Has it really been around for that long? Yes, it has.
I joined the hobby not long after it reached Britain, back in the early eighties, but it was already going strong in the US, it's birthplace. It faded from mainstream popularity, when PCs and consoles showed up, but loyal devotees kept it alive, and now with it's new owners, Wizards of the Coast, it is back, and going strong once more.

i still play d&d. it's not my favorite rpg, but i still play it now and then. everytime i play, one of the players has to do something completely degrading and/or disguting, usually many many times, because the only guy we can get as a DM sometimes goes on powertrips. in other words, standard gaming stuff. we get him back though by not doing what he planned for us to do and by generally being nuisances. he gets very irritated at us...tee hee!

That's true. If you're introduced to the game by a good Dungeonmaster, or a good group of friends, you'll be hooked for life. But a bad DM could put you off completely.

What you think there would be a D&D discussion without Syko joining in? I played Basic All the way to 3e and I still think 2e was actually My favorite. I still play at least once a week but that slowed down when we decided to do a Ghostwalk game so set up has taken awhile.
Oh well But next to Thistle and UM D&D is one of my major obsessions....

I started playing the basic game, after spotting it, and lots of fantasy miniatures in a newly opened shop called Games Workshop. I wonder what happened to them, by the way. Oh, that's right, they went on to take over the planet.

I got a few friends hooked on the game, and within a year or so, one of those friends went out and bought the Advanced D&D books.

*has come over all nostalgic*

I'm a little sad that I got rid of a lot of my old stuff, although I have a stack of
White Dwarfs from the classic gaming era, in wonderful condition. I still have the advanced books, but most of the stuff I held onto was other systems, like CoC and Traveller.

well I almost have all the 1e rule books (still need a couple and then theres the holy grial Dieties and demigods) a good chunk of the 2e material and save 2 all the book 3e did before the 3.5 screwjob. (I use 1e and 2e stuff still in my 3e game) I understand what you mean by loosing your collection I sold mine years ago and have been rebuilding it in the past two years.

Just a heads up Wizards Of The Coast ( I'll refrain from using what I call them normally) Is releasing a Leather bound copy of the 3.$ errr 3.5 players handbook, A book about the last 3o years and and Official Dice set with the 30 year logo on it.
Good stuff for collectors (unless it's all about patting the company that holds D&D hostage collective snaky backs) and some I amy be interested in. I'll tryto find some links and Pics to the press releases as time allows.
Also I'll try not to turn into Plunderer_of_the_Planes(those who may go to WOTC's forum Know who I speak of) while talking about Weasels of The coast

Dungeons and Dragons is a great role playing game. Who cares what company owns it and what suppliments they put out with the DND name on it. Quite whining and play the game. Heesh!
I have played DND alot and I have gotta say, the role playing game Rifts is so much more fun. DnD is a good game for people to start out RPing but Rifts is just by far the funnest RPG i have ever played.

aw wicked, another rifts player. such a sweet game, eh? only problem with it is how powerful a munchkin can get, oftentimes ruinging the game for everybody else.
but back to my intended purpose. i found this goofy little rap:
"my pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard
and they're like, 'do you wanna trade cards?'
damn right, i wanna trade cards
i will trade you, but not my charizard."

I worked for a game company called Interplay when they were making several D&D based CRPG's. I was the QA Manager for Baldurs Gate, and worked on BG2 as well. I had to deal with some of the WOTC guys trying to figure out rules applications.
I really enjoy playing rpg's but to be brutally honest some of the pen and paper guys fanatics really scared me...I get into games quite a bit, but some of these D&D folks just
lived for D&D. They talked about it nonstop, and from the excited way that they would talk about some of the games they played, you would think that they had just really risked their lives fighting a creature of some sort...
I've talked to guys after getting out of actual real life firefights in Iraq that weren't so excited.

Nope sorry Wotc is in the process of ruining D&D. Yes At first I thought 3e would be good and it still is pretty sound but their management sucks.
First there was the whole Living Greyhawk nonsense. They promisied Greyhawk but gave us theis thing that barely resembles Gygax's vision for the setting plus using it as the RPGA's toy was a bad Idea. They then pimped out Ravenloft to a substandard development company making the setting go from a well constructed world to the biggest load of bulldunk I ever saw.
Then Planescape...well look at the thousands upon thousands of people screaming for it's return. But it WOTC fashion the fans are ignored so they can pursue Eberron *barfs*. Not to mention letting it be produced by a bunch of no talent hack fans who have made a mockery of the beuty it was. Yeah it can be got for free until wotc sees it's popular then they sell it at astronomical prices.
Dragonlance anyone? Well good luck. Wotc produced the book to get the kings share of the profit even though Not one WOTC employee worked on it!!
Thats right it was all Margret Weis's people and they got squat for it.
Then the ultimate screwjob being 3.5 no 3e was not good enough after 3 years. and suddenly the edition that they claimed was fully playtested was now only tested to 10th level and needed major revising wich, I may add, screwed 3e up big time.
Now you have to pay again to stay current (and yes WOTC makes it sound like you are a horrible person if you don't).
I wish I had the space to put all the lies dirty deals, and other stuff that wotc has done to D&D up hear but bits have been leaking since Monte Cook and Sean K. Renyolds went their own way. ( yes two of the best designers spilled the beans that 3.$ was just a money grab nothing more)
I'll just say this much under the current stupidity of WOTC and their cabin boy Andy Collins D&D is in big trouble.....
