Edit: For the Blackburn avatar, it would be difficult to do what you ask because the writing is curved, I'll have a go though.

Anyone else got any ideas how to do it? The only thing I can think of at the moment is using WordArt to see if I can match the curves

Don't let it discourage you JBC, you're stuff is still great and I think it's fantastic you're having a go. You've come a long way in just a few days and you shouldn't put your work down

I think an important thing to remember is trying to imagine how things move in real life. Things like lightning/ blinking/ gunfire should never be more than one frame as they are too fast for the eye to see.

What should be animated is the effect of the lightning or gun, so you'd have one frame for the lightning and then a few for the flash afterwards. Or in this example, one frame for the cannon shot then a few for the smoke afterwards.

I hope that wasn't too patronising, it's meant to help not hinder

Ai Umm.. well I have photoshop 7 all I did with the Footy badge was cut out the writing (I used my tablet so I had more control) and then cut and pasted to a new layer, grabbed the eyedropper tool and got the base colour and filled in the now blank area of the badge, and then picked Trebuchet MS and wrote "Simply the Best" and lined it up using Free Transform... then went into image ready and set two frames up and tweened them...
Fairy I used my star brushes that I made in photoshop and grabbed base colours and stuck some here and there... then set my brush to a 45 degree angle and repeated.. then went over them a couple of times with the blur tool set on luminosity and then the dodge tool to lighten them (so they were visible) and went into image ready and animated

JBC if you have photoshop I can make a tutorial for practice and getting to know the basics of the tools?

I think the biggest issue I'd have with an avatar like that is his beard would hang over his collar, and putting the collar below his beard would make him look like he had an incredibly long neck! If you have a picture with a shorter beard perhaps that would be best?

Also, how would you like him animated? Mouth moving? Hair waving? Or some sort of text movement?

Perhaps a flash from his eye would be good, similar to the flash in my current avatar. Or otherwise just a text. I know what you mean about the beard thing! You could just give it a try and give him a long neck but I'll search for a shorter bearded socrates anyway.

Yep, I reckon he looks very long necked in that one...

...so here's one I put together, the original photo of the socrates bust was from a lower perspective so you can still have a beard and see his neck, and therefore the collar too.

I pasted in the shoulders and collar of a vicar I found a pic of on top and hey presto, so assuming this image is ok, what would you like animated?

I think this ones better off with thebarman, i cant figure out anything that i could do...

About the animation... The fact that he is looking up seems to be significant so what about a light beaming down on him? Or a flash from his right eye?

For some reason, whenever i try to do ANYTHING on Photoshop, it says "Error, not enough Memory (RAM)"

Any suggestions?

how much RAM does your computer have?

The only thing i could suggest would be to clean out your computer of any unused or unwanted items, put things you dont use, but dont want to delete onto a CD (or a few), do a disk cleanup, defrag, and then try it again.

It's the maximum size for an avatar I'm afraid, 115 x 115 pixels, being rectangular in shape it means only the hieght can be 115, the width is 86. It could be wider but I'd have to draw extra picture myself which would invariably decrease the quality.

That said, a light beaming down sounds great, I'll see what I can do but I may need to ask the assistance of another animator here. I draw everything (Still!) with Windows Paint so light/flashing effects are pretty difficult to do without the artistic prowess of photoshop.

I'll give it my best shot, and if it's awfull I'll call in some backup

On a seperate note, the seriously out-of-date Gallery is getting on my nerves, it was a great idea to begin with but due to the amount of space all the avatars take up it's impossible to view all of them in one visit as the site exceeds its bandwidth.

So, we need a new solution, I propose we all host our avatars elsewhere, like photobucket.com, and then each have a post with all our avatars in. Then I can link each post to the first post in this thread so every animator can have their own page so to speak.

So what do we think? The only issue I can see is that there may be a limit to the amount of images you can post in one thread, I've yet to find out.

Hey, barman, if you need me to, I can host your guy's avatars. So you can put them on a website or something.

I have an FTP on a friend's computer.

Cheers Janiel thats kind of you but we're talking nearly 200 avatars here, not to mention everytime someone does an avatar you'd need to update everything, it might end up being more hassle than it's worth.

Anyway, I just asked SaRuMaN and he says there's no limit to the amount of images you can link in a post, so if we all have our own posts we can all do our own updating and not have to bother anyone else, and every animator can display their work not just me and UA

It wouldn't be hard to update it. (Just saving, and doing a drag-and-drop into a folder.) But simply posting them seems a tad easier. Let me know if you change your mind or anything.

There have been so many avatars I can't remember which ones I've done from scratch, which ones people used, or even ones I haven't touched.

There may be some avatars here that I downloaded with the intention of altering but never got round to it so if you find one here that's your work and not mine (UA, this probably only applies to you) please accept my apologies and tell me and I'll remove it.

Allright, as far as i can tell, these are ALL the animations ive done for avatars, wether or not they were used... thats another story

Some of my animations were done in conjunction with thebarman, Credit is due to both, considering that some things he can do that i cant, and vice versa.

Any animation that looks like it may be a double is not, there are variations and sometimes something completely different

I thought there was a memory limit? Oh well perhaps not, I guess I could do the same but I have a few gripes with it. One is that I didn't really want to upload everything onto UM like an image host, the other is you have to click on many of the animations to see them move.

Still, each to there own I guess it doesn't really matter, I'll link your post to the first post now

Edit 2: Again, I only count 40 (different) ones, you've done WAY more I'm sure
