CANBERRA, Australia - Couples in Australia now have a nice
incentive to have children - 2,000 bucks for every baby
born after June. Peter Costello, the treasurer of the
country, said that two children per couple in a nation of
20 million just isn't enough to sustain growth. He said it
is the "patriotic duty" of couples to have at least three
children. The initiative will be up for grabs for the next
five years. "You should have ... one for your husband, one
for your wife, and one for your country," Costello said.
Some couples might have to go even further and have extra
children "for your country" to accommodate for the gap left
by those "who are not even replicating themselves." The
father of three ended the news conference by telling repor-
ters, "You go home and do your patriotic duty tonight."

The way I understood it is the world as a whole is underpopulated. Just because some areas are overpopulated doesn't change that.

Underpopulated? Uh.. no sorry.

We don't need more babies, we already have a mass of them that need homes in the states alone. People need to adopt more.

Why is the population falling now? Largely because women are choosing to have fewer children. Trends in child birth rates are usually tracked by following the total fertility rate. The total fertility rate is the average number of children born to a woman of childbearing age. A total fertility rate of 2.1 is considered the level needed to sustain a population with no growth or decline under modern conditions. In 19xx, the world’s total fertility rate was xxx, but by the year 2000 the world’s total fertility rate is projected to be 2.8. The developed world as a whole is well below the zero growth level, with a total fertility rate close to 1.6 – these nations will see their population decline in the future unless they encourage immigration or increase life expectancy dramatically. For the less developed countries, the total fertility rate was about 3.1 – these nations still have growing populations, though a large part of this population growth is occurring in Africa. Current projections forecast that the world’s total fertility rate will reach 2.3 by 2025 – very close to the zero growth level.

We're still not underpopulated. Anymore huge population growths and I doubt the ecosystem could handle it.

It's already on the edge as it is.

And seriously, we need to get homes for those in foster care before cranking out more.

The world is over populated in some areas and underpopulated in others. It does not even out. And adopting is not going to resolve the issue.

just so his comments aren't taken out of context, the whole patriotic duty etc was tongue in cheek, just in case some of you guys missed that from the article:)

Silver,
I tottaly agree with you, we are over populated. We don't more babies, we need to shuffle our kind more!

Maybe they want to fill out the outback a bit more. I also don't see many people near the norht pole. Come on, it get's warmer the closer you get. You might even need to bring your summer clothes with you.

Borrowed link, and off the total topic. But has a lot to do with human population:

Canada has, what, 30 million people.
England has 60 million people.
Canada is about 20-30 times the size of England.

Doesn't make sense huh. Same with Australia. They have so much room!

Need to facter in that Canada has some pretty inhospitable places that only the Inuets will live.

England is smaller, and has had a rather *long* time to "germinate" to the point where people will fill every inch.

Does this guy actually know what he's talking about ?

Australia does have a lot of room, but only about 10% of the whole country is inhabitable
Fox Mulder
i don't know about the 10% thing..i reckon you could probably live anywhere...so long as you don't mind getting your supplies dropped in by plane and your only communication with other civilisation being through the use of a crackly radio. sounds like fun huh!?

if by heaps of room you mean inhospitable wasteland, then sure, you can go live there if you want:)
