I was just wondering can someone who wants to reall mess up a computer like that in chat. And he didn't even know my e-mail so could he really mess my computer with just a chat room username?
I was just curious thanks.

My cousin had personal experience like this.It actually possible for them to do it .i know a program that can hack MSN and get there email password.(im still puzzled on how they work) (i found out the hacker that hacked my cousin(i also know his address phone number etc im might prank him and impersonate as cop Anyway hacker can do lots of $#!+ to you in chat like ICQ i stumbled to a site on google search that has lots of hack for ICQ. TO protect yourself: *Get a good firewall anti virus etc (as mentioned by other members)(firewall might not work cause you set the firewall to allow the chat and hacker can take advantage of it to hack your computer cause they know you allowing the chat)Theres your exploit that they can get in *Try and get a dynamic ip address(changing IP)(cause your ip change and when the ip change the hacker can't hack you anymore) *limited temptation to flame someone *Common sense IF you do get threatened disconnect your internet then reconnect if you have a dynamic ip contact the internet company to see if you can change your ip if you have a static ip(non-changing ip) and get a new username for your chat KEEP IN MIND IT TAKES MINUTES FOR THEM TO HACK YOUY COMPUTER THRU THESE CHAT SYSTEM. Even if you do have fire wall because YOU set the firewall to allow these chat to go thru the hacker can take advantage of it to get in your computer(so firewall is probably useless in this situation) SO D12 that person is just bluffing that threatend you if he was serious he would of done it by now.

Yes, he can do that D12. He can get a hold of your ip address and then if he has enough no-how he can mess with you big time. Make sure you get youself a really good firewall and be very careful who you argue with in chat rooms. Most likely though he was only trying to scare you, nect time you might not be so lucky.

Fulltimekiller, Im not exactly sure how the password cracker works, but if you have your password automatically written in when you go to that site (saved) and your username, both of them are stored in a cookie which can be easily compromised. Also yes you will usually allow the chat program, but there are ways to get around it, just turn program control off and block most incoming traffic. Try and make sure all your common ports are closed and blocked (not visible with a port scan) and that you have some sort of backup plan if your firewall is compromised.

I hate hackers. I hate them as much as I hate theives (and I dislike theives alot). Two months ago some (No insult known to man will express the feeling I have) hit my computer with some virus. I was playing a game and was in 1st place and then my nortan anti virus told me I had a virus called a TRojan horse (Never heard of it (the virus not the legend)) and nortans also told me it could not handle it. So now I have this $%&%^#&@$$&^@#%^ virus which slows my computer down and makes pop ups apear every 2 seconds (I'm not on that computer right now). My moms real low on money right now so she can't go get it fixed right now. Do these people know what damage they cause? Do they now that I want to find them and (this portion of this post has been removed due to voilen content). Ugh I hate hackers

a couple of corrections jenk. 1:A trojan horse (trojan) is not a specific virus but rather a genre named after the greek legend because it can go in as another file and remain completely disguised, I could right now send someone a copy of Paint wich I had infected with subseven (the most common and widely used trojan)and they would never know it, they could use the paint program as normal and the backdoor would be setup and melted into there system without there ever knowing, I could have a alert send to my email Mirc instant messenger icq or ftp server and start up my server editor and make there disk drive open and close, delete required system files reboot there computer, anything at my very whim I could even start up a dialogue with the individual if I wanted Theres countless other trojans some much harder if impossible to detect if custom made by a certain person then norton may never detect it, norton is a VERY shitty anti virus program, because it is so easy to disable and so widely use. of course im not a hacker |

Im not a lamer thank you, although upon rereading my post its sort of comes of as if I actully use subseven, In truth I rarely hack unless someone in a ym chat pisses me off, and the only way to really do that is try to boot me, then you get a nice new paperweight the size and weight of your Hardrive
