So, while my Resident Evil conversation is one hot topic, i wondered if anyone has played Silent Hill? It's another amazing genre of survivor horror like Resident Evil, but with a twist.
It's TERRIFYING.
I wanted to know peoples opinions on Silent Hill, where they pooped themselves, and to talk about the upcomming Silent Hill 4: The Room, which i've watched the trailer of and frankly looks so horrifying, disturbing and creepy i had nightmares the night after i watched the trailer. Gawd daymn!
Also, the upcomming movie Silent Hill is in full throttle. Oooh!!

So, theories, questions, reviews, etc?

Not sure if this will work, but that's the offical SH4 trailer, and it's scary as hell. Make sure your speakers are on.

tried to play it but i found it kinda boring ,sorry , but what about "alone in the dark"?? that was creepy

I love Silent Hill's darker, more disturbing take on the genre. The first version on PSone was simply terrifying in parts. Where Resi makes you jump here and there, Silent Hill has you continually feeling isolated and dreading what lies beyond in the dark, or that awful ever present fog.

The second Silent Hill, on PS2 took everything the first did well, and cranked it up a few hundred notches. The interiors were amazing, the characters scarily real, and at times, the grisly underlying horror went far further than any video game I've ever seen.

Ironically, I haven't had the time to play the third. I've got a game traffic jam building, and Silent Hill 3 will have to wait for the dark nights of the Autumn. I always play the game in the dark, anyway. wink2.gif

It is something you have to really get into. There are no BOO scares, it's just the feeling of isolation and the disturbing underlying plot. Coupled with the gruseome scenes and amazingly creepy music. I suggest trying the second one on PS2. It takes about 10 mins to really start, and after that i was hooked. But, it isn't for everyone. original.gif

Mmm, Maria.
Yeah, silent hill 1 was amazing because at the time the graphics and everything were top notch, but compared to the second one it's almost dull now.
The third game, however, was a little lacking. The graphics were suped of course, and the stroy follows the plot of the first game which was kind of a let down. The main character is a bratty teen girl which kind of takes away from the feeling, but it's the most disturbing for sure, just not as scary as the second one. I say try it for sure, but theres alot more BOO scares and things in it.

My personal favourite points are when you're in the washrooms, and the world has alternated to the dark side or whatever. The washroom is black, except for your flashlight. All the stalls are locked. The floor is rusted and the walls are twisted steal. You knock on the first stall, nothing. Second, nothing. Third... something on the otherside knocks back. You decide to leave but when you near the door, there's a creaking sound... the third stall has opened. Deciding to investigate the stall you find nothing there but blood, tons of blood, and a severed mannequin head...
Little parts like that are just the key points!!

I agree, Burnside. thumbsup.gif One of the favourite tricks of the Silent Hill producers is to add little moments of genuine horror. Like the indoor cemetary, or the guy sat in front of the TV, with his brains spread across the screen. Or nasty distant sounds, or a sudden swell of music. These moments have no bearing in gameplay, but they unsettle the player.
odinsgrl
The Silent Hill series, is my all time fave. (sorry RE, but....)

I loved #1 it scared the (beep) out of me, and the puzzles were also just as much fun as the scares.

Silent Hill 2, now that game rubbed my nerves raw. Especially the prison area. It was quite honestly the scarest game I ever played, and the most ingaging.

#3- geez, I don't know what to say. I really, really disliked it. I played it for about an hour, and it just didn't do it for me. I don't know why.

#4-The Room- looks absolutely awesome! I downloaded the 10min trailer from Gamespot, and I cannot wait to play!

I also found out that there is a movie in the works, due out in 2005. I just hope they get it right. If they don't I will be SOOOOOO upset. I hope they get the right director, who knows how to do grainy, almost old movie film kind of flicks. Be cause without that kind of enviroment, I think the whole world of Silent Hill would be lost.

If you like those parts in SH2, you'll love them in Sh3.
Another cool part is when you're in the mannequin warehouse, and you walk down an isle fulled with mannequin bodies without heads or legs. At the end is a single mannequin. Nothign special about it. Just, real creepy. You turn back, go down the next isle. Suddenyl theres a blood-curdling SCREAM and a bang. You run back to the other isle to find blood splattered everywhere and the mannequins head lopped off. hehe!

