Well I am glad I discovered this thread before it disappeared, as I am a member of the Association For Research and Enlightenment, the orginization he founded, and have been to their headquarters in Virginia Beach a couple times. As is to be expected, there are a number of skeptics and detractors so I will do my best to take on what I can of it from my own knowledge of the man and his life.
So first off: "Once he tried to use his psychic powers to locate oil in Texas. He clearly failed." This is only part of the story. Many of his readings prior to this essentially indicated he would not be successful in these type of endeavours. When he went ahead and did it anyway, urged on by some get rich quick type schemers, a reading point blank indicated that he would not be able to use his gifts for material gain. THAT is why it failed. Whenever he attempted to use them for his own gain, they failed.
"Through Lammers influence, Cayce became convinced of reincarnation, astrology, Atlantis, Lemuria ( the pacific version of Atlantis), as well as other Theosophic beliefs. Cayce departed from orthodox Christianity, quit his job as a photographer, and began doing "life readings" for people on a full time basis."
True to a point, but it was the readings themselves that convinced Cayce of these things, and one will note that these discoveries shocked him. It wasn't until they kept coming up, again and again that he began to believe it. In fact, some of his first readings that revealed reincarnation were on the medical readings, NOT the life readings. Read There is a River.
* predicted that Atlantis would rise from the ocean in the twentieth century
-portions of land, not Atlantis itself, so this cannot be confirmed or denied.
* New York would fall into the ocean in the 1970's
* California would slide into the Pacific at the same time
"Watch New York, Connecticut and the like. Many portions of the east coast will be disturbed, as well as many portions of the west coast, as well as the central portion of the United States. Los Angeles, San Francisco, most of all these will be among those that will be destroyed before New York, or New York City itself, will in the main disappear. This will be another generation though, here; while the southern portions of Carolina, Georgia, these will disappear. This will be much sooner. The waters of the Great Lakes will empty into the Gulf of Mexico."
.....I don't see a date in here, do you? I think it was more the WRITERS of those books in the 70s, such as the Sleeping Prophet, than the readings themselves. Actually the readings state that much of these disasters would actually be the result of the pole shift, which would begin taking place in the 90s. His readings also clearly state that these changes will be GRADUAL. Draw your own conclusions.
http://www.theastralworld.com/prophecies/e...predictions.phpAnd let's not forget some of the ones that DID come true!!
http://www.near-death.com/experiences/cayce11.html* Hitler would not pose a threat to the nations of Europe
Huh? Then what about this actual reading:
"Thus an unseen force, gradually growing, must result in an almost direct opposition to the Nazi, or Aryan theme. This will gradually produce a growth of animosities. And unless there is interference by what many call supernatural forces and influences -- which are active in the affairs of nations and peoples -- the whole world as it were... will be set on fire by militaristic groups and people who are for power expansion."
* Cigarette smoking was not harmful to one's health
lol not to much of a stretch here, probably wishful thinking, more, as he himself was a smoker.
* Almonds will cure cancer, as well as untold number of bogus health tips.
No almonds? Are you sure?
Red Wine, Coffee, and Almonds May Lower Prostate Cancer Risk
WebMD Health NewsReviewed by Gary D. Vogin, MDApril 5, 2001 -- Red wine, almonds, coffee, and certain fruits and nuts rich in a nutrient called boron may help stave off prostate cancer, preliminary research suggests.
While researchers are not sure exactly how boron lowers risk for prostate cancer, the new study shows that men who consumed the greatest amount of boron were 64% less likely to develop prostate cancer, when compared with men who consumed the least amount of boron in the study. The findings were presented this week at the Experimental Biology conference in Orlando, Fla.
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be about 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer in this country in the year 2000, and about 31,900 men will die of this disease. Boron is a naturally occurring trace element that is believed to play a role in certain cellular processes involved in cancer protection.
"This is the very first study relating dietary boron intake and cancer risk," says lead researcher Zuo-Fen Zhang, MD, PhD, director of the Cancer Epidemiology Training Program at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Public Health.
While cautioning that the findings are preliminary, he tells WebMD that "there was a big reduction of prostate cancer in people who consumed the greatest amount of boron."
And those men in the study who ate the second-highest and third-highest amount of boron also had a lower risk than men in the study who consumed the least amount of boron, he says.
To arrive at their findings, the researchers compared dietary patterns of 76 men with prostate cancer to that of 7,651 males without cancer. Men in the lowest quartile of boron consumption ate roughly one slice of fruit per day, while those in the highest quartile consumed 3.5 servings of fruit per day.
"We see this association is very specific to prostate cancer," he says. "We did not observe any association for boron and colon/rectal, breast, uterine, cervical or skin cancer," Zhang says. The researchers used data from the large-scale, ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination study to draw these conclusions.
The next step, he says, is to repeat the findings in a larger study to see if the results hold.
So what should you do in the meantime?
"Eat a balanced diet that especially includes fruits and nuts," says another study researcher Charlene Rainey, the president of Food Research Inc. of Costa Mesa, Calif. And remember that boron is anything but boring, she says. There's something for everyone when it comes to boron-rich foods.
"Almonds, peanuts, peanut butter, grapes, raisins, grape juice, dried fruits, dried nuts, and legumes are rich in boron," she says. "Red wine is also a very good source of boron," she says. Some of the compounds found in red wine also have been shown to lower risk for heart disease when it is consumed in moderation.
............not to mention that it helps with cholestrol and lowering the blood pressure. So almonds have many health benefits.
"He published many books and held countless 'readings' and personally benefited from the financial gain these activities collected."
....Simply not true. He published no real books of his own, other than My Life as a Seer, his Memoirs, and as far as financial gain, I'm not sure what sources you are reading, as anyone who has even read one of his biographies will see that he was dirt poor his whole life. Also, you imply that he charged for his readings, which is also utterly false. There was a brief time, when, urged on by some of his supporters that he did charge a meager fee, but he quickly stopped doing that, as he felt it was wrong to take money from those who wanted his help. He never again charged a single cent for any of them.
"Last night I found a message board about archaeology, and they were hotly debating about the secrets hidden in 'the right paw of the Sphinx'and about how Cayce had said alot about it."
.......Yes, he predicted that when man was spiritually ready, we would discover a Hall Of Records underneath the sphinx, as well as I think, two more in existence, that contained the origins of man, and the Atlantean civilization. They have dug there a little bit, and nothing has been found as of yet, but this does not mean its impossible, or that it doesn't exist. Who knows.
"Just happened to come across further information on Edgar Cayce and the 'reality' of his healing and psychic abilities."
Yeah, and I've read through that site. Are you to say then, that everything the man did should be discounted? Furthermore, what about other sources, such as Dr. Harold J. Reilly who treated a number of patients that Cayce specifically sent to him (having never met the man), and he followed his treatments to amazing success? Reilly, who had never even met Cayce, an unbiased doctor, was convinced of his legitimacy. Not to mention the testimonies that can even be viewed at the ARE headquarters. For every falsity on may or may not justly claim, there is plenty of evidence out there for his success as well.
Go to edgarcayce.org the offical ARE website. This man should not be dismissed but for a few skeptics out there.
