But in the Book of Lost Memories (Page 105), it says...
Which suggests that Saint Nicholas was around during the 19th century at the latest; which means he couldn't have been treating Alessa.
Well, the way i decipher that, 'fairly recently' and 'after the civil war' means that the three Saints were established anytime between the end of the Civil War, and now. Plus, we know that obviously Saint Alessa was established, in SH timeline, about 30 years ago or so at tops. Jennifer was one of the original founders just after the war, so the doctor really could have come in anywhere around there.

I see what you mean, I just wish there was a little bit more to go by though. I've been reading lots of different plot analyses and old forum posts trying to find out more information on him, but there's pretty much nothing. Leaves room for speculation though I suppose.

I've been seeing quite a few things about the birth of God, and St. Jennifer being there...is that a mistake or did God appear another time before Alessa? (I think I'm missing one of the key points of the history of Silent Hill?

St. Jennifer was a founder of The Order. We know they've been around pretty much since the birth of modern Silent Hill, since they had their hands in everything from drug traffiking to politics in the town.
No idea if their 'God' had been born in the past though. I was always under the assumption that Alessa was the first to be born the mother of God.

Well I can't remember exactly where I got the Play Novel originally, but if you sign up to this free website you can download it:
http://www.dgemu.com/gba-details-19.htmlAs for Jennifer Carol, in my version of the history, she is made the first leader of the congregation after the religion is set up, before it was called The Order and before the town was called Silent Hill. At first, the settlement was mainly Christian, and they did not have female leaders in the church or politically; when Samael was introduced as being a female God, at first they fully rejected the religion, and again they began to reject it when she was put into power. Only the "skilled tongue of the serpant" charmed the town into becoming followers of the occult with his charisma (more is explained in the story). Part of their religion was about shunning, or even killing, Christians (Puritans) who forced their religion onto those of the occult. A group of cult members killed some traveling christians when they came to the town, and in retalliation they captured Jennifer and burned her alive (Flame Purifies All). After her death, the christians leave because they feel they have done enough damage, yet by killing Jennifer, the rest of the cult members see that their priestess and their religion isn't invincible, and things begin to collapse. The "serpant" (a mysterious man who brought the religion to the town) is cast away from the settlement, and not long an epidemic hits. When the town is later reestablished as Silent Hill and the religion is reborn from documents found at the old site, Jennifer Carol is recognised as a heroin for being such a prominant leader for a female and for dying an "innocent death" that they make her a Saint.
I also wrote (it's a very rough draft) a few scriptures of The Order's Bible, and the phrases on the six paintings in Silent Hill 3 are excerpts from these scriptures. In it are the subjects of The Great Creation, the First Death of God, the Rain of Brass Petals, the Holy Mother and the 21 Sacraments, the Rebirth of God, and other things. I really should get that finished lol.

Well, it seems you see that Konami has been doing quite abit of research this year.
Into ruining game franchises.

I think it was Capcom that originally wrote the book. "How to Ruin a Game Franchise For Dummies." And Konami may have bought every single copy. It worked pretty well on SH4, and they seemed to have followed it word for word when they outsourced Silent Hill Origins to the makers of MOTO GP and ATV for frig sake.
And now, with the aid of this new book they have indeed created a true horror game it seems. A game so horrible, fans of the franchise may actually be left feeling like they want to stab themselves in the face! I know i do.

