My story cont.

Harry gave chase but the little girl was fast. Cheryl had always been a pretty fast runner, sometimes they would play and Harry would pretend to not be as fast as her but as she got older he really did have to try to keep up! He could still make out the little figure ahead of him in the fog as he chased behind her. Why on earth was she running from him? Maybe she was disoriented from the crash still. Yes that had to be it. Ahead of him Cheryl left the road and ran down a small alley between two buildings. Harry paused at the opening to the alley. It was pretty small. He'd never been down there before but was pretty sure it was a dead end. It was one of those little alleys behind the houses where the garbage pickup was every tuesday. He jogged down the alley, hopping over a pile of trash in the middle of the alley. Still no sign of a single other human being. That fact was nagging at his brain, telling him to get the hell out of Silent Hill. Maybe there was somekind of contamination in the area and everyone was indoors, sick and dying from the plague? He bit his tongue and ran a little faster, then heard the sound of a rust gate swing open and close a few feet ahead of him in the fog. A couple seconds later he came to the gate himself. It had a large 'BEWARE OF THE DOG' sign on it Harry noticed as he pushed it open. There was no where else for Cheryl to go, she must have gone down this way.
Harry closed the gate behind him, looked down and let his jaw drop in absolute horror. Looks like he didn't have to beware of the dog anymore. The dog looked like it had swallowed a bomb and had exploded from the inside out. Blood and organs and bone fragments stained the concrete ground and wall it was teathered to, it's leash still attached to some unregognisable lump of red flesh. Harry fought the urge to throw up all over himself and inspected the remains of the corpse a little closer. It stank like it had been dead for a day at least. Cheryl had come this way? He suddenly felt the urge to find her even stronger and side stepped the dead animal. It certainly wasn't what he had expected to see in this place at all, but the cause of it would have to wait until he found Cheryl.

The new path around the back of the houses Harry followed was very narrow. The walls on either side of him were a dark sooty grey stone that stretched up into the mist above, he couldn't see how far. He was walking now down the winding twisting path. Something about the path didn't seem right. Was it supposed to go this far? He had a feeling he'd be emerging from the otherside of the houses any second. The path took another turn and the path became even smaller, cluttered with rust coloured pipes and the like. Harry shivered and stuck his hands in his pockets. It was really cold! If he didn't find Cheryl soon she would surely catch her death of cold. 'Cheryl?' he whispered into the alley, but not a sound replied to him. Rounding yet another corner he came to a high steel gate crowned with barbed wire. It was unlocked and he stepped through, gently closing it behind him. Then he forze and looked up at the sky. It started to rain, little spits of rain fell onto his face from the white haze of mist above him. He watched the sky, amazed. The white of the mist slowly faded as he watched, until there was no mist at all, but he did not see a clear blue sky as he expected. Instead he was greeted by a thick blackness, so dark he could see even less than he could through the mist. In a matter of seconds the mist had faded to nothing and the daylight had changed to midnight. How could that be? He waved a hand infront of his face, couldn't even see it through the complete suffocating darkness. It was so cold now the air seemed to bite at him, it was painful. Harry had to admit it, he was afraid. He couldn't see anything, couldn't hear anything, the only assurance that he was still awake was the feeling of the rain on his head and the sounds of it lightly patting across the concrete path. He held out his hands and felt the cold stone wall on his left, and decided to press on. He was afraid for himself, but the thought of Cheryl out there in the darkness shivering in the rain terrorized him. Then he remembered, the matches! Just before they left the town of Sewell to journey to Silent Hill, Harry had brought Susans father a cigar and a pack of waterproof matches. That man loved his cigars. Quickly Harry reached into his pocket and pulled out the small box of matches. They wouldn't be much use but they were long-life and windproof, they would at least give him some relief to the darkness and maybe a little warmth too. He struck one against the wall, satisfied with the tiny light the match gave off. It illuminated the wall on eitherside of him and a little of the ground in a creepy orange glow. Harry pressed on down the path.

Harry hadn't gone far before he heard a sort of rusty wheel sound up ahead of him. The match went out and quickly he lit a new one, feeling a little more confortable in the unnatural darkness with the light. The sound got louder and he saw that the source of the noise was in the corner of the next turn. He slowly crept up to the object strewn against the wall. It was a wheelchair. A rusted red wheelchair that sat on one side, the other wheel up in the air and turning slightly creating the squeeky rusty sound. Harry reached out and stopped the wheel from turning, then just started at it. He really couldn't think of a creepier thing to have in a long winding alley through darkness. What was it doing there? The match went out and Harry ran a hand through his short matted hair. It was wet from the rain which still fell gently to the ground through the darkness. Harry lit another match, turning his back against the strange sight, trying and failing miserably to make sense of it. He continued down the alley, his brown leather boots splashing in the puddles forming along the path. This was all crazy, completely crazy, he thought to himself. Insane. It was like the crash had knocked him into some nightmare world where anything was possible.
Nothing had prepared him for what he would see around the next corner.

A hospital bed lay to one side of the path, Harry saw with his matches. One of those metal beds with wheels on the bottom and velcro restraints. As he got closer he saw two of them infact, the first one had a nasty red stain right in the middle of it and when Harry moved a little closer to the next bed he saw that there was a sheet covering something on the bed. Then he noticed the smell. It was awful. It reminded him of one summer when he was 12, he had fallen on his bike and landed a foot away from a skunk that had been hit by a car and left to bake in the hot sun for a few days. The smell made his eyes water and made him spit up all of his lunch. It was the same smell that came of that table. He almost had no doubts what was under that sheet without seeing the blood on the sheet giving off a telltale humanoid figure. If that was a body under that sheet on that table, as he suspected, it must have been skinned alive. Harry had no intention of finding out. His mind was numb. There he was, in a neverending alley he'd been following for at least 15 minutes, soaked wet with rain, plunged into absolute darkness, with two hospital beds one sporting a bloody corpse covered with a sheet. Well, he thought. Certainly has been a great vacation so far. Then the match went out. 'sh**' he hissed and fetched a new one quickly from his box of matches. He did not want to be left in the darkness with this stinking corpse. In his panic he dropped the matches on the ground, heard them all clatter on the wet path. His breathing rapid, he crouched and scooped up a handful, striking them against the wall. After 3 or 4 attempts on lit. Quickly he swung the match over to the hospital beds.
The corpse on the bed, was gone.
Harry didn't know what to do. He stood still and started at the empty hospital bed. The blood stained sheet was flung aside on the ground and Harry could see blood on the bed in the shape of a person. So much blood! What happened to the body? It it get up in his confusion? Did someone pull it away? Harry had never been more scared in his life. He was not partial to bodies stashed in alleyways that got up and went for a walkabout by themselves. He felt on the verge of a breakdown, simply staring wide-eyed at the empty bed. This can't be happening. Then his thoughts turned to Cheryl. She was in this alley and damned if he was going to turn back now. That did it. Cauiously he took a step forward, and another, until he was clear of the beds and continuing down the alley, needless to say alot slower than he was. Now he had two people to find, he realised. That man might be stumbling around in the darkness, hurt.
