Well here it is. My D&D thread. I want anyone who plays had played or is interested in playing to please post here.
I have to say that this was not my idea alone. Buggy and I have discussed the possibility of trying to get the D&D players here together so here is the attempt.
I would like this thread to cover as much as we can be it Basic, advanced 1e-3e, or OD&D.
Well just so we all know my background in the game I have been playing for 14 years I started in 1e advanced and have played 1e-3e and even basic. I am familiar with most of the games history, worlds and rules books. I currently am Dming a Forgotten realms game that has went along nicely.
So I'll turn it over to you guys now and have fun.

*giggles like mad now* Thanks Otter.
Hm... Let's see... My first game was my freshman year of high school.. oh hell was it really 10 years ago? *Looks at the calender again.* Yep. Ten years ago.
I've played first edition (A Elf named Puma) 2nd ed (Two knights, a few theives, and a pirate)
I've LARPed a little. I had a werewolf that lasted about 20 minutes in a game... My best friend was the one to take me out of it. Damned Vampires...
I've also been in a few other RP's...
Note to self... Mention the Jedi Ewok sometime later when the thread needs a boost.
ANYWAY: The realms I'm more comfortable in are Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Darksword, Dragonlance..... And hm.... Little bit in Forgotten realms.
My favorite character types to play? Look at my handle. I'm the number one buggy Elf girl

Then again.... ii did have a DM who would let me get away with a lot of stuff... A beserker half elf.... Though Maric was a cool character. Shame he died of a lame cantrip durring a drunken bar fight.

I never really played much in Dragonlance, I loved Planescape and obviously the Realms, Greyhawk was ok but I hate what they did to it in 3e. ( I also liked Ravenloft and Darksun but never got to play much in them)
I think my best Character was a half-crazed pirate wannabe that was the laughingstock of the Sword Coast....He died badly LOL
Outside of D&D I played Shadowrun, Some Vampire (didn't care for it) Twilight 2000, MERP (Middle-earth Role Playing) and Deadlands. I am looking into Starting a LOTR game as soon as I get the rules down.
I prefer to play Half-elves or humans and usually as Rangers, Clerics or Fighters. I have been wanting to try a paladin or bard lately though.
buggyelfmaiden
May 21 2004, 12:15 AM
bards are fun. I had a few of them.
And when I played Greyhawk it was first ed.
I'm not sure if I like what they did to the 'lance in 3rd ed. It seems more confusing to create good well rounded theives.

i can't remember when i first played, but i was interested in it the moment i heard about it. that was around 9 years ago give or take?
i'm usually a fighter, though i've made the occasional badass monk. i'm more often than not a dwarf or gnome. occasionally a human. i have an extreme dislike for elves, which i can't really explain. something about them bugs me.
not sure what realm we played in. i think a bit of forgotten realms but i'm not sure.
whenever i play as a gnome he has to constantly be degraded, mainly out of unexplainable bad luck. occasionally from a gm who doesn't like the short folk

Haven't looked at the 3e Dragonlance yet. Odd thing I passed it over twice once for Ghostwalk and the other for a 1e copy of Oriental Adventures. (3e OA was butchered bad!)
What got me stsrted for a Bard was an NPC one I made for a game one night that turned out to be a regular.
Chico, I know how you feel about the gnomes man. I actually like them and use them quite a bit. Soon my players will face a Gnomish Bard named Blingle....heh heh They have no idea what they are in for......

Most of my experience as far as D&D goes comes from Bioware's <cheap plug>Neverwinter Nights</cheap plug>...a game that I have been sampling more often than oxygen since I bought it. However, I did play third edition very briefly...it wasn't a very long stint though, a year or so, because I couldn't find a sizeable gaming group...my brother, myself, and a couple of friends who eventually lost interest because it didn't involve fast car chases or explosions.
Most of my characters were halflings or human...I very rarely stepped outside those boundaries. My longest running characters were an epic level halfling rogue named Tuppence Hillfind (who has now been immortalised in pixil form in NWN

) and a human wizard named...*dramatic pause*...Seraphina Tealeaf (who has also been immortalised as above

)
If I'd been able to find a group of people more into the game, I probably would have stayed playing longer...I started out playing Hero Quest from Gamesworkship when I was tiny, and moved onto their more advanced games...then when I fond D&D, it was really what I'd been looking for from those games to begin with
Then my group broke away...and I cried

*Giggles* My brother tried to get me into that. it seemed to FF to me.

Well i'll admit NWN has me as well.

