Does anyone have information on who started the gatorman hoax, and why do many cryptozoology websites list them as actual crypids?

The Evidence
There is currently no physical evidence that would support the existence of a creature like the Gatormen.

The Sightings
No documented sightings of Gatormen could be found at this time.

ROFL.

That is indeed a puzzling bit of information.

No idea! Hilarious, though, claiming something's been around since the 1700s with absolutely nothing to go on!

Why call Mr.Gatorman stupid and be angry at him? dontgetit.gif
It seems it just started as a legend, and well, some investigators or crypto enthusiast have to consider him. After all, there are some animals that were always considered a legend, but turned out to be true (not saying that Gatorman exists, we all know they are just the Reptilians cousins yes.gif ).

Which, of course, doesn't make this particular one any less stupid.

There are no known sightings of the gatorman and the photo couln't have been taken hundreds of years ago when people started making legends. Also, nobody in florida has ever even heard of the gatormen.

I didn't know that picture was suppoused to be from the 1700's rofl.gif ; anways, it looks like this cryptid could've been based off the centaur, or mermaid. I remember a picture similar to the "gatorman" where they had a fake mermaid from some circus; I'm guessing this is the same "idea".

Jebus that mermaid is not pretty! no.gif tongue.gif
Yeah, if this these 'gatormen' have been around since the 1700s, I find it hard to believe that one wouldn't of been caught, especially as they are supposedly running around in the Everglades. The pictures are so obviously just a rip off of the fiji mermaid, there are practically no differences!

This is very true. You would of thought that there would at least be some urban legends, if not only to frighten little kids into staying close to their parents, yes?

Why would many websites list gatormen even a mythical creatures if nobody has even heard of them? How could the myth have been passed on?

I think that someone has come up with this hoax, and then gone on wikipedia or something similar, written about it, and you'd be wholly surprised by the number of people who read things on wikipedia and think 'right, that must be true then, it said so on wikipedia', when in actual fact anyone can write anything they want on there. Or someones written in to one of these websites that aren't that bothered about the truth, and things just spread from there. Its silly, like there isn't enough cryptids for people to be searching for, without some blantantly made up rip off of something else. yes.gif

There's the "Jake" the gatorman corpse on display at the Longbeach Museum. Google it.

The only gatormen stories I have ever seen come from The Weekly World News, which I think, unfortunately, some people believe is legit.
