We've done this before, haven't we? I seem to remember a conversation about manatees.

Mermaids do not exist, never did, and if ever they do, it would take several million years and untold turns of evolution. They were the product of wild imaginations when Christopher Columbus claimed, upon seeing a manatee, that they weren't as pretty as people made them out to be, if I may paraphrase. Before this, they were simply part of legend, stemming as far back as the Greek Sirens.

The Greek sirens had wings and were more bird-women...so even the word siren implies different type of creatures...but to my knowledge there is very little possibility of their existence...

If mermaids existed I wouldn't have any problems with life.

Why, do you live by the sea? Would you want to be, "Part of that world" (Think Little Mermaid song) grin2.gif

I believe the story of the mermaid originated from large animals seen in the ocean by delusional sea men. It was not unusual for people at sea in the days of sailing ships to go crazy or die from mal-nutrition.

It is also likely the idea of the modern mermaid came from the idea of water nymphs or naiads, and these water fairies go all the way back to Ancient Greek Myth, involving the offspring of gods and titans such as Oceanus and Triton.

No doubt several things contributed to the legend.

Dugongs actually nurse the young in a similar position to human females, I think that would have a lot to do with with the sea tales.

Walking around on those... what do you call'ems?
Oh. Feet.

My question is - who takes the time to write these things?

Mermaids were made up by sailors to fill their sexual fantasies. You can get really lonly on a ship, what else is there to do wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif thumbup.gif

I think the mermaid/sirens were also used as a scapegoat for inept sailing.

"Well, the ship just sort of sailed into that huge rocky cliff..."

"How could that have happened?"

"Ehm, well, hot women from the sea lured them there.."

"Of course. It all makes sense now.."

Indeed.