And I know what you mean about groups mine went from 5 to 2 and has held at 2 forever. We still manage to have fun though.
Besides NWN i will admit I have been hooked on Planescape: Torment and Baldurs gate not to mention both Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance games. But, then again I'm pretty addicted to the hobby.
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention earlier I am a constant rules tweaker and houseruler. So if we get into a rules discussion I will be coming from a bit of a different angle.
buggyelfmaiden
May 21 2004, 05:41 AM
Constant house rule breaker here. Sorta.
Then again... the DMs I've played with have weird rules.
Always a player though.. Never the DM
thepsychoticseaotter
May 21 2004, 05:55 AM
Lwt me clairify. I really tweaked alot of 3e's rules since they were wayyyy to cumbersome especially in combat. We've come up with a fatser, cleaner running 3e that has alot of 2e thrown into the mix.
buggyelfmaiden
May 21 2004, 06:00 AM
cool. because that's one of the things that keeps me with 2ed. The battle seemed to be all rules no fun.
I'm usually the characters that moputh off to the Draconian in the bar for the sake of a good brawl.
I'm all for the adventure too. It's just I find if the DM starts to tick me off... I start the rebellious streak.
And yeah... I know I usually play elves... But Wild elves aren't much different then Barbarians. *G*

When me and my friends RP, we usually go by D&D rules combined with freeform elements.
Very rarely do I get to GM...cause whenever I do, all the people who act before thinking die.
Two most recent examples...
I was doing a silent hill scenario with two people. They were playing with one another but didnt realise it.
We did it on the internet...each player on a different IRC server...they were both playing with the same map and playing the same scenario, but they couldnt see the other player (but they could still interract with them...that's how it ended, they both gunned one another down right near the end).
The time before that was a full on two-day campaign. It was set aboard a spaceship...of course they had a mission brief, it read something along the lines of "Terminate all reptilian enemies on board".
The first surprise was when they found that by "Reptilian enemies" I actually meant "Really angry Dinosaurs".
The team was doing pretty well, actually...they started off with ten and had only lost two members (one was through stupidity, learning to never touch buttons unless you have to or you know what they do)
Anyway, they ended up in the cargo bay with a huge supply of poisonous gas. They took the initiative (as expected) and hooked the gas tank up to the air ventilation shaft, pumping it all through the ship.
Then they realised only two of the eight surviving members had brought gas masks.
Five of them died...the two with the gas masks survived, as did the one remaining robot character (since they get immunity to that kinda thing by sacrificing a lot of HP).
So yeah, it's great when I *do* GM...but it's very rare because people seem to die a lot when I'm in the big clue chair.
Also...

We kinna want to start playing D&D, the only problem is we most likely would have no one to play with, but we might be able to talk our sisser into playing, she likes fanstasyness.
Where could we find the..umm..thingythingy....umm, game-thingy....?

Angelfish.
You'd have to go buy a couple of books.
I bought most of mine at a used book store. (Helps I grew up in a college town.) When the college students left they'd sell off their books. So I picked up all the second ed books for like 20 bucks.
The 3rd ed are still new and you can find them in the chain stores (Waldens, Borders) But they be pricey.
Angelfish

I play LotR warhammer, but Im sure thats much diff, but I have some exp in table top gamming atleast!

So how would I go about finding people who play in my neighbourhood? I wouldnt mind finding out how to play and such!

Good game, I lost MONTHS playing that on RP servers. Sorta lost interest a little when my favorate server folded. Nothing else ever seemed to come close to that one, too many teeny hack 'n' slash munchkins even on the supposedly RP servers.
As for D&D, I was already playing in a group using what I think was a modified copy of the old 'chainmail' rules and involved in tabletop wargaming when 1st ed D&D reached the UK. Have played a LOAD of diffrent systems over the years. (A)D&D, Traveler, RuneQuest, Bushido, Call of Cuthuluh, MERP, Rolemaster, TORG, Star Trek, Star Wars, Paranoia, Toon, Marvel superhero's..... I've played and ran most of them and more besides. (Not done much WhiteWolf stuff, just a one off game or two. It mostly took off after I stopped playing as much)
LARP? I started at Treasure trap back in the mists of time when it was based at Pekforton Castle, Was member 001 at Spirit of Adventure (No longer in business I believe) and many a happy adventure with Trouble at' Mill (Definatly defunct now!)
Not had chance to to much RP at all these last 6 years since I moved down to London but a few friends have started a Legend of 5 rings campaign that will hopefully run well (Albeit slowly given we all have.... 'REAL LIVES' *Shock Horror*)

