LONDON (Reuters) - The dangers of obesity to kids may be all over the headlines just now but spare a thought for the legions of fat rabbits -- overfed and under-exercised by their doting British owners.

To tackle the problem, Edinburgh University's Veterinary School is to employ a vet to become a rabbit specialist and examine the extent of the issue.

"It is a big problem. Rabbits are being killed with kindness. They are designed to eat grass but are being fed things like pizza, crisps and digestive biscuits," said Anna Meredith, head of the university's exotic animals service.

"There are about 1.3 million pet rabbits across the UK and, judging by what I see in my surgery, tens of thousands of them must be badly overweight," she told Reuters.

The problem lay, she said, not with children who have traditionally kept rabbits as cuddly pets, but more with adults.

"We have to get back to nature in terms of diet. Rabbits are very sociable animals who bond very easily with their owners. But unfortunately they also have a very sweet tooth and love sugary things," Meredith added.

Okay, I think it is about time them guys in the USA and elsewhere learn to eat rabbits. They are delicious and nutricious !!
In my country, rabbits are kept as food. They are seldom pets.

ya know, i've always wanted to try rabbit. they don't sell it at grocery stores here though, so i'd have to go to a pet store, and i haven't the heart to kill one.
