I'm really more or less indifferent, depends on who they're playing.
Janiel
yea thats true, i've just always hated them (dunno why)

not only would playoffs decide an undisputed National Champion, but they'd rake in a lot more money than the bowl system does now.

We can't be the only ones that see that, unless there is a HUGE amount of money being passed under the table from these great masterminds that came up with this BCS (you said it best) crap. Which is a real possiblity seeing that some of these decision making individuals have their heads so far up George Washington's back door they seem to forget about the game itself.

Hehehe...platinum seasons tickets for NLL (Sorry snuffs)

Never seen it live, so I'm game.

snuffypuffer
It may well be that there is a lot more money being passed around in the bowl system than we know about. And some of the smaller bowls would be taken out of the mix, if a playoff system was in place. Can't say they're rooting for one to happen.
Falco Rex
I hate the Buffalo Bills. They stole our midget (Flutie) and our Load (Bledsoe)..
snuffypuffer
And you get Tom Brady, that seems to have worked out pretty well tongue.gif
Falco Rex
Yeah, but anyone who's ever belonged to a New England team will tell you..Once you're in, you're never really out. Look at Wade Boggs. Who really remembers him in Tampa? We're like the sports Mafia. You're in for life..
Triniant
.....equals two superbowl victories, I guess third times the charm. Not a big Pats fan, but that Belicheck is one hell of a strategist.

Speaking of him, what about the NFC East? I think it is going to be the toughest conference for the next few years.
snuffypuffer
Yeah, with the Eagles and Cowboys looking to be trading the title back and forth for awhile it's gonna be hard to slip in there. It's gonna be awhile before the Giants get some respect, though.
Triniant
Hey if Kurt Warner can stay healthy and NY implements a system around him like they did in St. Louis, I think they can be dangerous. Then there are the Skins, who always have a load of talent on paper but can never bring it together, that will change under Gibbs.

Snuffypuffer, you're a Steelers fan right? What is going on over there? I like Cowher, but is the GM screwing this thing up or does Bill have some crappy luck lately? Even though your crew is one up on mine in Superbowls.
snuffypuffer
I think Ben Roethlisberger is gonna be a really good quarterback, and Deuce Staley may pan out. I think the Steelers are still a couple steps away, still, though. Cowher just signed a contract extention, which makes the Snuffs very, very happy.
Triniant
I liked Ben last year at Miami (OH), he does have the skills to be great. Duece on the other hand needs to stay healthy, he has already proved that he is capable of being an elite back in this league.
snuffypuffer
It's the staying healthy part that worries me.
Triniant
There is nothing better than a good rivalry, so I truly hope he does stay healthy and Cowher and the Steelers once again find their way to the top of the AFC. How about another Cowboys - Steelers Superbowl?

That would be great, and even better if the Steelers went back to their roots and pummeled the Cowboys, just like tradition dictates tongue.gif
Triniant
That's not part of the tradition I want to include (but we learn from history, right?). Yes I admit defeat in the 70's, and a couple of popular conspiracies with the last SB meeting (you know O'donnell + Larry Brown) but with Ben -vs- Drew, a very possible matchup (rookies), and Cowher -vs- Parcells (very blue collar), I think the Cowboys would have the edge and even things up.
snuffypuffer
Well, I'd hate to break this to you, but Ben will have the better supporting cast, the best receiver in the whole frikkin league Hines Ward, being one of them, plus Plaxico Burress and a healthy Deuce Staley, not to mention the Bus, and a quick defense, I think the Steelers will come out on top. tongue.gif
Triniant
I had something to say, but things have changed since the last time I logged in. Carter is gone and they want to start Testaverde, could be a good thing, but I don't feel that confident. Yes Pittsburgh has great receivers, but don't discount that Doomsday Defense (#1 last year).

What about that whole Eli Manning crap during the draft? I feel that you shouldn't question where you're going to play as a draft pick (especially being the first), be happy you're being picked and playing profesional. I would play or ride the bench waiting for the chance to play for any team. What better way is there to earn a living, doing something you enjoy plus making excellent money (even if it is league minimum).
snuffypuffer
I think it's pretty stupid, the whole thing. The Chargers have a fault here, too, if he wasn't going to play for them, why did they draft him in the first place? I would've just sent him on his way and wished him luck.

