This is kinda mean, kinda sad, and kinda funny.. I need to share..
My younger sister had a hampster that she could no longer keep, and being the lover of all things animal, I took it in.
It's been in my house for well over a year.. and my cats all love the thing.. The hampster has been let loose many times while I was cleaning her cage.. and The cats have always been in a "what the hell is that thing?!" type of mood when she's loose..
2 hours ago, while I was cleaning her cage, the hampster was in my shirt pocket.. but when I went to dump the bedding in the garbage can, I set her on the counter.. not a cat in sight
The next thing I notice was an orange flash running out of the kitchen, and the hampster was gone?!
Malora is orange.. so I had a good idea what happened. I ran after her.. and caught her in the bedroom laying on the bed with the oh so innocent "pet me" look on her face..
I went to pet her, and instead picked her up by her scruff, only to see a fairly shaken hampster underneath.. Malora did a quick flip + scratch at my face (got me too) and slipped out of my grasp.. She grabbed the hampster, and took off under the bed..
two seconds later, i heard a squeak, and squeal, and malora hauled ass out from under the bed. Fearing the worst, I picked the bed up, and peered underneath..
Out walks ole hamptaro.. face slightly bloody.. I picked her up, and brought her to the bathroom to clean her, and inspect the damage..
after washing the blood off.. i was shocked to find the hampster uninjured.. and almost on cue, she pulled a small piece of orange something out of her mouth.. She stood up on her hind legs, holding this piece of fur and flesh above her head as if it were a trophey. The whole way back to her cage she did nothing but stand tall, showing the evidence of her victory to the world.
With the hampster safely secured away, I went to find the attacker turned victim.. and I found her on top of the fridge, cowering behind a box of cereal..
I pulled her down and cleaned off her face.. there's a nice sized piece of flesh gone from her forehead.. but she was otherwise uninjured.. I stopped the bleeding, and betadined the wound.. tomorrow, she goes to the vet to get it checked.
Hopefully, she learned her lesson..

That is a great story, thanks for posting it.
Boy, cats are just not made like they were in the old days.
You are going to have to send your cat to therapy to get over the inferiority complex that it is mustering up whilst hiding behind the cheerios on the top of the fridge. I am sure it is running though the adventure in its mind trying to figure out where it went wrong.
Poor cat...thumbs up to the hamster though, wow quite a show. I am sure it is going to be telling that story to its grandkids; although I doubt the will believe him...

alas , my younger sister once had 30 hamsters ( Im not joking ) She failed to close their cages every now and then
My pet : Black 42 in long ( including tail ) 30 lb tabby .
Neighborhood dogs : stop barking when they see him .
Average survival time of escaped hamsters - 2 minutes at most .
Whats strange is my cat would eat everything except their butts .

Something like that happened with my pet rats. Since the day I got them, my cats have always been at the cage trying to work out how to get them. Oneday one of my cats Dax manage to get his paw through the bars, and next thing I heard was a cat scream and run.
I checked the rats, one had blood on his face, so I cleaned him up and found no visible marks. I put him back and went looking for the cat and found a nice like bite mark in his paw. So I cleaned him up.
To this day Dax still tries to get to the rats, and he sits by the cage waiting and watching, but the rat has learnt who is king. All he has to do is charge the cat, and Dax is going in 5 seconds flat

It's not even that doomy..
My cats LOVE this hampster.. I have few pictures of malora and the hampster curled up sleeping together.. All the cats have bathed the hampster, played with the hampster.. they've even brought toys to her, and dropped them in front of her, kinda like making an offering to the rodent..
I cannot recall a single act of aggression against the hampster..

Doomy I know..
It's still funny watching my GF run into the bedroom as the animals were under the bed.. she was weilding a broom to get malora off the hampster..
Fluffy: Yea your right. But the hampster escaped halfway through a 2 week mexican vacation last fall, and the cats never hurt it.. My mother (who came over to feed the cats) reported the hampster sleeping in the cat's bed with them..
/shrug.. still kinda funny, and I'll never forget Hamptaro showing her trophey off with all that pride..