Despite that I don't like light gun games (House of the Dead, Time Crisis, Area 51), the graphics for Silent Hill Arcade aren't too shabby. That's about all I can say, really. I would have to agree somewhat with seeking, though. Silent Hill 5, a TRUE remake to the original Silent Hill, or some other Silent Hill that stays true to the series is what we all want, not Silent Hill Origins, not Silent Hill Arcade, not Silent Hill Kart 64. However, it could be a fun game, and if it's fun, why not play it?
To make an excellent new Silent Hill game, the developers should look back at what worked and what didn't in the past Silent Hill games.
Silent Hill 1 Pros: Great graphics for the time; an amazing plot; excellent use of fog and darkness; one of the first (if not the first) psychological horror games; a vast town to explore; interesting enemies; sub-characters that you could really get into; a whole new feeling to survival horror games.
Silent Hill 1 Cons: Poor voice acting; a main character that seemed sort of bland; repetitive fighting; some awkward controls.
Silent Hill 2 Pros: Again, most of the things that was great about Silent Hill one, with a better feeling for combat, a much improved main character and sub-characters.
Silent Hill Cons: Voice acting was an improvement from the first, but many lines still didn't feel right; controls still need work.
Silent Hill 3 Pros: Graphics are surprising even for today; better voice acting, along with many of the things for the past games.
Silent Hill 3 Cons: Short gameplay (for me anyway); focus on guns rather than melee; not much of a town to explore; plot could have been more psychological like the previous two than it was.
Silent Hill 4 Pros: New element to the plot (the room aspect); first person play (improved moving around in the small room I think); good voice acting; graphics were good, although not an improvement from 3; interesting monsters and sub-characters
Silent Hill 4 Cons: bland main character; Eileen limping everwhere; unkillable enemies; no vast town to explore (very linear gameplay); not all of the monsters were great (the...um... things at the hospital that burped when you hit them; the victims); not much psychological horror elements; the hud on screen; your guns.
There are definately more pros and cons to examine on all of these games, but I believe I got the bulk of them. For Silent Hill 5 to succeed, I think it needs the following: A very realistic, interesting main character that you can relate to, care about, and enjoy playing as (James, for sure) as well as great sub-characters that you like seeing on screen (Laura, Kaufmann, Eddie, Angela, Lisa); villains that improve the story (Maria, Alessa, Dahlia); Great graphics (Silent Hill 1-2-3); major focus on melee combat; a storyline that deals with the psychological aspects of the characters (Silent Hill 2); returning to Silent Hill; having a feel for something "new"; use of fog and darkness; monsters that are interesting as well as horrifying; non-linear gameplay (running around the town in Silent Hill 1 and 2, remember how good that felt for the first time?).

Mmm... I see. Trust me, you're gonna like it. One advice though: try to get one of those Custom Firmwares when you get it instead of updating to the official firmware. The reason is that that way you can use another software: Web Browsers, Emulators, etc. If you need any help with that just PM me and I'll help ya

Now, as for SH, well, you can say that the last couple of games have been like that. Scratch that, the whole series is about exploring (and in the way you kill stuff, but that's not the focus).
It's not really that important in a game like this what do you do, but how you do it. And if they get that part right, I'm happy.

Yes, as a matter of fact i've been pretty impressed with the new angle the team has taken with this game, they appear to have revamped the style and graphics to be more, well, like Silent Hill.
The story appears to tie in to SH1 more than we originally thought. That girl is indeed Alessa, it was actually Travis that finally saved Alessa from the fires buring and consuming her. (After of course Dahlia locked Alessa in her room and started the fire)
I don't really like that they made this insignificant truck driver out to suddenly be such an important character, since he hasn't been mentioned in any game post this one. But, well, i actually wanna play it now, just for the story. *fingers crossed for a PS2 port*

If there isn't a PS2 port, I probably won't get to play it (i'm not getting a PSP just for this game--i'll spoil myself on some forum to learn what's going on). I'm with you Burnside on the fact that Travis seems to be such a major character in Silent Hill's past yet Dahlia, Kauffman, Claudia, Vincent, Alessa, or anybody has mentioned him in prior games. Hopefully the story will turn out well and not just some stupid tie-in (i.e. Silent Hill 4's pictures on Henry's wall).
Is the game now viewed in a more traditional angle and not from a Resident Evil 4 over-the-shoulder angle?

I don't think so unfortunately. In a recent interview i remember something from the actual Team Silent saying that Silent Hill 5 would revert back to more traditional cameras, unlike Silent Hill Origins. So i think this may still be played with a sort of 2nd person feel.

