In moving to extend its reach into the lucrative mobile-gaming arena with the introduction of the PlayStation Portable, Sony is emphasizing what makes its hand-held the un-Game Boy.
Unlike Nintendo's Game Boy line, which has dominated the market for hand-held gaming consoles since its debut in 1989, the PSP was not designed to be simply a game machine. In addition to playing high-resolution 3-D games on its 4.3-inch liquid-crystal-display screen, the PSP will play full-motion movies and digital music.
"PlayStation Portable is as revolutionary as PlayStation, but in different ways," said Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, who presented PSP here on the eve of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the annual video-game trade show, which opened today. "It is very different than what is currently on the market," he added, characterizing the PSP as "entertainment to go."
