I've just had a thought about this, is the 2nd PC the one without the internet connection, that's connecting through the proxy ?

If so, then in the same way as you put the IP settings etc. for the other PC into your browser, you need to do the same in mIRC.

Go into your mIRC settings and look for a 'firewall' section, put the IP address of the other PC in 'hostname' and the port ( try 6588 ), you may need to set a port on the other PC so that IRC can connect through it. Try that first though and see if it works. Remember to tick 'server' and 'proxy' aswell.

YES @ THE 2ND PC BEING WITHOUT INTERNET, AND IS CONNECTING THru the 1st pc (scuse caps lock, sorry)

Ok if this works for Mirc, what about things like MSN and other chat servers that dont use Mirc?

I'm at work so will give this a go tonight. My fiance d/l'ed the microsoft VM, as we thought that would solve the problem, but obviously didn't!

Thanks again for ur help

Here's something you can try, but make sure you have the default Windows XP firewall enabled before doing it.

Temporarily disable you're main firewall on the computer with the internet connection, then try and connect to mIRC etc and see if it makes any difference. If it does, then your firewall is whats causing the problems, otherwise at least you can eliminate that possibility.

You may need to create a 'rule' on your firewall to allow the other PC through.

There's also the possibility that the proxy server that your using simply does not support the protocols used in these applications, IRC for example. In that case, it would be necessary to find another proxy server with better features in order to allow the 2nd PC to use those particular applications.

ok i just got banned from a MIRC server and got this message:-

Open proxy lookup
You have been directed to this page because an open proxy was at some point suspected to be running on the IP address you are using.

Open proxies allow anonymous use of your IP address and are increasingly being used as a method for sending unsolicitied emails. More information..

The IP address ****** has never been in our blacklist nor has it been submitted for scanning.

Email?
If you are reading this page as a result of your email being bounced, this suggests a mistake or misconfiguration at the receiving site - ****** has never been present in our blacklist. You should contact the site you are trying to send email to by other means, as we cannot help you further.

IRC?
If you have just received this message after being banned from an IRC network it may take a few moments for your IP address to be submitted. Please refresh this page in a few minutes. It is also possible the IRC network is making use of our BOPM software but not contributing proxies to our OPM blacklist, in which case we cannot help you, you must talk to the administrators of the IRC network you were trying to connect to.

And on the "more information page" :-

Proxy FAQs
What is a proxy?
A proxy is a piece of software that allows other computers to "bounce" connections through the computer it is installed on allowing other computers to access the internet through it. This can allow access to the internet from networks which do not have a direct internet connection.

So why aren't they allowed?
We have no problem with correctly configured proxies, they are sometimes the only way it is possible for someone to gain internet access. However when a proxy is misconfigured to allow access to anyone on the internet (often called an open proxy) it can be used by anyone on the internet to "bounce" their connections through your system! This type of misconfigured proxy is an annoyance to the internet community as a whole because they allow abusers to hide behind someone else's address. This can be abused by spammers to anonymously send unsolicitied email ("spam"), to anonymously connect to a chat network such as IRC or to access (and possibily abuse) websites in an anonymous fashion.

How does this affect IRC?
If you have been on IRC for any length of time, you have probably seen an attack using open proxies at least once. Hundreds of clients will enter a channel, often with random nick names, and start sending large amounts of coloured channel and CTCP messages. Commonly they will leave and join the channel rapidly in order to cause more disruption.

Without completely locking up the channel, there is no effective way to stop the flood. Even if the channel is locked up, the floods of text can be sent to individual users and will usually be enough to disconnect them.

Most of these types of attacks use open proxies because open proxies are relatively easy to come by. Lists of them are readily available over the Internet. So this is why many IRC networks do not allow them. If you have to use a proxy, it should be configured correctly.

Any ideas??

I had problem with the when i installed the firewall but i then remove it after that everything work again.
Anyway
With your IRC problem you could try contact the admin of that server to see if your banned etc.

Snow, have you got the default Windows XP firewall enabled ? If not, try enabling it and see if that fixes the problem.