There is a one-page preview of Origins in the new issue of PSM. It says the team tried to make the game as much like the first three games as possible, with some elements from the 4th, such as breakble melee weapons. The screens look absolutely awesome. This is really going to be a tradition SH-style game. It also mentions the appearances of characters like Dr. Kaufman and Dahlia. I'm really looking forward to this game now and there's no way I'm passing it up. It's scheduled for release in August.
EDIT: The article talks about the second movie briefly. Nothing we don't already know, except for the fact the script is once again being written by Roger Avery. Pretty dissapointing. His script for the first movie was crap. Good thing Gans was there to make it good.

vague Japanese interview on SH5
Silent Hill 5 is under large rumors lately because of the lack of communication between Konami and the fans. Electric Shock magazine have had the chance to speak with Masashi Tsuboyama, the cheif director, about the next Silent Hill game.
DP: Tsuboyama-san, rumours of Silent Hill 5 have been spreading but lack of official word is causing some doubt in the fanbase. Can you state if you are officially developing Silent Hill for next generation consoles?
Tsuboyama-san: Konami are yet to release an official statement regarding Silent Hill 5 which means we cannot comment on progress until we are given the OK. However I can say that we have some ideas down and perhaps something to show in the year future.
DP: Have you made any thoughts on the platform which Silent Hill will appear?
Tsuboyama-san: Like I said, we only have ideas but we have been assessing next-generation consoles such as Sony's Playstation 3. We have looked at other consoles too but they exact limitations which could delay progress. We have not decided the console yet.
DP: Would going multi-platform be an option?
Tsuboyama-san: Silent Hill 1 to 3 have all been multi platform appearing on either Playstation 3, Xbox or PC. This was when we were working at DVD level with no HD needed. Mutli-Platform will be discussed but nothing is certain yet.
DP: PS3 uses Blu-Ray technology, would you actually need this or is it just a novelty?
Blu-Ray will be a great asset to the developer in the future. 50GB of storage is a huge jump from what we had [9BG Dual Layer] at DVD level. Saying that, we have not had too much trouble fitting the games on a CD as was the case with Silent Hill for Playstation or DVD for Silent Hill's 2 to 4 but in those times we have not had HD involved and more complex environments and detailed character models which next-gen allows.
DP: Are these limitations involving the Playstation 3's cell processor which is hard to utilize?
Tsuboyama-san: The Playstation 3 is a complex piece of hardware. With that limitation once worked around can result in something wonderful. Which is why the playstation 3 is harder to develop for because its new but when we work round the idea then it can rise above the other lead consoles in processing power.
DP: Would console sales aid your choice?
Tsuboyama-san: Nintendo and Microsoft have a strong lead ahead Playstation 3 in the West. This im sure will pass if the price drops and when games which appeal to the wider audience arrive. A large thing I noticed for Western shores is that Playstation 3 doesn't have any soccer games! I know the popularity of soccer in the west so Konami are delighted to be making such a sought-after game.
DP: Microsoft Xbox 360 sales are low in Japan and the Playstation 3 sales are declining. While these decline PS2 sales are stable and Wii sales are quite high. Does this suggest that its not the right time for next gen?
Tsuboyama-san: The Xbox 360 is definatly a candidate. However the sales are Japan are unimpressive. It does have a large installed based in the West though which will be looked at. While Nintendo Wii sales are very high, and i applaude Nintendo for their sucess, I dont think Silent Hill is a game that would be sold on Nintendo Wii as much as a game like Zelda would worldwide. This by no means says we will not consider the idea but the general opinion is that Wii is for family games and im sure the fans don't play Silent Hill with their grandma!
DP: The consoles vary in terms of processing power, output and control, who could this effect the choice?
Tsuboyama-san: Yes and no. Like before mentioned, Playstation 3 is complicated to work with but gives a excellent result. It also offers a HDD "install" functions to cut load times like Genji: Days of the Blade uses and words very well. Nintendo Wii would be easier to make for but the control scheme would be hard to implement in a Silent Hill game.
DP: Can we expect an announcement at this years E3 in July?
Tsuboyama-san: [Laughs] Konami have a Press Conferance on Wednesday July 11th at 5:45. Im not saying Silent Hill 5 will definatly be there but you should be!

