A friend recently told me about an experience she's had years ago. She was sleeping and something woke her up. She opened her eyes and was in complete darkness. Normally even if you wake up in the middle of the night you can make out objects in your room, but that was not the case. She got up on all fours on her bed and started crawling towards the edge. She couldn't find the edge of the bed, the walls, the floor, nothing. it was almost as if she were in an abyss. I can't remember exactly how her experience ended, but I wanna say she ended up laying back down, closing her eyes, and waking up in the morning.
Anyway, this story really stuck with me and I was wondering if anyone has ever had this kind of experience or knows anything about it.
Thanks.

I don't mean to sound funny or anything, but did your friend have her eyes open? if so what did she see (all white, all black, blurry)?

Is it possible your friend had a very realistic dream?

Moe has awoken to such things before. they are called power outtages. You would be suprised how much we take light granted.

i want to say either a really realistic dream, or a form of the infamous sleep-paralysis.

Sleep paralysis is when you are paralyzed due to the fact that your muscles paralyze during sleep to prevent you from getting up.
If you read freethinker's post, you will notice her friend never mentions being paralyzed.
I think you're friend was half-asleep when this happened. She was partially awake but still dreaming.

It could have been a case of Hypnogogic Sleep Disorder. Unlike Sleep Paralysis or Sleepwalking, your body is fully awake and mobile before your brain catches up with it. This syndrome has also been associated with Night Terrors..

Maybe she was having a realy bad OBE. Only she would know. That little gut feeling we all get, it usually right!

It could have been a muscle spasm also. Something similar to that happened to me a few weeks ago. I was in bed, under my covers, when all of the sudden I felt something poking me in the arm. I assumed it was my mom trying to wake me up. Then I felt a tugging on the covers as if someone tried to pull them off. I then spontaneously sat up angrily and screamed "ALL RIGHT ALREADY!" But it was dark in my room. Nobody was there. I looked at the clock and it was 3am.

Did you check your room for any signs of Michael Jackson?

Maybe her eyelids were just closed... either by paralysis of the muscles or just a natural glue type stuff keeping them closed.

Maybe she wasn't in her body. She may have been spirit walking.

I saw something once when I was a kid. My grandmother was murdered right before my parents split up; I was seven years old. I was awoken one night to see this creature staring at me from the foot of the bed. It had red eyes and the face of a pig and was black in color. It was wearing a medieval style armor suit and had an executioner's axe that was taller than it was. The most vivid thing I can remember was that it was smiling this malicious, evil grin at me. I screamed out for my mom who was in the bed beside me and she pulled me over to the other bed, as she grabbed me, I looked down to see a mouthful of sharp teeth when the thing had its mouth open. When my mom got me to her bed, nothing else happened. That's the only hallucination I've ever had when I had just came out of sleep. This wasn't sleep paralysis, though. But I've had a fit of it as well....
For about a week last summer, my air conditioner went out. I live in South Carolina and the heat and humidity is enough to almost kill you. I was working third shift at the time, and if I remember correctly, I was off that night and "slept in" late.
At the time this happened, I had a rotating fan in my room next to my bed to try to keep me cool, due to my failed air conditioning unit. I was sleeping face down (which I never do unless I'm tired enough to fall asleep like that acidentally). I suddenly woke up and couldn't move. I couldn't see anything because my face was buried in the pillow (thankfully) and I could hear a noise. It sounded like a huge dog growling. It was a constant growl that got louder every few seconds for the same length of time. At this point, I still couldn't move and I remember being absolutely terrified and not able to move to do anything about it. My heartrate went higher and I felt pressure in my chest. The noise kept getting louder and I couldn't turn my head to see what it was. This is when I was the most afraid. I'm not sure if I just snapped out of it, or if I passed out and woke back up later, but the next thing I knew, I could move again and the noise was gone.
I stayed still and tried to figure out what the hell just happened. After a few minutes, I realized what the noise was that I heard. It was the fan going back and forth and it would get louder whenever it was blowing air directly over my ear. To this day, it hasn't happened to me anymore. I hope it stays that way.