Been rpg'ing since I was about 21.. late starter.. As Mr Syko knows or are you going by Strahd these days again?
Always play an Elf unless it's a rogue Die roll see below..
Ravenloft with it's various denziens.. not always good to be an Elf there esp when comes to Strahd's world or for that matter the Knight of the black rose.
Dragonlance I only played for a week before I got bored.. Think it something to with a rogue die roll and I ended up being a Kendar... which I couldn't get into.
Forgotten Realms was another good campaign..*g* Made friends with an outcast female Drow after saving her life.. I was a cleric in that one.. made for some very interesting conversations...
The World's of Darkness was the realm that I Gm'd/Dm'd. And I loved it.. Vampires. Werewolves. Wraiths, Fey, Wizards.. so much to do and so little time.. *lol*
I had a campaign in that for about 4 years...
I don't get much chance to play now..

Celti! I knew you'd pop in sooner or later.
Well I have decide to shelve Strahd for a bit (I lost my Strahd avatar

)
So I think I'll stay good ol' syko for a bit...That is unless Saruman needs a Mod for the ineveitable D&D threads then I may be persuaded to bring him back

But then agaon for that i think we'd need the Lady of Pain......
Angelfish some of the books can be found cheaper on walmart.com, amazon.com and even ebay. Thats where I got most of my 1e 2e stuff.
BTW Celti I got the origianl 1e Ravenloft module awhile back and a first printing Dieties and Demigods If you wnat pics i'll try to get them up soon.

I would.. but I haven't played in so long. *Need to find a group that plays here*
Unless we want to add in PBEM games
But all of the ones I'm in are a far cryu from the real deal... (What I wouldn't do to be an a group of gamers in a PBEM that actually know how to spell the names of characters in the realms we play in. I mean how hard is it to spell the name of a diety right? They call themselves fans... *Sigh*

hmmm I'd say my current favorite is Silas a 5th level Tiefling fighter that we have nicknamed Lucky.
Basically he ends up being the target of every critical hit and accidental Melf's acid arrow. Somehow he has survived this and has continued on his career. recently he was hit by a tree trunk that was in the hands of a very mean ogre.
Now every game starts with us wondering if Silas will finally die or not.

My coppy was duct taped at the binding to hold it together. And there were so many notes written in the DM guide and player's guide I had that made it a little more interesting.
I got mine off one of the DMs I used to play with, so all the notes were on his wrold he created. Some of them were okay... I'm glad we didn't go over some of the ideas he had jotted down. Since I was the only one who played a female character.
One of his ideas had to do with a sacrifice of elven human blood.
And knowing my DM... He was fond of killing two birds with one stone. If there was a half elf he would have used the half elf for the sacrifice. And of course it had to be a girl... Men just don't apease the gods of his realms.
(Maybe because he couldn't get a date if his life depended on it. I know... I watched him try to talk to girls.... It wasn't pretty.)

Oh his games were great though.
And at least before he went through anything like that he'd go over it with the people involved so that we would know what to expect.
We used a few of my characters that way in order to get the story going because the others in the group were moving to slow. I mean one day (In game) in one section of a small eight room dungeon's pretty slow.

Well, I'm using the Jedi Ewok to give the thread a boost right now
The first AD&D character I played was an Elf Fighter/Mage named Kalen Thantis and he absolutely rocked -
I'll always remember my firstSome other notable characters have been a human Paladin. This was a very frustrating character. Two of my party member's were alligned to Chaotic Neutral which meant they did what they bloody well wanted and didn't care what anyone else thought (especially themselves). Being Lawful Good almost had my own party trying to slit my throat so I wouldn't lecture them in the ways of virtue
They didn't really have the chance to try though. At one point in our mission when we were obscenely powerful characters, we came across the leader of an army who challenged us individually to a dual. Cocky as you like, our character's accepted. The leader wasn't really that powerful, but he owned a vorpal sword. In a cruel twist of fate, each of our six party members lost the initiative to strike first (if we had initiative, any of us could have killed him in one blow). Then to add to our misery the DM rolled 18-20 on a D20 six consecutive times, thus decapatating each of our six characters..... Game over

It was supposed to be a meaningless little side-venture........
Anyway, other notables are a female Dwarf warrior (which was fun, beard and all), a Cleric, a Bard (interesting), a fighter with an intelligence of 6 or 7 (or some obscenely low score - I don't really remember now).
I wish people I knew still played the game. But the gang's just too busy nowadays.
Until next time all,
Malruhn