*shurgs* silent hill 3 was the only one that got much of a rise out of me. the first two were good games, don't get me wrong, they just weren't scary. 1 was just cool, 2 had it's moments of creepiness, and parts of 3 just unsettled me, which was cool. i make my friend mark play silent hill 2 whenever i can because he has a real fear of being chased, and what with pyramid head and all. heh, he panics grin2.gif

silent hill 4 though...now THAT looks scary and freakishly cool.

I know what you mean about SH3. You really had to understand the storyline of the first game to get into it. And it seems like there's just levels instead of being able to actually explore anywhere.

Yeah the movie, i'm worried about it. Here's the only info i know of:

September 18, 2003 - Konami announced today Silent Hill is going to be a movie. Everyone wants to be in the movies, but perhaps making a movie of this nature might just be too damn scary. In which case, we're in.

Prolific movie-maker Samuel Hadida will produce the film, while David Films will produce the feature film adaptation. Hadida's credits include True Romance, Spider, and Brotherhood of the Wolf. Christophe Gans, who directed Crying Freeman and Brotherhood of the Wolf, will direct.
"Silent Hill is a groundbreaking game with an atmosphere that has mesmerized millions of gamers all over the world - it is scary and clever," said Christophe Gans. "I am very proud to be associated with this game."

Konami Corporation will work closely with Gan's production team, overseeing the script development, participating in monster, creature and character designs, and contribute to the film's soundtrack composition.

"The success of the Silent Hill series is based on a perfect blend of suspense, plot twists and captivating characters," said Geoff Mulligan, chief operating officer of Konami of America, Inc. "We are confident that Samuel Hadida and his talented team will capture and create an unforgettable movie-going experience."

Best Silent Hill site on the web, right here. Everything you need to know. i love this site.

chico, man, SH4, is where it's at. I don't think anyone will be able to play that and not feel genuine terror. It is my opinion SH3 was rushed out to please the crowds while they were working on SH4.
odinsgrl
Well, as long as they don't put a bunch of teenagers going to Silent Hill, with big guns and lots of explosions, (please, please, please, don't make another House of the Dead!) I might be okay with it. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. thumbsup.gif
chico del nacho
the silent movie will, unfortunately, probably be like this:

"THE HOUSE ON SILENT HILL OF THE DEAD!!!"

terror rolleyes.gif
BurnSide
I don't think so. Apparently Konami are working very closely with the director/producers of the movie, unlike capcom with Resident Evil. Especialy with monster design, sounds, storyline etc. I think it'll be like James story in SH2.

Well, praying anyway.
chico del nacho
man, if they do do it right, i'm gonna be so happy. it'll be so damn good.
BurnSide
Problem is, all movies are these days is action action action, especially when game-to-movies are concerned. Silent Hill isn't an action game. As long as they make it horror, it'll work.
chico del nacho
man, even with horror, it's still all action action action these days. it's why they almost never put out scary movies anymore. they try to stuff so much into them.

one thing good with horror movies, that is almost entirely lost, is the mantra "it isn't what you see, it's what you DON'T see." people will often imagine truly horrible things when given the right prodding.
BurnSide
Exactly! That's what i love about Silent Hill, it makes you use your own imagination and scare yourself!!

That's what the Resident Evil team realised too. The first time round, dogs jumped out of the windows scaring you with a BOO effect.
Then they remade the game. Going down that hallway, the window shatters slightly as you walk past it, like something slammed into it.. but nothing else happens. It's what DOESN'T happen that scares you.
odinsgrl
That's what I'm hoping for. Some gore, but more of just pure creepiness. The idea of, what the hell is going on in this town? Random mentions of the things going on in the town, from newspapers and notes, (like in the game). I guess I would say, the film making would have to kind of be like "Seven". Dark.
There was a movie out, not too long ago, based on a Dean R. Koontz novel, "Phantoms", that someone had told me, reminded them of Silent Hill. The beginning of the movie was ok, but as it progressed it just got worse and worse.