I don't know what's going on in Dallas, except Parcells is putting his own guys in and could be hurting more than he helps.

You notice you and I are the only people who ever post in this thread?
Triniant
I agree, make him play on your terms not his or his father's.

I was picking the cowboys to go 10-6 again, but now I have to say 7-9, maybe 8-8, maybe.

Training camp has started and I already see a lot of new developments i.e. Boston out for the season, Ricky Williams retiring, the Carter incident, and whatever else prior to kick-off.

I guess nobody else really knows that much about this great sport or maybe they're just shy.
snuffypuffer
Well, this is a UK based site, so the other football thread steals our spotlight.

In any case, the way things have been going the last few years, you never know what's gonna happen until the season's over, we could be seeing the Browns and Saints in the Super Bowl in a few months.

Really unlikely, but it could happen.

Don't dis americans BA. Some of us are mods.

LOOSER! Comon guy's american footballers are so padded up it's unreal! Soccer is a worldwide sport based on skill, not like the grid iron where you've got to be thick and dumb and life's a box of choc's!.....No contest! ! ! tongue.gif
snuffypuffer
Maybe they're so padded because they knock the holy hell out of each other? None of us are jacking your soccer thread cat.gif
saucy
Everywhere I go and hear people talking about football, I never hear anyone talking about the Broncos. I am a HUGE, HUGE Denver fan, probably beause I was born there. If it's one team that has a shot this year, it's my Broncos! cool.gif

Very true, who knows who it could be ending another year as champion.

Hey Denver looks like they might be pretty good, but it all depends on how their new running back is going to do, oh yeah don't forget a lot rides on Jake the Streaky Snake's performance as well.

IT'S FOOTBALL, AMERICAN FOOTBALL why am I shouting? Okay, so I made a little dig in the title, I haven't gone over to your thread and bashed the game, however.

So there tongue.gif

Denver never seems to have trouble finding a running back, they're always loaded at that position. I agree, a lot depends on how Jake Plummer performs.

How about Carolina? What do you think their chances for repeating last year's success are?
Seraphina
The other day, a friend of mine brought over an NFL game....I decided to borrow it from him and get an idea of what US football is like.

I've since decided that American football is pretty cool, and beats the snot out of our prissie, kick-the-ball-back-and-forth-doing-nothing, version. I've actually being playing it nonstop, so there ya go grin2.gif

I think it's the physicality...there's more hard hitting than football/soccer (obviously) and more strategy than Rugby...not a bad game as it turns out.
Seraphina
*shares a joke with Subby that is just to good to waste*

Now I know TWO things that I can do better than Bill Goldberg laugh.gif

Im sorry sera but you clearly do NOT understand football or rugby.

Especially rugby , all rugby is , is startedgy....as for the physicality theres no contest between rugby and gridiron.

You have admitted to me before youve never been to a football game so i wouldnt expect you to understand that football is all about skill and finesse....never mind the intricate stategies that are employed on the pitch.

simply the reasons that have made it the greatest and by far the biggest sport the planet has ever seen. thumbsup.gif
Subtemperate
AS someone who has played both.... I beg to differ..... In rugby your eyes are on the player's in front of you, so you hardly ever get hit from nowhere.... In Gridiron, you turn your back to play, and can't prepare yourself for the hit..... Therefore I would think gridiron would be more dangerous.... if played by the rules....

Physical? "british bulldog" is physical, but that doesnt make it a great game.....

Strategy, that I would agree with you on......
wunarmdscissor
yeah but subtemperate the fact is they wear body armour to protect themselves and this helps to counteract the blows that they receive.

I have played both and i found rugby much tougher,

in school we got both rugby and gridiron it was also since no1 here had a clue how to play it an whatever little rules we did understand didnt really help much lol...it just turned into a barney. lol

dont get me wrong it is a tough sport im not questioning that lol.
Subtemperate
Actually I have no love for american football (although I do follow a team my US friend follows... just dont really care)..... So I dont mind your opinion, just stating mine.... original.gif

You should look up Australian rules..... Its quite tough and fast.....
wunarmdscissor
yeah kno a wee bit about aussie rules very like celtic football.

