I have a lot of viruses on my PC. I get them almost every day and I have to problem deleting them becuase they are in my Temporary Internet Files so I feel it's safe to delete pretty much anything in there. But recently I have noticed them in my System 32 folder. I don't know if I can just delete the virus or clean it somehow becuase I'm scared of deleting important files and busting my PC. I can't clean them but I don't know why. I also have viruses in DivX and Windows Media Player. They're all quarantined at the momment but I don't know what to do with them. How do I clean them?
I have Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition if that helps.

We have this thing called McAfree SecurityCenter or something like that, it automatically detects and gets rid of viruses. although, when the virus scan's running it makes the compu veeeeery slow

I take it your getting warnings, what are they identifying?

Filenames and virus names

Also do you have auto protect on and upto date definitions?

They are quarantined in NAV right, not Ad-aware/Spybot S&D etc?

I don't know what you mean by auto protect but I use Live Update to upload new definitions every few days and all new viruses get sent to quarantine. Does this really make them safe?

If this is your home computer and you have lots of virus i suggest you reformat your computer give it a fresh start. You don't have to do this if you don't want to.

Norton is an alright program, but you have to have a front line of defense, to stop stuff from even GETTING on your computer. A firewall that is set correctly will work wonders and keep ALOT of stuff away from your PC. I use ISS Black Ice, a great firewall that is very customizable, but is more for advanced users since it can be confusing. If you want a great free firewall, get the free personal firewall from www.sygate.com

Firewalls will stop things like TROJANS and SASSER from getting into your computer.

The Quarentined files are probably safe from harming, since a virus does just what the name means, and makes copies of itself so to speak, a quarentine is 'medicine' in a way and should stop it from replicating itself and doing a lot more damage. A lot of things I have found are not cleanable, so just keep them in your quarentine or kill them manually.

If you get this many viruses, you not only should have symantic, and get a firewall, you should have symantic running on the system tray (the clock area) at all times, this should scan any incoming files for viruses, and if there is any, it will quarentine the file before you even become infected.

If the problem is really severe and the viruses are doing damage even if as many as you can find are in quarentine, sadly you might have to format your hard drive(s) and reinstall windows, or use the system restore disk included with some PC's and Laptops. I got a new hard drive for my B-Day (Getting it tomarrow) and I have to format, but I am backing up files right now, it is tedious. IF you do have to format, I suggest getting Winrar and putting your files into a compressed folder (.rar) to save space.

Best of luck my friend. original.gif

Well I'll see if I can clean or remove the viruses before formating my hard drive. What if you can't clean the viruses but if you delete them they will damage your PC?
I was reading the link by bh but it says you need to back up your registery. I read the guide on how to do this but I don't have Backup which was needed to do it. Is there a way to do it without Backup?

Have you got XP Home? If so you have it on the CD. It just isn't part of the default installation.

>Put the XP CD
>Go to My Computer
>Right Click on the drive containing the XP CD
>Click Explore
>Click on VALUEADD > MSFT > NTBACKUP
>Click the NTBACKUP Installer Icon