And I agree Burnside, almost all of the game-to movie, movies out there seem to think it takes alot of action, to pull the fans in. But all we want, is "the game" put to film. If they make it right, it won't need much action, the terror should be enough to pull the people in.
BurnSide
Silent Hill is actually based on two, as far as i can tell, movies already.

Rosemary's Baby, and Jacobs Ladder. Especially Jacobs Ladder. It's a very creepy movie wher ethe world around a world war 2 veteran keeps distorting and he sees strange monsters. he also has flashbacks of the war where he's in an alternate world full of bodies, gore, rusted metal fences and barbed wire, etc etc. If it's anything like Jacobs Ladder, it's going to be good.
odinsgrl
Dang you Burnside!!! w00t.gif

I saw that movie (Jacob's Ladder) when I was young and impressionable! It scared the frikin crap outta me! Not so much the story, of the film, but the imagery stuck in my nightmares for years!
BurnSide
That's the one. Think about it, you can definately see where Konami got some ideas eh.
odinsgrl
It was more prevelent in Game 2, I think.

The noises in the game really got to me too. The prison. Uggggh. I HATED going down that long hallway! A friend of mine, gave me a copy of the Silent Hill 2, soundtrack, with the music and the ambient noise. Don't listen to THAT before you go to bed.
odinsgrl
And I've been having a little argument with my friends bout one of the endings in #2. Did James cheat on his wife when she was in the hospital at all?
I don't know why, but I got that impression.

And if he did....well, he deserved to be there. (hehe)
BurnSide
Wow, how did that come up?
I have never seen any evidence throughout the whole game that he ever cheated on his wife while she was in the hospital. James was very faithful, just got more and more misserable with her. He killed her and blocked it from memory. I definately don't think James ever cheated on her.
odinsgrl
I guess it was from Maria, that I got that impression. A woman that looked like his wife, but was a little more, "ahem" outgoing?, I guess I should say. I thought maybe she was the "guilt" that he had hidden, and she came into Silent Hill, to remind him of that. I don't know, I come up with some pretty crazy stuff in my head sometimes.
BurnSide
Maria never came to Silent Hill.

When you play the special edition of Silent Hill 2, there is a sub story called 'Born from a Wish' in which you play as Maria from her BIRTH to the second she meets James, which is about 15 minutes.

James created Maria.
Well, technically, Silent Hill created Maria from James memories of Mary to test James. She looks exactly like Mary, she's just everything James wanted Mary to be. Sexy, outgoing, fun etc. She's also very ill, and dies several times in the Jame to further punish James for his deeds.
odinsgrl
OOOOhhhhh. well, that makes sense.

More sense than what I had thought.

Try to settle this argument- (hehe, another one of my friends and I)

I believe that Silent Hill is the place you go, when you have something that is weighing so heavy on you, from guilt. My friend says that isn't true because the first game had nothing about that.

Now I know that the two games were intentionaly done with different story lines. So, as to not replay itself, in each new game.
BurnSide
Well, indeed as we do see in Sielnt Hill 2 people are drawn there to face their inner demons.

James sees demons created by his inner guilt in which he has to overcome. These demons reflect his soul and what he had done.
Eddy sees people laughing at him and bullying him, his inner demons. Which is why he goes beserk at the end and tries to shoot James. James is just another man making fun of Eddy.
Angela was raped by her father. She is her inner demon, as we see in the scene where James fights the demon in the labrynth, which Angela calls Daddy. She is also fighting her inner guilt at killing her own father.
These people were all drawn to Silent Hill by the powers that be to stand trial for their crimes.
Of course there is also Laura. She is in Silent Hill looking for Mary, but sees it as an empty, deserted town. Laura is a child, she has no inner demons to face.

The thing is with the first one is that Silent Hill changed to fit the mind of Alessa, who was burned and tortured by her mother and the cult to get the power out of her that she was birthed with. This cult and the ritual to summon the dark god Samael changed the town. It gave the town life. Harry was not fighting his inner demons, he was fighting ALessas demons. Because of the power of Alessa, her mind was manifest by the town which created demons and hideous scenes of violence and delapidated buildings, the insides of Alessas tortured soul.

And of course, in Silent Hill 3, the main character IS Alessa.