I have a couple of cats that are indoor only, they have never been outside. We put a birdfeeder about 6 inches outside the living room window for the cats entertainment. We get chipmonks, squirrels, and every kind of bird coming to the feeders.
Scruffy is laid back and doesn't want to do anything more than just look at the birds outside the window. Mittens however is all cat...she is forver bonking her head on the window trying to get to the critters. One day a mouse found its way into the house. Both of the cats heard the mouse and went to investigate, when Scruffy saw the mouse he dashed off to the top of the fridge in fear.
Mittens grabbed the mouse and went to town. By the time I got the mouse away from her she was covered in blood(from the mouse). She strutted around the house for the rest of the day.
The two cats were raised together, but they are totally different when it comes to the hunting instinct. Mittens would be fine is she were on her own in the wild...Scruffy on the other hand would be lost...

Smart little buggar of a hammy! Once my cat Moocher (16) got really pissed with our male cat Mozart ran into the main bathroom shredded the toilet paper.
And then ran around to find Mozzy and then BAM! The poor stupid spawn of Satan (Mozart) got into hell from Mom. You see Moocher (the good one) chased Mozzy into the bathroom and then he got tangeld up in the toilet paper!

I dunno about the stealing things...but they certainly do bite and stink.
My friend has a couple of ferrets....and I must admit, I consider them the biggest waste of money, much like her rabbits were. They spend all day in their hutch/pen/thingus, and the only interaction they have is at feeding time, the occassional petting, cleaning out the hutch/pen/thingus, and when she wants to show them off to unfortunate people like me
For a while, my fingers were a criss-cross of scratches from their claws and teeth, as they clearly did not like being taken out of their home one bit...the larger of the two also smelled slightly of vomit

I think it's because most people prefer pets that are capable, in some way, of interacting with them...that's why cats and dogs are the most popular. Lizards and frogs don't tend to do much of anything...ever tried playing fetch with an iguana, or getting a bullfrog to hop after a ball of string?

That is horrible

Ferrets are as social as dogs and cats are. Mine NEVER bite. They don't stink. They roll around at my feet when they want treats.
Yes, they do steal things. Not all of them, but they usually have a "hidey-hole" they like to put things in like socks and their toys. It's instinct.
They sleep in a cage but they're always out when I'm home, so they get plenty of playtime and exercise. If they're kept in their cage constantly it causes major psychological problems.
That really upset me. A couple of my ferrets came from people like that, I really had to work to make them happy and gain their trust.

It doesn't matter if the cage is big.
Try locking up a cat for a few days and tell me how it acts. If they don't get out to socialize/play/exercise you will have very unhappy and agressive ferrets. Actually, that goes for any pet.

Yeah, indoor cats are fine

I meant locking up a cat in a "cage" or keeping it confined to one room where they can't explore or beg for attention when it needs it. It's just really bad for them, and they act out as a result.

Bah. Me and Disinterested have 4 of them. She was the first one to introduce me to how wonderful Ferrets are. I knew a guy before hand who, althrough he had a pretty big cage for them, he had two ferrets who were nasty and smelly and biting. Why? Because he treated them AWFULLY.
Ours are incredibly loving. They NEVER EVER bite, they don't smell one bit because we reguarly clean them and their linens, and athough they steal stuff it's because it's a fun game more than anything.
Ferrets are wonderful wonderful creatures. They play with you just as much as any other animal, they roll around, you can teach them tricks, they dance for you, they curl up with you if they're tired etc. I've built a little city of boxes for them and they love diving in and out and playing chase. They also wrestle with each other for hours, SO awesome.

Sucessfully raising previously abused and mis-treated ferrets is a daunting task, DI, I applaud your dedication and efforts. Far too many pet owners are ill informed or simply can't be bothered with learning how to properly care for their pets by providing a safe and healthy environment. I'm a little jealous of the time you're enjoying with your ferrets now, but only because they bring back wonderful memories from my past experiences. Sadly, my freetime is severly limited anymore, so I'm forced to endure the unpleasantness of 'ferret' envy.

Yeah, i remember when i first met Dis she had a ferret called Bonnie, who was locked in her cage for the first 2 years of her life, NEVER came out once. Stuck in a garage under a bunch of stuff. She raised Bonnie with such tenderness and affection that that little girl lived a very pleasant life. At first she was very timid and shy, but by the time i met her she was very friendly and loving and whatnot.
Sadly, she and another of our ferrets died about 6 months later. She was getting on abit though.
We got two new ferrets, who were obviously poorly treated. Their previous owner knew NOTHING about them, said they didn't like being touched or playing. We've found that they are loving and love cuddling, giving kisses and playing. They were biters at first, but with the right atention you can ween them off biting altogether. Now they're getting along just fine with our other two.
It just goes to show you that if you're going to get a pet you need to know the basics first.
