I think that it is growing, counting that the number of sightings is increasing. I have wrote an article, not done, about the sighting of an out of place big cat here in my state. It is odd, though. I never thought that "panthers" could live out here....It is strange because of the way my aunt described it...it was tons bigger then a panther. At least 3-3 1/2 feet at the shoulder. Ok not much bigger, yet still.

Ok, I'm new, don't get mad at me....*cry*

Welcome BigCat!!!!! thumbsup.gif

Mountain lions are definately growing, perhaps not in size, but certainly in population. It all started with some enviromentalist whacko nutsos that were worried the big guys couldn't copulate and breed fast enough to ward off extinction. Now they are so prevalent, and bold, they attack people boldly and occasionally. I think the Governator of Calif should pass an Executive Order and offer bounties on about most of the mountain lions. Kill them back almost to the point of extinction...that's what I think. wink2.gif

what's strange is that australia has had sightings of large cats.... most of them being black.. theory goes that when the american sailors used to come into port (which they still do from time to time) they had panthers as mascots... some of these escaped and hey presto... we have big black cats.. some people also think that it is a freakishly large feral cat (and these feral cats get pretty blo*dy huge.... but i've also seen a domestic cat that would be larger than a corgi) we cant be certain until the creature is seen again, in more detail.. there are reports that it could be a small pocket of thylacine (tasmanian tiger) that survived, but that is also unfounded

p.s australia has no native cats, rabbits or foxes, as they were all brought over when the country became colonised...

I am pretty sure that The US Navy does not let the Sailors have contraband such as panthers on board.

That being said, In North Central Texas and East Texas we have panthers as well.
A lot of people thought it would be cool to have a big cat as a pet. I knew a girl once who had a leapard cub. Cute as can be. But then they get big and they aren't cute anymore and so people let them go in the wild. Wahlla...panthers in the night........ w00t.gif

I thought this may be of interest.
There has been a species of cat found here in Scotland which shows traits of both wild and domestic cats. Known as the Kellas cat, the species has often been seen hunting in pairs (not usually a trait found in domestic cats). Unfortunately Kellas cats are often victim to human fear and misunderstanding. They have been so demonised many have been trapped and shot ( some of these killed cruelly by using snare traps ). I think the main reason for this is that they are often blamed for killing sheep and domestic cats. The Kellas cat measures on average 42 inches in length from head to tail. I think it is unlikely that a cat this size would attack a sheep but that's just my opinion. The people from the village of Kellas seem to think differently. Anyways, hopefully this info will be of some interest and maybe add another dimension to the discussion. original.gif

I think it's pretty much the same as before. I'm taking into account that we have a more open society now where people are more willing to report their sightings and a much larger media to report it to..
well-grounded
I'd agree with Falco Rex. I don't really think that its changed. I just think that more people are reporting it.

Had a nice reply to this and the site went wonky and did "Page cannot be displayed" when I hit reply -.-

Anyways, that post right there further entrenches my view that humanity is very arrogant.

Instead of educating people on what to do while in a preditory animal's territory, or while during a time when the chances for attack is high, we just kill off the animal into oblivian.

Ya know.. because it's thier fault. Nevermind the fact that most of the forest fires (I *know* someone will bring in that defence) are caused by some idiot who will leave a camp fire unattended, or flick a still lit cig out into the woods during a drought or moderate dry season. Poof, forest fire. Oh and also, nevermind the fact that we keep encrouching in wildlife areas that are territories to these animals. I guess it's thier fault for attacking people because they ignored the eviction notice we gave them.

But no, "Just shoot them to hell and back!" is our answer for everything. And I'm some "whacko nutso" because I feel that we could just educate people. Also feel that instead of shooting the animals for an attack, just tranq and rehab the creature if it's emansipated if needed and either place it in a shelter, or place it back in the wild far away from humanity in an area that can support it.

Out of place big cats??? LOL its obviously because of the depletion of forests and natural resources. As we expand civilization we will become more and more faced with natural predators. In parts of the russian tiga there are many man eating lions and such because the rate at which the land is logged and deforested is so immense because of the temptation of short term profit. They have no other choice but to interact with humans, as their sources for food and habitats diminish.
Simple science.

Where i live in the northeas united states, there is always some stories about mountain lions or panthers, attacking people. Sometimes even killing them, but its nothing really strange. It's the same as people who live in florida, a lot are killed by alligators and snakes each year.
