Mastermind behind failed killing spree gets 10 years
CAMDEN -- The teenage ringleader in an aborted killing spree was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison after telling a judge last summer's plot was "more fantasy than anything."
Authorities said Matthew Lovett, now 19, hatched the plan to hijack a car, shoot three other teens in his hometown and then kill at random.
Lovett, Cody Jackson and Christopher Olson gathered guns, swords and thousands of bullets and set off July 6, but the spree never happened. At Thursday's sentencing, Lovett said they changed their minds when they approached a passing motorist and he sped off.
The motorist who fled called police, saying one of three young men had pulled a gun on him, and the teens were taken into custody.
