At 20 times the size of Earth, the largest sunspot observed since the fall solar storm onslaught is now pointed directly at Earth. Its unusually large size also means that it's now visible with the naked eye (although you should never look at the Sun without a proper filter). The implications of this spot have scientists on the edge of their seats - if the active region generates coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive explosions with a potential force of a billion megaton bombs, it will be a fairly direct hit to Earth and its satellites and power grids.

I guess there's still time for you to rush to the market and get yourself
1) 10 6-packs of beer
2) 10 cans of beens
3) 20 bottles of mineral water
4) Another 10 6-packs. (Just in case)

security systems, communications.. cars.. yes.. I'm well aware of the possiblities.. (Muahahaha) Police response times would be hours instead of minutes.. assuming they even knew, because without phones working..
not to mention the fact that depending on how bad of a pulse it is.. a lot of stuff (computers, and such) will be SERIOUSLY damaged.. much longer then 24 hours.. Hard drives would be damaged. Tape drives, and other magnetic storage devices would be erased.. Taking this into consideration, most phone service (not to mention internet) would be gone, for months or possibly years.. Most nuclear plants that aren't properly shielded from EMP would meltdown over a few weeks without computers to stablize to reactors.. Buried in Debt? No problem, considering almost everything is stored electronically..
Since this would come on a shoke wave most sats would come plummeting back to earth.. life wouldn't be over.. just life as we know it..

Great post
If that were the case I bet we could muster a fight that would dwarf all of the battles of WWII...
