Why is it that humans like music? It's not just humans either, all mammals and most birds have music appreciation as well. What purpose does it serve? In the wild the only music we could make is by banging rocks on things, so why is it that we like it. Shouldn't it just be noise and not melodic? Most non-human animals have no way of making music so why do they like music as well?

This may sound strange, but I sing a lot when I'm at home. You know, just humming a tune or singing a song to no one in particular. Anyway, whenever I sing my cat's always come to listen, & they start meowing. Who says animals don't appreiate music! laugh.gif laugh.gif thumbsup.gif

My dog likes Vivaldi, Mozart and strangely enough Darth Vader's theme from Star Wars. grin2.gif

The same question crossed my mind too from time to time.
My dog, for example, likes the music my sister plays at the piano. Strangly enough, he dislike it when me or my sister listen to some metal music or other modern musics, even though the volume is much lower than the volume of the piano.

When I played the guitar, my dog would come and sit or lay next to me.
When me and my family sing holydays songs, for example in Hannukah, the dog is very excited and cheerfull, and wag his tail alot.

It's just a weird thing to evolve. What purpose does it serve? We evolved hands to use tools. We evolved forward facing eyes to be able to focus on things better, at a loss of peripheral vision. We evolved feet suited for bipedalism. These are all obvious with obvious answers, but music has no concieveable purpose. Why?

That's not an evolutionary purpose, we couldn't have evolved it for that. And what about animals like parrots. They couldn't make any music naturally so why do they like it? And yes, parrots do like it. Alex the Grey Parrot has even voiced that he likes rap the best.
