Pop superstar Madonna has confirmed her allegiance to the Kabbalah has inspired her to change her name to Esther.
The "Like a Virgin" star - who was photographed last year wearing a necklace with an 'E' pendant - was eager to alter her name after devoting herself to the mystical offshoot of Judaism.
Although Madonna was originally named after her late mother Madonna Fortin Ciccone - who died of breast cancer in 1963 - she insists her identity change was sparked by her desire to experience renewed "energy" through another title, not because she wanted to disassociate herself from her dead mother.
She says, "I was named after my mother. My mother died when I was very young, of cancer, and I wanted to attach myself to another name."
"This is in no way a negation of who my mother is. I wanted to attach myself to the energy of a different name."
In the Old Testament of the Bible, Esther was a heroine queen who saved her fellow Jews from a mass killing. Esther's story is celebrated by Jewish people every year during the Purim Festival.
