Hello all. My computer has been freezing right in the middle of the being online lately, just about several times per day. Is that because of some kind of virus I don't know I picked up or because I need to defrag the computer? We did it not too long ago because we had the sasser worm. Any help is apprechiated from you computer geniouses out there!

I am a mac user so I am unsure, we never get viruses! tongue.gif Do you have a first aid programme that you can run to repair any problems that might be on your hard drive? This is my only suggestion but I am sure you will get much better ides's from someone else. original.gif

I've always wondered why if MACs were so much better than the rest, how come not a lot of people have them?

Anyway, i'm not sure. This really isn't my computer, but my moms. My computer is in Michigan waiting for me to return home. This computer is different than mine, so I'm not sure what it has. I know that Norton anti-virus isn't working, that's what the question was

People don't buy Macs because the software etc is very expensive. However Macs are worth every penny I think.

Just another thought it could be to do with the cable company or the modem you are using. My screen froze up the other day because my company were doing 'work' on the system.

I had to laugh at that. I just finally got mine bact to normal. YES my friend, it is a virus. The problew I had with this one was exactly the same as yours. I have Norton vius protection, so I am very po'd that I even got it. The Norton could not delete it after it was quarentened. So, I had to go threw every stinkin file one by one and scan it till I found where it was. It was in my common files. I hope that helps you. Try searching for "Systemic virus definitions" copy the list. Mine were on there. GOOD LUCK!

Sorry, that was SYSTMANTEC. oops!I am a nurse, so, systemic/systmantec too close for me. hahaha! I have a list I wrote down of the files I needed to delete. So I hope this help. Maybe you can just do a search for the files then delete them. Hbinst polall pre.Ins Twaint.ec wupdt msbb.exe lycos and anything from Adware is bad for your pc. GOOD LUCK!

What OS are you using?
saucy
Thanks for your help. I haven't had any more probelms with it so I'll wait and see if it happens again. If it does, I'll do what you suggested. Bleeding heart, I don't know what O's are. Oreos? I sure love oreos
Magikman
lol, yes obviously one's that have been 'created', not the better tasting 'evolved' oreos, am I right?

By OS he's asking you what 'operating system' the computer uses, 'windows, linux, etc. etc.

1. Run Disk cleaner

2. Run Defrag

3. You could try disabling the indexing service, unless you frequently use the search feature.

>Click Start
>Click Control Panel
>Click Add/Remove Programs.
>Click the Add/Remove Window Components.
>Simply unclick the Indexing services and click next!

or

>Click Start
>Click Control Panel
>Click Administrative Tools
>Click Services
>Right Click Indexing Servce
>Click Properties
>In startup type select disabled
>Click Stop
>Click OK
Dowdy
dont defrag. it takes too long and it rarely does anything.

i had a similar problem

do this

download ad-aware standard here

download spybot search and destroy 1.3 here

download advast 4 home antivirushere

install and update. turn off your internet and run those programs.

that should work and if it doesn't, your computer will be free of all viruses, trojans, spyware and adware anyways

surprisingly i didn't use any pirated sofware for this. Very unlike me tongue.gif

After doing exactly what Dowdy says (Adaware and Spybot S & D) to clean your computer, take it one step further:
Download SpywareBlaster 3.1 from here (Javacool) This will prevent any spyware/adaware from reinstalling itself.

Once you have installed them go back to the site and get any updates that may not have downloaded.

Also keep your anti-virus software up to date.

I did all this months ago (as well as switched my Anti-Virus/Firewall software) and have never had a problem since.

If you had the sasser worm, you should check out McAfee virus software site. Their virus software is updated daily and they have dat files that specifically target the sasser worm, it also would be prudent to go to the microsoft site to update their latest patch to stop this worm from getting into your computer in the first place.

From previous experience of having a worm in my computer, the ultimate cure was to save to cd or disc anything of value on the computer and then scrub the hard drive and reload your software, making the anti-virus software one of the first things you put back on. The worms generally come through email, so get yourself an email washer. Pop3Washer does an excellent job, allows you to check who emails are from, if you are unsure of the content, it can then be deleted at the server before it gets to your computer.
