Saw Battle Royale tonight...very interesting film....

For those who are unaware, the film is based on an infamous Japanese novel, in which Japan runs an organisation that takes a randomly selected classroom of ordinary students to a remote island, arms them, and then sends them out to kill each other to leave only one survivor.

Think Big Brother, only with forty or so contestants, and instead of getting voted off, you're shot, stabbed, blown up, mutilated, beaten to death, and all manner of rather twisted ways of being killed blink.gif

Very violent, gory, and depressing film (and book) indeed...but certainly a masterpeice in its own right. It's one of those films (as indeed the book was), that's designed to make you think about human nature: the idea was to demonstrate what a human could become under a certain set of circumstances (in this case "kill or be killed").

I'm just curious to know if anyone else has seen the film, or read the book (there's also a manga adaptation available), and what people thought of it. Certainly a horribly depressing thing to talk about though tongue.gif

i saw that movie! on a website i go to, they had a list of the "best horror movies you've never seen." so, i copied the list and have been seeing them all as best i can. battle royale was one of them, and i got my friend to download it. he burned it to disc and i watched it.

such a wicked movie. it was pretty strange, but it was quite enjoyable.

I don't really call it a horror movie...to be honest, I'm not sure WHAT you'd call it huh.gif sort of an...action/drama/thriller. In any event, I don't think the director's intention was to make you think it was "wicked" tongue.gif

It is interesting to think though, that the scenario was entirerly plausable...it's the sort of thing that could very easily occur in some countries, and people wouldn't know any better huh.gif I think that's one of the elements of it that was the most disturbing (aside from seeing several dozen teenagers systematically slaughtering each other like pigs dontgetit.gif)

i don't really know what to call it either. horror kind of covers it best though, as far as i can figure.

and bah to you. the director and me, we go way back. he said, "chico, i'm gonna make a movie just for you. you'll love it." and i was like, "why thank you mr. japanese director who's name i don't know, thank you." heh, i found it entertaining is all. definitely worth seeing.

i didn't find the movie or the idea that disturbing. didn't have any of the things that really bother me. when i saw it, i distinctly remember thinking that, given the circumstances, it could be pulled off. with the overpopulation and whatnot today, ya never know. they might start televising that kind of thing. humans have always had a very high interest in the blood sports.

I saw it a while ago... Like a Japanese version of 'Lord of the Flies'. Interesting. I heard the sequel sucks though.

Excellent movie.

If you like that one, try 'Series 7: The Contenders' - Hilarious (but very dark).

"series 7" was quite good. it was strange and makes ya think about what people seem to be demanding with entertainment as time goes on.

Ah, but wouldn't that then lead to a gradual creation of an elite band up super-neds, who had survived the ordeal, and would be an even more violent group of morons, eager to beat up and kill anyone they didn't recognise who happened to be walking through their "territory"? dontgetit.gif
