Tests of the Aventis Pasteur drug, called IMOVAX, turned up traces of a live strain of rabies.
The tested lot was never distributed for public use. But the company is recalling four other batches in the United States because they were made during the same time period as those distributed since September 2003. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said those batches passed quality tests.
The CDC said it's unlikely anyone who got rabies shots has been exposed to the virus. But it said that possibility, however small, does exist.
As a result, authorities recommend that people who have had the recalled shots get additional ones.
A vaccine expert said the company didn't have to recall the drug, saying it's using an "excess of caution."
