Chris Jericho’s done a lot great things in his illustrious career. He’s unified the WWE and WCW World Championships, defeating both The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin on the same night, hosted his own talk segment, “The Highlight Reel” on Monday Night RAW, and toured internationally with his rock band Fozzy. Last Sunday, Y2J did something else extraordinary. He debuted his new weekly radio show, “The Rock of Jericho.”
“Back in June, I guest hosted a show called “The Metal Sludge Radio Show,” for a friend of mine who works on the show,” recalled Y2J, “and it worked out so well, that the head of the XM Radio’s Rock department, asked me if I’d want to do a show of my own. And I thought it would be a great idea, so as you can see, it took a long time to work out, but despite the long process, it was very exciting for me, because I love music, I know my stuff, and I love talking about it.”
What Jericho loves most about his show, is that he can say whatever he wants, and play whatever he wants –XM Radio disc jockeys have no playlists. And Jericho, who’s loved metal since the age of 12, has been in a rock band since the age of 14, feel as though he knows everything there is to know about metal music.
“I appreciate it, and I have a passion for it,” said Jericho, “plus, I have a million great stories from my years here in WWE, wrestling in general, as well as with Fozzy, because we’ve played with, and met a lot of these guys, which has given me some great stories to tell in between songs. Therefore, I definitely think I have my stripes when it comes to music.”
This past Sunday night, “The Rock of Jericho” made its XM debut on channel 41, da Boneyard. Being that Jericho had previously recorded the show, and was on the road, working WWE Live Events, he made sure to rent a car with XM Radio in it, so that he’d be able to hear it.
“I thought my first show was great,” exclaimed Jericho. “I think I may have had a few too many ‘ums’ and ‘ahs,’ but for a first attempt, I thought it was really good. There’s definitely room for improvement, but like I said, it was a first time, so hopefully by the fifth or sixth time, I’ll really be grooving.”
While Jericho picks his own tunes (generally 10 songs per broadcast) and does intro before each one, it’s a challenge for him to find time to make it into the studio. Therefore, he carries what is called a DAT Machine - a high-tech tape recorder - as well as a microphone. These devices allow Y2J to record his show wherever he may be, whether at his hotel room, or even backstage at RAW.
“I’ll do the talking to introduce each song,” revealed Y2J, “and then I’ll pause, because the songs are added in later. I’m actually going to put each show’s tunes into a playlist on my iPod, so I can listen to them as I go, and do the intros. This should help me get into the music, get more animated, and find my groove.”
At this time, Jericho has no plans on doing a daily broadcast, which would mean a full-time jump from WWE into the world of radio. Right now, he is just having a blast, and doing something that comes natural to him – listening to, and talking about rock music. Although one day, when his wrestling career is finished, Y2J does think that radio may be a possible post-sports-entertainment profession
“It’s so fun, that the hour goes by really fast,” said Jericho. “It’s definitely something I will want to keep doing in the future, because I love music, I love picking my own songs, and I love having no restrictions. I think that in the next few years, everyone will have an XM Radio in their car – it will be like a tape player. XM’s only going to get bigger and bigger, and as long as people want to hear my tunes, I can see myself doing a radio show for the rest of my life, because I know my stuff, and there are so many cool things I’ll be able to do in the future.”
