well this creature is roaming the batimore area. nobody knows what it is and it doesn't seem to be afraid of humans and domestic pets don't seem to be bothered by it eather. it kind of resembles a hyena but has obvious differnces. and is far from native to the us. maybe someone here can take a crack at it? thumbsup.gif
druidpagen
btw way the actual footage can be seen on www.thewbalchannel.com/news/3545312/detail.html

topic hyote as keyword

Edit:fixed link
Panthera leo atrox
I suspect that it is sick, and from a known, native species. wink2.gif
druidpagen
i thought that as well but the posture isn't like a dogs and look at the ears. ever seen a dog with ears like that or a toughed tail? also to date no others animals(including dogs) have contacted anything from it. maybe we'll never know.... blink.gif
Panthera leo atrox
Looks like it could be a doggie to me, especially if it's mangy and sick. Not a pretty sight. sad.gif
greychupa
Could be a Chinese crested. Or a hyena, I'm almost convinced its a hyena !!
TheOracle
If it isn't afraid of people or other animals then why don't they just trap the bloody thing ? huh.gif
greychupa

doomgirl
it looks like a hyena to me
Erikl
Looks kinda like a sick wild boar huh.gif .... I don't think it's a canine at all (or an Hyena... seen an Hyena near my house once and it doesn't look like the creature in the picture at all).
Falco Rex
Looks kinda like a dhole to me. How one would get to Maryland is beyond me..
Universal Absurdity
I live about 5 minutes from glyndon, I havent seen the animal, but a co worker has. Apparently he was about 5 feet from it, it sniffed at him then turned and walked away. Very strange animal. My friend said even that close, he had no idea at all what this animal was.
Anakim
It kind of looks like a hyena because of that whole main thing going down its back but it doesnt move like one. But it does look like a canine though!
Quirky Aussie
To me it looks like it might be a Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), but again, I don't know what it could be doing in Maryland. Is it mainly nocturnal?
Panthera leo atrox
Here's a comparison I've made using a photograph I took of a spotted hyena. To me the proportions of the back/hind legs look different in the two.
Panthera leo atrox
And here's a comparison I made using a maned wolf pic I took. Now the ear/leg proportions look different to me.
Hey now!
Kind of looks like one of these guys with really bad mange wink2.gif

Or if it's not that if you look closely it does kinda look like a hairless German Shepherd. And if it was that it would explain why none of the animals in the area found it strange wink2.gif

Somebody should go try to find a picture of a german shepherd with really bad mange. wink2.gif
Panthera leo atrox
Pic of a dog with mange, to get an idea of what the disease looks like

From the looks of it, the animal's fur (what's left of it) is brown/reddish colored, unlike a cape hunting dog.
Hey now!
Fur can have slight color alterations though...and look at the faces the markings and the shape are exactly the same
NirmalaMaya
It does look like he has the mange. Looks like some kind of boar or wild pig mixed with dog..LoL. Very weird! Great thread!

Update.

A Photo of this creature was taken about a year ago in Harford county.
Harford county is about 60-100 miles from glyndon where it was taped days ago.
I'll post a pic when its available. The resemblence was striking. They dont know if it was the same creature or another of its kind.

Does anyone know how long an animal can have mange before its completely hairless? the hair pattern on the photo from a year ago was identical.
SilverCougar
Ok.. first, it looks liek it's got a mane, mange, and a cross between a hyena and a pitbull... =\
Erikl
OK, from the pictures posted by Panthera and Hey, I would say it is indeed a canine (the first picture just looks like a weird looking wild boar).
However, I don't think it's a German Shepered, because it's body structure, and ear lenght, doesn't match to those of a German Shepered.
I think it is a cross between a wolf, a coyote, and a German Shepered.
Or it could be German Shepered which didn't eat for many days and have been abused by it's owners (is ears cut short or eaten etc.).
Panthera leo atrox
Or a mutt.

Here is a distinguishing feature between the creature and a cape hunting dog. The cape hunting dog usually displays a black blaze across its head. The creature has a similar blaze, made of remaining fur, but it is a reddish color. I have yet to see a cape hunting dog that displays this color on any part of its body.

What a weird unfortunate creature...
Does seem to have the posture of a hyena.
But not afraid of humans or harmful to other animals... wacko.gif
Looks like someone did some sick genetic experiment.....
Erikl
Maybe it's a Brown Hyena?

Here are some pictures of Brown Hyena:

Hey now!
the thing is...you don't have random genetic mutations running around, you keep them in the lab. And i doubt it is a hyena because the animals would go balistic if it was but as they said it gets along fine with other animals. Also in the video it said it was eating the cat's food. Hyenas don't eat cat food...They eat meat.

Anyways..that brown hyena is way too small.