Does this make sense? It's VERy hard to explain.
chico del nacho
jacob's ladder was actually about a vietnam vet. i just saw it for the first time last week. wicked movie.

and ya know, i never realized it till now, but that movie and silent hill do have a similar trend...

Yeah man, Silent Hill is as deep as it gets. Nothing is really explained, you have to speculate based on the information you get in the game. That's the main reason i loved the games so much.
Shakezulah
i love silent hill. in a way i like it better than resident evil because of the terror it puts in me.also i love the way it makes you think about everything and its psychological fear it generates. i cringe at the thought of playing them alone at night. i think the first silent hill is the best one. 2 is ok. i didnt like the bosses in it. 3 was pretty good. beat it in 7 hours tho. its really short. ive heard very little on SH4. i know that it goes into first person mode in the apartment and that theres a portal in your bathroom that takes you into the dark side of silent hill. from what ive seen, it looks scary as hell. i havent heard anything on the movie except for the fact that there will be one sometime.
BurnSide
Yeah, Silent Hill 4 is definately different.
It's Henry Townshead, a regular Joe living in an apartment in a city that isn't SIlent Hill. One day he finds he is trapped in his apartment, and can't get out. He's not the only one, his neighbour Eileen is also trapped. Mysteriously portals appear in the apartment. Going through leads you to different parts of Silent Hill...

The enemies look scary as hell. There's 'victims' in this one.
Victim one: A dead body that floats towards you and attacks.
Victim two: A body that scrambles along the floor towards you face down.
Victim three: An apparition with two babies faces and long arms it uses to run towards you, screaming!!

It seems more melee-based. Weapons include switch knifes, poles, axes, planks, basically anything you can get your hands on. They break too, so you always have to be on the lookout for weapons.
Falco Rex
I've only ever played Silent Hill 1, but it scared the hell out of me, which isn't easy to do. Right from the beginning where the kids stab you in the alley, I knew I was in for a completely different kind of video game..
I actually have Silent Hill 2 and 3, I've just never got to play them yet. Now that my boy can move around using anything that involves long cords is out of the question. PS2s' are too damn expensive to end up in pieces on the floor..*Sigh*..someday...
BurnSide
Daymn!
It makes for great late-night play. So sometime if you have a long night to spare and aren't tired, plug it in, you'll be in for a rough ride.
Shakezulah
can someone explain to me the different endings in silent hill 2? ive only gotten one and i think it was good. but the startegy guide doesnt explain them at all.
BurnSide
Sure man! (You're gonna start thinking i'm the nerdiest guy ever. I really aren't, i just have a good memory and stuff when it comes to games!)

Silent Hill 2 endings.

The LEAVE ending. (BEST)
How to get it:
Stay healthy in the game. Don't wait around for Maria to follow, don't listen to her, don't pay attention to her. Don't rush to save her. Listen to the headphones in the hotel. Check Mary's picture and letter several times in the game. Listen to Mary's speech in the long hallway at the end. Kill Maria at end of game. The game will realise James cares to find Mary at all costs, and doesn't care for Maria she is only holding him back.
Ending:
James kills Maria and frees himself of his guilt. He has a flashback of Mary telling him to move on with his life, that she will always love him but he should forget her. James leaves Silent Hill with Laura, ready to start his life without Mary, without guilt or sadness.

The MARIA ending.
How to get it:
Stay healthy in the game. Stay close to Maria at all times and don't let her get hit by monsters. Save her as fast as you can. Listen to what she says and spend alot of time with her. Don't check Marys letter much, or her photo. Don't listen to the headphones in the hotel and don't listen to Mary's speech in the long hallway. Kill the Mary-demon at the end of the game. The game will realise that James cares more for Maria than he does for Mary.
Ending:
James kills the demon Mary at the end of the game. He realises what he did was right, Mary deserved to die for what she had done to him, and it was time to move on with his life. He turns his back on his guilt with Mary, and decides to start a new life with Maria. They leave Silent Hill together. But Maria starts coughing as they leave town. She is very sick. James is now cursed by SIlent Hill to watch the person he loves die over and over and over again for the rest of his life.