Nah football is my sport im not into playing the hard hittin sports lol.

Kinda like to know that tehres little chance of me goin home an sufferin an anuerism lol

I think it's clearer you didn't get what I was trying to say....I was saying I thought US football struck a happy medium in terms of both physical punnishment and strategic play (football and Rugby being the polar extremes on one of those each). I meant that it was more physical than football (not Rugby) and more strategic than Rugby (not football).

Having seen both alternatives at one time or another, our football seems to be a case of: ball goes forward...ball goes back...ball goes forward...ball goes back....ball goes forward...ball goes back...ball gets passed to keeper...keeper kicks it out...ball goes back.

Rugby on the other hands seems to be just an endless stream of passed down the line until one guy breaks though huh.gif Little too straight forward for me.

It's footballs emphasis on finesse instead of hard hitting action that's made me turn up my nose at it...the reason I've never been to live game is, after seeing it on tv, I don't consider it worth spending money on huh.gif

wunarmdscissor
Sorry for hijackin yer thread peeps .

But see.....

I did get what your saying.

You just dont understand rugby or football. thats all....if you dont take the time to learn about a game then you cant criticise the make up of it.

Its your choice if you dont LIKE a game toally up to you but unless you really understand the GAME then you cant really comment on its innerworkings IE tactics etc.
Subtemperate
So if I have the same critisisms? Since I have played soccer, rugby, Aussie rules and Gridiron...? original.gif
wunarmdscissor
yeah i never said you never had the right to comment though i just disagreed ..

Whereas sera mocks football regularly and she doesnt understand the game.

Clearly she doesnt understand rugby either.;-)

Hmmmm.... would have thought that was like saying you cant have an opinon on food because you dont know how to cook... original.gif

Go the eagles..... (trys at least to get thread headed back on track)

oh come on sport is A LOT more complicated than cooking. ;-)

Talon
I agree with Sera on that game being enough to make someone want to go look for a US football game on Sky Sports grin2.gif . Also caught a game of Austrialian Football a few weeks back, and found it very engrossing, I actually stopped everything I was doing to watch some team in white thrash some team in black.
snuffypuffer
Okay, watched part of the Hall of Fame game Monday night, and all I can say is..... the preseason sucks.
Triniant
I think the panthers have a solid defense, but last year was a fluke. Playoffs, maybe, superbowl, not this year.

I agree the pre-season does suck, especially when you lose a starter for the season.

How about the dolphins? Wow, they look like they are in some trouble. Good for those AFC fans.
snuffypuffer
Unless they're Dolphin fans, then it's pretty bad. Poor Dolphin fans. Speaking of which, do you think Dave Wannstedt is as inept as I do?
Triniant
Hey, he was great as Dallas' defensive coach, but I think it is time to move on. They have a had bit of bad luck during his tenure(that's why he is still coaching the dolphins), but he has been too close, too many times and has a hard time even getting into the playoffs.

What about the Falcons and Vick? Is he the one everyone is waiting for, or just another might be/could've been?
snuffypuffer
I don't know about Vick, he's got lot of hype around him, but I still don't see him taking the next step. If he can get some players around him, then I think I may buy the hype, but there's no such thing as a one man show in the NFL.
Triniant
QUOTE (snuffypuffer @ Aug 13 2004, 06:05 PM)
but there's no such thing as a one man show in the NFL.

Agreed.

September is almost here and according to the major sports websites, the patriots are still the favorites. Any thoughts?

My opinion, I know they are the reigning champions, but nowadays in the NFL it's not about the king of the mountain anymore, but the slayer of the king, the pats aren't going to repeat.
snuffypuffer
I'm sticking to my pick of the Patriots repeating, they've only gotten better, and the only thing that could get in the way of a repeat is possibly injuries. Although the Eagles, Colts, or, much as I hate to say it, Cowboys, could unseat them.

We'll never really know until the season's over, though.