But still...isn't the similarities between this guy and the cape hunting dog strange?
cor_raven
it look to me like it was eating grass in the video. dogs do eat grass when there sick i guess it cold be a hyena but how did it get to maryland:huh: tis a puzlle
Panthera leo atrox
I think that a hyena, especially a hungry one, might eat all kinds of things! After all, cats tecnically eat meat (carnavores).

Although a brown hyena looks to be a bit of a better guess than a spotted hyena, the proportions and coloration still seam off.
Universal Absurdity
Ok, the pics of the animal from last year are now online. there are 12 so i'll just post this link

There is also an article, and another tv news report Click Here

JOPPA, Md. -- There may be more than one mystery animal running around Maryland -- there are pictures from a sighting in Harford County.

At the Mathis family's rural home in Joppa, they're used to animals, but not this kind.

"I looked out the window and I saw something drinking out of the water trough," said Lisa Mathis. "It looked like something out of Lord of The Rings."

"I couldn't figure out what it was," Mathis said. "I though it was a dog and then I looked closer and then I got the camera and pulled it in closer just so I could show the rest of the family."

Mathis's sighting occurred about a year ago. They didn't think much of it until last week when home video of a very similar looking beast appeared on 11 News.

"I saw it and immediately thought of this picture that my wife had taken," said Jon Mathis. "(It) looked exactly like the same animal."

On their Harford County land the Mathises have seen all kinds of foxes and other animals running around, but never one like this.

"I'm from New Jersey so I immediately thought it was the Jersey Devil," said Jon Mathis. "In New Jersey folklore, it's a wild beast -- sort of like the abominable snowman."

"My first impression was this was a red fox with sarcoptic mange," said Paul Peditto from the Department of Natural Resources.

With theories running wild, Maryland's Department of Natural Resources says it's very likely a fox, but even they can't be certain.

"We can't discount the possibility that someone had some type of exotic mammal as a pet and released it for whatever reason," said Peditto.

"I'm from New Jersey so I immediately thought it was the Jersey Devil."
- Jon Mathis

But even with maybe more than one so-called hyote running loose, DNR is going to leave the beast or beasts alone for now.

"We would respond if we knew we had a public safety situation developing," said Peditto. "If we had an animal that was acting in a way that would put people in danger, we would respond immediately."

The only way to find out what the animal is would be to trap it, but DNR says it would only do that if the animal were seen as a threat .mystery animal
Panthera leo atrox
Wow. Yet another really ugly dog!
SilverCougar
A dog or canine will eath anything if it's hongry, inclueding cat food.

That and cat food has meat..or meatlike stuff in it.

mostly meatlike stuff... grin2.gif
Dancing_Dumplings
hmmm....it looks like a hyena especially in the 7th pic...but it couldnt he....hyenas are Carnivors. and it looks like in 1 of the pics its eating the grass....hmmmm..... blink.gif i dunno what that thing is lol but it really does look like a hyena.

the 7th pic (below)
VampChilde18
It looks like the unknown do thing that showed up in Washington that i saw on this board a week ago. Some guy got a pic of it with his motion sesative camera.
DarkAnubis
i thought the same thing as anti girl when i saw it....it looks a hell of a lot like a hyena...and i don't think that is something from lord of the rings...honestly people....but it is a scavenger and eating grass doesn't make sense....unless there is no other food source.
wardrich
this is an RP. The first topic can be found HERE

Kind of reminds me of a smaller version of a "Death Dog" from the movie Willow.

Quirky Aussie
I think it looks like either a Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) or a Dhole (Cuon alpinus), but neither of those are native to the North-Eastern US.
wardrich
not to say that they weren't smuggled in though.

Well, I hope it survives all this attention...
If it showed up here in WV...my redneck students would be out looking for it with their guns!

Well dogs and cats eat grass if they have upset stomachs, so purpose this critter is doing the same? thumbsup.gif

those were great, i loved those things. OH and a great movie too, i think its probably a hyea that got loose or abandoned after being kept as an illegal pet.
Fairie
I definitely agree that the shape of the creatures face suggests some sort of hyena, but hyenas do not have tails and are a lot bigger, so that doesn't entirely tally.
So, just to through in another little theory, I sort I'd mention what the creatures stance in this picture reminded me of:

The length of the tail and the stance of the hind legs reminded me of another pic:

The mystery creature also appears to have mange exactly where there would be stripes on a thylacine, bizarre.
Nxt2Hvn
You make a really good point Fairie...

Does resemble the Tazmanian Tiger.
Panthera leo atrox
The Thylacine had a particular trait, seen in many marsupials. The tail sort of looks like it is melting into the legs instead of being as seprate as most other animals, like dogs and cats. I forget what the tecnical term is for this, but it is a distinguishing feature in marsupials. None of these "mystery animals" show this trait.

And yes, hyenas really do have tails.
