The British govt. asked the people what they thopught of GM crops....but we obviously gave the wrong answer!

They have changed tactics. We have said we won't eat GM so now they are trying to convince us to grow GM plants in our own back gardens: you can have Geraniums that can withstand frost (presumably they mean annual peligoniums...but THAT'S an other rant! wink2.gif ), lawn grass that hardly needs mowing, and roses that bloom in the depths of Winter.

& I thought the WHOLE basis for justifying GM was to ease world famine...bit like the "Sadam can reach us with WMD in 45 mins" justification for the war....

How are these alike?

that we owe it to ourselves to do all the research that can be done before letting innocent people ingest genetically modified food products.

Yes we should, but then the organisations that are opposed wont allow it, they would rather destroy the crops and condem GM crops before the scientists have the time to study any affects.

They are alike in that the govt said they were the MAIN reason: but when they were proved to be insubstantial, the govt. just came up with an other MAIN reason and claimed the first was "just one of many"
<bleeding_heart>
So what is the main reason the government are supporting the use of GM crops now?
HumberWitch
Not sure, but I suspect money comes into it somewhere cos common sense doesn't!

The reason I ask is as I see it the real reason for going to war was to secure oil supplies, although I think Saddam did need removing for others reason. The reason, again as I see it, is for GM crops to feed the hungry, if we say we dont want to eat it the government should respect that, but when there is no much bad press and scaremongering from certain organisation who just dont care whether scientists have completed their research and just want it stopped completly, it's understandable that the goverment will use PR stunts like offering frost resistant plants to allow GM to at least be researched fully.

Personnally I am not against genetic manipulation . I am however very much against letting it into the food chain .

The British government has a bit of history with letting dangerous things into the food chain .
I'll be back later to post a link to a gentleman , who claims the British government sold stockpiled nerve gas as cattle drench . And we wonder where BSE came from ... huh.gif

Its ok to do what we want we foods,as long as it is not to cause harm no people.
by that i mean any posionous ingredience.
We as Humans have the right to do what ever we want with foods,as long as its foods wich we grow in the ground.
also that means any animal we use for consumption, must be not touched.
Basically ,i only agree if its fruit or veg.
Be Good Produces,Not Good Gatheres.

I find GM to be absolutely disgusting. Unfortunately it seems more difficult to get real food vs. GM food where I live. It's soooo grooossss! scared.gif

Scientific studies into Genetics is a fantastic thing . There are plenty of people who benefit from break throughs in genetic sciences . However fiddiling with somethings inner code and the digesting un-aware of what might happen to you is another thing entirely .
My main concern is on a personal level . Most of you know that my son has what is termed a genetic condition .Neurofibromatosis ,he is pretty much your average happy little boy at the moment , however there are dozens of things that he could develop and others who suffer from Neurofibromatosis have to contend with on a daily basis .
Fibromas are tumors (mostly benign ) that develop on nerve endings . So yes cancer, luekemia , fibromas on the spine ., deformaties of the bone structure ect,ect...
It is the most comon genetic disorder in the world and yet there is very little can be done to treat the condition or even most of it's symptoms .. So I say bring on genetic testing and long may there be more of it for that reason alone ..

However my son has a spontaneus mutation . Which means that allthough most people develop NF by inheriting it from a parent . My son developed it all on his own ..
So I constantly ask myself ,Was it what I ate, when I was pregnant ? Should I have left the Milo alone , was it in the sweetcorn ? GM should not be in the food chain , People should not be treated as guinny pigs ... and another thing if I can spell Neurofibromatosis without missing a beat why can't I spell Guinny pig properly ?

Its about science vs superstition. People are quite happy to go about their lives using the advances that science has made in the past 50 years, living until they're 90 years old. We have extremely low infant mortality, a high standard of living, and more food then we could possibly ever eat. We have wonderful drugs that can cure a wide range of previously deadly diseases, treatments to prolong the life of people with cancer, AIDS, and any range of sicknesses.

But, dare to mention GM to most people, and the 'frankenstein foods' attitude promoted by the Daily Mail readers comes to the fore. Most of this is based upon ignorance. People often cite the dangers to the environment, but casually ignore the damage caused by agriculture even at its most basic level, without the use of fertilisers. 'What about the insects' they scream, while casually forgetting the displacement of other species due to their natural habitat being cleared for agricultural use.

There are areas of this planet where GM crops would be massively beneficial, Africa is one example. How are the Africans supposed to compete with a Europe that bans GM crops, because of the ignorance of their populace?

I say trust the scientists, just as you trust the doctor who operates to save your life. Neither would do it if they weren't paid money.
Kismit
I don't trust all Doctors niether do I trust all Scientists . I'm not into blind faith , perhaps the best reason to date as to why I can't seem to settle into any one religion .
We have only just last year managed to Map the human Geonome , Science isn't exactly an old hand at genetic manipulation and it's effects particulary those effects caused by ingestion of manipulted foods .

NF has more symptoms than you can poke a stick at and all you need to get it is to be missing the last little notch on strand 17 of your DNA . Tiny little almost nothing change and a merriad of things can go wrong . Don't feed me GM food . I'm not ready to trust in that yet either .

P.S. I am more than happy to live in a world of penicilin and pain killers , preferably organically based penicillins and pain killers . thumbsup.gif
