I remember reading the story of the Roanoke Colony, when I was a kid. I remember it creeped me out. All those people gone.
And my question here is, have they ever found out what happened to all the people? Is it still consitered a mystery? Did they find evidence of a native attack? Or is it still consitered one of the strangest group disappearances in U.S. history?
Are there any more cases of whole towns disapearing without a trace? (not the town itself, just the people). Not just in U.S., but all over the world.
Its odd, ghosts don't scare me. "Monsters", don't scare me. But the thought of whole towns going, and maybe walking into a town like that...finding everything the way it should be, minus the people....buuurrr, gives me the willies.

April 26. Sir Walter Raleigh sends out three ships with women as well as men, with promises of land grants to whomever establishes a colony on the Chesapeake Bay. The expedition is headed by the flagship Lion and commanded by John White, an artist. The colonists make landfall at Roanoke instead of the shores of Chesapeake Bay, and on August 27, White sails back to England. Upon his arrival there on October 16, he learns that war has broken out between England and Spain. In 1587, a colony of 114 people settled on Roanake Island. This was one of the first attempts to colonize in the new world. They were led by John White. Times were tough and they needed supplies. John went back to England for more supplies. He was unable to return until 3 years later. When he did arrive back, he couldn't find a trace of the colony. No people, living or dead, could be found. All personal belongings were left as if the people simply disappeared into thin air. His only clue was a carving on a tree-'CRO' was all he could decipher. Thinking that the 3 letters may have been an unsuccessful attempt to spell out the word CROATOAN, a nearby island, John sailed to Croatoan to search for his family and fellow Englishmen. No trace could be found. The Lost Colony, English colony in what is now North Carolina that disappeared in 1591; the Croatan Indians in NC claim to be descendants of an American Indian tribe and the colonists who joined and intermarried with them; thus an explanation is given for the physical characteristics and occasional English names of the Croatans. The movie "Stormof the century" hasa inspired me to tell you all about it. I will continue doing research about this lost colony and keep you all informed

If I recall correctly, DNA testing about a decade ago established that at least a sizeable amount of the colony seems to have gone native. Considering how many colonies disappeared during this time, it's not surprising that they chose too. Englishmen were not ideally suited to the New World. Nothing too mysterious here. Simply a colony that, in the three years that it had no contact with the motherland, descended into ruin till the only choice the survivors had was to go live with the natives.

I remember reading about an eskimo village where everyone disappeared, three hunters left the town togo hunting and some time later they came back and everyone was gone, I think the dogs were gone too, can't remember, but the dogsleds were still there. talk about creepy, it was in Alaska, it's one thing on normal land with all sorts of colors, but it's worse when everything is white with snow.

Bah. I've heard this story in england with a scotish village dissapearing. I heard it with an Australian Village, i've heard it with canadians and with americans.
Who knows what the original story was, but i can say with confidence that the story is just a duplicate of another story from another place, and that story is a dup. and the one before then, etc etc etc.
Everyone wants their own urban myth, weather it's a ghost hitch hiker or a dissapearing town.

No matter what the truth is, it's still a creepy story, like it or not, Burnside.
