This today from digitalspy.co.uk:
A prequel movie to The Lord of the Rings is one step closer to reality, MRIB reports today.
Film studio New Line have been unable to commence pre-production on The Hobbit because rival studio MGM currently holds the distribution rights to the book.
MGM is currently up for sale and Time Warner - owners of New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures - is the most likely candidate to buy the company.
Such a deal would unite all parties involved with The Hobbit and plans for the adaptation would be able to get underway.
The website adds that Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is still "very keen" to head up the project.
Fingers crossed

That would be great. They definately have a built in fan base that would guarantee them good sales too.
I like hobbits...they are nice and happy little people, with big feet...
You know what they say about big feet right?

I'd love to see this! The book was so good, i wanna see how they'd pull off Smaug and the Trolls and yay for Gollum making a return to cinema.
As long as they can get ALL the same actors (Bilbo, Gandalf, Gollum, Elrond pretty much all they need really) and locations (Shire, Rivendell) then it'll be a massive hit.

Rumour has it that Elijah Wood was asked during the making of LotR that if they ever did the Hobbit would he play Biblo. Which is kinda stupid since Biblo did not age between the Hobbit and LotR due to the ring so would still look like Ian Holm, plus Ian Holm was in the intro shot of the Hobbit scene in FoTR. Plus, everyone assoccaites Wood with Frodo... its stupid.
Oh well, despite that the movie will be good, possibly better than LotR since the Hobbit's pace never slows down and they just go from action to action. Also since its only a few hundred pages long a lot of it wont be cut out.

Wow, if they cast Wood for bilbo that would be REALLY stupid. Holm and Wood don't look a thing like each other.

Don't worry fellas, I've seen the trailer, and Ian Holm plays there as Bilbo, and indeed it is directed by Peter Jackson.

Although I agree that Ian Holm would make the ideal Bilbo in The Hobbit, the trailor you saw was probably a fake,
this also from Digitalspy.co.uk:
A fake movie trailer for Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit has made its way onto the internet.
The fantasy two-minute clip - available here - was created by 26-year-old film studies student Steve Latham, using clips from The Fellowship of the Ring and 1981 movie Dragonslayer.
The trailer, which has gained acclaim from many fans of the books, gives a release date of December 19, 2006.
Production on the movie - should it go ahead at all - will not be able to begin until director Peter Jackson has finished shooting a remake of King Kong. Meanwhile, film studio New Line is still in negotiations with MGM to acquire the distribution rights to the book.

Technilcally though, since the Hobbit was written first, shouldn't it be called the original and LotR the sequal?

Jul 21 2004, 01:47 AM
Yeah, but LOTR's was made into a film first, so that's how many people will refer to it...........if there is a movie, I hope Jackson does direct and the same actors will do the parts because then it won't seem right.
Then people will finally get the whole story.

technically, the hobbit was just a prologue to the LoTR series.
In fact, portions of the fellowship we're written prior to the Hobbit.
If you want to start from the beginning.. read The Silmarillion.

Are you sure,

the Hobbit was written for his kids when they were 10 or something, he didn't even think of publishing until a friend mentioned. At the time of writting the Hobbit, LotR wasn't even in his thoughts, thats why the rings isn't that major to the story in Hobbit, its just something Biblo got to make him a successful Burgular like he was suppost to be.

I just hope that they don't leave out the part where the Group goes to Beorn's place. When they made the cartoon of the Hobbit...years and years ago...that was like..the ONLY part they left out in the ENTIRE book!!!! makes me mad.

SO yeah...i just hope they include
that part...that would be awesome. Who else has seen the cartoon version? not the new digitally restored one, but the original one?

Me, I imported it and the cartoon Return of the King from the States around the same time as very DBZ DVD Amazon was selling. It was..... okay for a child, but for for someone who was read The Hobbit by his parents since he was two before reading it twice a year for himself since the age of seven... it was apawling.
I never did bother to watch the cartoon of Return of the King.

Yeah...don't even bother watching the rest of the series...i have them all and it sucks. I babysit a lot...so the kids always pop in the movies. Though for me, i watched The Hobbit on the cartoon before i read the book...but after reading it, it is disappointing. Espically the re-digitalized version...they totally screwed up with the sound.

The movie should be good, and well i don't think Jacko has let us down on one film yet, hopefully it comes out within the next two years or so, but the hobbit book was a great read.
Only thing will he do it over say two or three films or over one, as well i feel if it was just one film it would be slightly rushed lots of important events etc.

Yes, as a matter of fact it is. MGM has announced they're going to be doing the movie in part with New Line. No word yet if Peter Jackson will direct or if the LotR cast will return though.

But! How could the cast come back? It ws before all that..completely seperate. So how could they come back? I hope they make it in the same way. I loved the journey part of it. But not the part he got eaten by a tree. well not eaten but sucked in then pulled out..That was in it right or am I remembering wrong?

Sep 15 2006, 12:47 PM
It's not completely seperate, there are still many of the same characters. Gandalf, Gollum, Bilbo, Elrond for example. If the Hobbit is going to be done, they need to have the same actors playing these roles as in LotR, otherwise it wont fit.