----------
QUOTE
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) – July 11, 2007 - Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc., today announced Silent Hill 5 (working title) for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. Silent Hill 5 marks the debut of the renowned psychological horror series on next generation consoles. The game thrusts players into a shadowy world of chaos and terror with atmospheric high definition graphics and an original storyline that sheds new light on the desolate, fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill.
Silent Hill 5 marks the return of the series that has become one of the leading horror franchises in the world, launching a number of hit entertainment products, including a successful and acclaimed motion picture. The game follows Alex Shepherd, a war veteran returning home from an overseas tour of duty to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his younger brother, Joshua. His travels will lead him through the small, insular community of Shepherd’s Glen and eventually through the hauntingly empty streets of Silent Hill.
Building upon the series’ trademark foundations of atmosphere, adventureand storytelling, Silent Hill 5 introduces players to a frightening new experience. When confronted by the perverse incarnations of evil that roam Silent Hill and Shepherd’s Glen, players will be able to utilize an enhanced combat system and execute a number of offensive and defensive maneuvers as they experience every terrifying encounter with the game’s numerous nightmarish creatures. Players will also have to solve a variety of puzzles as they progress through the highly atmospheric game world, using cues from the environment to unlock Silent Hill’s darkest secrets. Continuing the series’ tradition of standout music and sound design, Silent Hill 5 features an original soundtrack by famed composer Akira Yamaoka.
“Silent Hill 5 is an international, cross-cultural production, with leading development talent from around the globe collaborating to raise the bar even higher for this incredible series,” said Brian Christian, Vice President of Product Development at Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “With gritty graphics and sound that create a haunting atmosphere to all-new visceral gameplay elements, Silent Hill 5 truly epitomizes the extent to which next-generation hardware can enhance the player’s overall gaming experience.”
----------
Apparently the game is being developed by The Collective, Inc. (Click), the same team who've made games like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Marc Eckō's Getting Up. I don't know why it was handed over to them, I think it was one of the worst decisions they could have made. Apparently Team Silent don't have anything to do with the project at all.
But there are rumours that Team Silent's working on their own project based on the original plot of Silent Hill 3 which was scrapped for being too dark.

Yeah I agree with you on that Raptor: I have no idea why Team Silent isn't helping with Silent Hill V and the worst thing they can do is not allow them to work on this project. The new developers might make a game 10X better than the original team (Tomb Raider Legends), but there is indeed some major concern because chances are this game will be a huge departure from original games and have a much different feel. I am suprisingly more pleased with Silent Hill Origins now than I was a year ago; returning to a look and feel of the first three games is the direction it needs to be in. I have a love/hate feeling about exploring the "origins" of Silent Hill, though. As much as I want to know what exactly happened before Harry came to the town, in the same way I don't want to know what happened; the first game was beautifully done and left many questions to the mind, that forced me and surely other players to repeatedly play the game in search of more clues in order to craft their own conclusions to how everything went down. As long as things are made more clearer yet there are still plenty of questions left to be answered, then I'll be happy.

Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, The Grudge and what their names are. Friends of good horror had it very easy with the PS2. There was only two series which guaranted the creep: Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
As Capcom made the decision to bring Resident Evil 5 up to the next console generation, Konami also announced Silent Hill V for the next gen. But at the same time a displeasure made its way round with the fans. The reason was Konami's decision for the developer-team. The original studio was not assigned to make the first next gen Silent Hill game, but instead the American team The Collective. Only the scary soundtrack is made by Akira Yamaoka which also stands aside the Americans to give tipps. The Collective is absolutely aware of its responsibility and shows their ambitious and promising plans.
Drawn from unutterable suffering and pain.
With the choice of the character The Collective sure stands.

> Click for image <Face the hardest challenge. They have to be believable and the main character emotional torn. Alex Shepherd is 22 years old when he recovers from at a military hospital from a wound sustained in the war. Which war is it? The Collective won't say, because they don't want to make a political statement. In a daydream Alex has a hunch something will happen to his little brother.
He directly moves back to his hometown Shepherds Glen in New England. As he arrieves the whole place is shrouded in fog and everybody seems to be gone.
The only person he meets is his own mother - totally haggard and barely accessible. From his little brother and father - no clue. The foreground is the effect of war on Alex psyche. The tense situation in the family, which we see in the teaser-trailer is a point too.
"They say war is hell. But there are worse things than war. War changes. And nobody home can understand that. They never understand me. They say you can't go home anymore. They are wrong. I won't anymore."
But behind the fasade there is more. So Alex will find out whats the matter with his hometown and what happened there while he was in war. While the search on his brother and the truth Silent Hill plays an very important role.
Pic 1 - With split-head monster: Just sick. The monster-design in the first next-gen adventure is extremely outlandish.
Pic 2 - With nurses: Made victims, Alex has had a military-education and know how to answer back. To that effect, the battlesystem is advanced.
Pic 3 - Fakten:
> From the producers of Da Vinci Code
> Also comes for Xbox360
> OST from Akira Yamaoka
> Advanced battlesystem with grips, offensive and defensive actions
> Better AI for enemies