The IN WATER Ending. (WORST)
How to get it:
Don't heal yourself when you get hurt. Run around recklessly and at 50% health for most of the game. Do not pay attention to Mary, let her get hurt and don't stay close to her. Check Mary's picture and letter alot, and also check ANGELAS KNIFE alot too. The game will realise that James is running around in a suicidal way and doesn't care to live.
Ending:
James is in his car. Everything that happened was in his head. The body of his beloved wife Mary is beside him. Together they crash into the ocean. James drowns, he doesn't care to live without Mary by his side.

The RESSURECTION Ending: (I've never got this ending before)
How to get it:
Collect several cerimonial items throughout the game (second playthrough only). Also collect the 'book of the cult' or something like that. At the end of the game kill the evil Maria. The game will notice that you have collected all the cult items and the cult books. It will realise James has joined the Cult of Samael from the first game and plans to use the cult' power to ressurect Mary from the dead.
Ending:
He gets back in the boat and heads to the middle of the lake, to a small island. There he draws the Mark of Samael and ressurects Mary from the dead so he can be with her again.

The DOG Ending: (Joke ending)
How to get it:
There is a secret key hidden in the town of Silent Hill in someones front garden. It is in a dog house. Collect this key and use it on the locked door beside the room with the videotape in the Hotel.
Ending:
James enters the room to find a dog working the controls of Silent Hill. The dog jumps down and gives James a hearty lick!

The UFO Ending: (Joke Ending)
How to get it:
I have No clue. It's only available on the Xbox/PC version of Silent Hill 2.
Ending:
The Aliens are back from the first game! They hover over Silent Hill. Suddenly Harry, the hero from the first game, jumps down from nowhere and engages James in a fist fight to the death. The Aliens land, ZAP Harry and james and take them into their spaceship and away they go...
Shakezulah
thanx burnside. i have another question. you know the piano puzzle in the first game in the school? how do you figure that out with the writing on the chalkboard. ive never done it on my own, just from online guides. do you understand it?
BurnSide
Yeah. The blood on the keys represented the birds in the poem. The first key is given to you. After that you have to read the words carefully, see who came next and where. If it says 'the *** came next, flying higher than the rest but behind the *' then you know that *** was on a black key above the white keys, but behind the first bird because it said he came 'next' and also behind the * bird because it says he was behind it.
i'm afraid i can't give you a better explanation than that because it's been a very long time since i've played it.
Shakezulah
ok. its still a little confusing but thanks
BurnSide
It is really hard to explain, especially since I haven't played it in so damn long lol. I do remember working for ages on that puzzle too.

My favorite game in the world is Silent Hill 2. I love the depth of the story, and just the feel of the entire thing. Oddly enough games don't really scare me, but I still love the horror genre. I bought SH1 awhile back, and was impressed that even with the lower end graphics. The stories are also just really good, and thats not mentioning the little things everyone talks about that make the game really sorta eerie. I'm buying a PS2 this summer just so I can play SH3 wub.gif And I can't wait for 4, it looks absolutly riveting. devil.gif
BurnSide
What do you currently have Silent Hill 2 on?
I know 3 is out for PC.
Shakezulah
when u first played SH1, and in the beginning when u go in the alley and the childrem thing start killing you and you died, did u know that was supposta happen? i didnt know that when i played it for the first time and i got really angry that they didnt give me any weapons to kill them and i threw my controler in a fit of rage and turned the game off. i get a little too worked up about video games when i die or fail.
BurnSide
hahahahah!!!!

no i had no clue that was supposed to happen, but considering i ran all over that area looking for a way out and couldn't, i decided to see what happened. sure enough Harry woke up in the cafe.

boy that part was scary tho eh. walking alot, it suddenly gets dark, theres a hospital gurney and blood, a wheelchair creeking... the walls turn to rusted steel mesh fencing... random lumps of flesh... a body, and then little demon children things stabbing me!
Shakezulah
dont forget the sirens!
BurnSide
yeah, those damned world war 2 sirens. i have a theory for everything in the game except why harry hears world war 2 sirens when the world shifts into the alternate. weird. you can hear them in sh2 as well, but not in 3.
