological events such as volcanic eruptions, there has been some consideration given by cryptozoological investigators to the possibility that - much like the strange animals who thrive in the tremendous heat found in the mineral rich exhaust of hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor - the legends of the Cherufe maybe be based, albeit loosely, on sightings of an actual biological entity. An entity which is capable not only of surviving, but flourishing, in the incredible heat of molten rock.

Hopeful or what! What cryptozoolgical investigator is that stupid?

Thanks for bringing it to our attention thumbsup.gif

It is a very clear cut example of getting carried away with legendary sources. Amazing that some get so very carried away with such ideals isn't it?

I think there is much cultural value in such tales, and they tell us volumes about the evolution of societies. I cannot fathom how people get stuck in such superstitions though, even to a point where they start trying to make up things to investigate. One would think with the advent of modern communications and the ever increasing vault ofknowledge that becomes more readily available daily that one would be able to see such tales exactly for what such tales are.

I am sure we will get there one day!
