You can read more about the history and legends of Willard Library by going to its web site:
http://www.willard.lib.in.us/This red brick Gothic structure, built over 100 years ago is spectacular! The 1999 photo on the web site, while attractive, does not do it justice. Inside, directly in front of the main entrance, is a gorgeous dark hardwood staircase, each landing decorated beautifully with things like a bench and an enormous portrait of George Washington. The first floor houses the main reading room and an awesome collection of art books. On the second floor, you'll find an area dedicated to the study of geneaology and local history plus computers for surfing the net (where I spent quite a bit of time while a poor college student). And finally, in the basement there is the quaint children's room - filled with wonderful kids books ranging from classics to Dr. Suess.
I wish I had some great stories to share about the library, but the encounters with the Lady in Grey that I am aware of are not that dramatic. No one I have met has actually seen the apparition, but many have experienced strange sensations especially near the restrooms and children's room. These occurences are usually a very cold spot in the air or the scent of a woman's perfume (one person described it as "lilacs").
Paranormal investigators (such as the Indiana Ghost Trackers) have checked out the library with their equipment and found readings consistent with a haunting. There was even a piece about Willard Library on the Discovery Channel's "Real Ghost Hunters" - a big deal for our little city. You can get the video here:

Oh yeah, one more thing. Another haunted building in Evansville, not too far from Willard, is the office of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. My mother-in-law works there and has actually
seen that ghost - a tall man in a suit leaning against a counter in the kitchen!!! Others have heard loud banging from upstairs and experienced slamming doors and flying papers. The local paranormal investigators recently found readings indicative of a haunting there too!