> Click for image <Split horror is half as bad.Alex Shepherd won't be entirely alone in the streets of Shepherd Glen and Silent Hill. Elle Holloway, an old friend stands by his side - giving potential for various developments. Elle is worried about Alex and often trys to cheer him up in his bad situation. At this time it isn't cleared if Elle is controlled by CPU or a playable character, The Collective say she will play a superior role in the game. Whether that as a figure per direct acts, or as a formative element to Alex is pure speculation at this time.
Creepy by Next-Gen power.
Also in Silent Hill V all places have their own hellish otherworld version. The difference between the PS2 games is that the change between the worlds won't be on a special place. The change to the parallel world will be in real-time. Near by the walls are melting and show us a creepy version. The primal fear stands in the foreground - the fear for the dark. The delevoper will adopt light and shadow to leave the player in suspense, guessing what the area looks like and which creature will come out from the dark next.
Pic 1 - Nurse and little brother: Alex has a daydream about something happening to his brother.
Pic 2 - Straightjacket monster:Totally comfortable. The search for his little brother and the truth leads Alex to his hometown and Silent Hill.
Pic 3 - Thin creature: Totally psycho. Alex wrecked psyche is a mirror of the events and enemys.

> Click for image <Because of Havoc-Engine integration all figures and objects interact realistically with ambience which of course can bring us sometimes unexpected shocking-moments. A classic SH element is the grain-filter which also is implantated in the game and profits from the next-gen power to discomfort the player. Also for the new next-gen trip the developer has new effects of irritation which they are experimenting with at the moment to present much more than the grain-filter. The dynamical change of the ambience should be just one thing to make the feeling of the actual area. The developer has also aimed high for the fog and they definetely want to use the next-gen power for that.
The new "Defends-Ness".
Because Alex is the first SH protagonist who is trained in using weapons, the battle system in SHV should be much more manifold. Many defensive and offensive actions are possible which also interact with the actual weapon. The ambience like tables or chairs can play also a role. Grips are totally new and can be counter from enemys which should be an radical experience. If Alex's military-education's effect on the firearms isn't cleared yet, the enemys have an intensive AI. It isn't easily possible to run away - you can made an side-role to flee but enemies won't wait behind doors - they can change rooms. The reactions for noises and visual charms will be articulate. It is also possible to dupe the enemy when you distract them with light, for example. Moreover, The Collective will make the boss fights to an dilly special adventure. We can also be prepared for interesting riddles. In this way The Collective has experience in this field with the game The Da Vinci Code.
Pic 1 - Attic 1: Drastic Homeland. When Alex comes home nothing is like before.
Pic 2 - Attic 2: Continual distress. As we know from the other SH games weapons are mostly rustic.
Pic 3 - Alex at the machine: Headnuts guaranteed. Hard riddles can't fail in SHV.

Aside from Easy.
The stress on The Collective shoulders being the first American developer-studio in the history of the series is great. It's not only about bringing the SH series to the new console generation but to advance the series with that step. We can note it The Collective knows his accountability. If that is enough to assure the mostly prejudiced fans is only hope, but the plans for the next-gen excursion of the cult-horror-series sounds very good.
Pic 1 - Alex in red: Hell on earth. The first time in the series the world changes in real time.
Pic 2 - The nurse: Clever as ever. The enemys are much smarter than before and follow Alex to other rooms.
Pic 3 - The nurse 2: Old Mates. The demonical nurses fans know from the other SH games.
