I really want to get a discussion going on this...

I had this idea today, it's only a little teeny theory at this point, but I think it could make a lot of sense.

What if Jesus was pressured into being the Messiah and all? Mary obviously wouldn've known about all the prophesies, right? So what if one night she has a dream, which is in the bible, and decides that based on the dream her son is gonna be the Savior. Then, as soon as Jesus is born, all he hears growing up is Messiah this and Messiah that. So he ends up believing it himself, and then, to make his mama proud, he goes and tries to fulfill as many of the prophesies as he can, because he's been bombarded since birth by the idea that he's the son of god.

Falco Rex
That's actually a very interesting concept. Jesus certainly seemed to show enough instances of self-doubt in the Bible to at least make it worthy of consideration..
Not to mention that Judaea was full of would-be Messiahs around that time period. It might not be all that unlikely that a Woman with a strange pregnancy would become caught up in the prophecy fulfilling mania..
snuffypuffer
And a strange pregnancy would be the best way to single him out as the most likely to be the real messiah. Mary would only have to tell a few people about her dream to give credence to the idea, with the climate of the times and all.
BurnSide
Eat your beans Jesus! How are you going to grow up big and strong and become the messiah if you don't eat your beans!?

but Maaaa!!!

don't you BUT MA mee!!

I like this idea. The thing is around the time, is that many things happened the did not understand. They didn't have an understanding of how and why things happen like we do today. If we knew the real events as they happened, it would probably be easy to explain. For example, Jesus wasn't walking on water, he was on a rock the guys didn't see. He didn't feed 10,000 people from one laof of bread, he had a truck parked around the corner, etc etc.

Mary got pregnant somehow. She claims she never did the nasty, but we'll, anyone can claim that. All mothers have dreams of their boy becoming president, mary simply pressured jesus into becoming messiah.

It's kind of like domestic violence. You raise your son and let him see you hitting his mama, he's going to grow up hitting his wife.
snuffypuffer
I have a thought that maybe, just maybe Joseph wasn't the first man Mary had ever been with, and rather than crush him with the truth, she made up the whole virgin birth thing. Jesus was more or less stuck into going along with it.
BurnSide
Hey maybe!

Or maybe it was all a money making scheme, kinda like Amityville.

Come on, the mother of the son of god is obviously gonna be set for life.
snuffypuffer
nah, I prefer to think it's a form of Mary redeeming herself for perhaps being unfaithful. I mean, what better redemption than being the mother of god?
BurnSide
didn't jesus have a brother? what happened to that guy?
snuffypuffer
Brian? He got a movie made about him, remember?
BurnSide
haha Life of Brian. What an awesome movie.

Was he Jesus brother? I thought he was just some guy born in the stable next door.
snuffypuffer
No he was his brother, felt kinda overshadowed.
BurnSide
oo. Been to long since i seen it.
Always look on the bright side of life.

we're hijacking our own thread, man

Actually, back then "virgin" refered to an unmarried girl, rather than our understanding of it. Joseph probably was Jesus' father.
Kismit
Actually it is possible that Jesus had more than one brother , here ..

Mark 6:2-3 says: "And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! "Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?"

Brian was not the Messiah's brother Snuffy , he was just a very naughty boy ....

BurnSide
So he had several brothers AND sisters?

So Mary was actually popping them out! So what made Jesus more special than the rest of them?

Could you imagine living your life as the BROTHER of the saviour Jesus?

*at a bar*
"Yeah, i'm James Flippin Christ, whoppdiedoo. GIMME ANOTHER DRINK!"
snuffypuffer
Well, as the firstborn, Jesus would probably have been the one to take the most crap. Ack, it was a good theory, anyway.
saucy
So Jesus walked up to the Romans and said that it was prophesied for me to get crucified and they agreed to do it so after being beaten and tortured for 12 hours, then hung bleeding to death, he managed to remember the seven phrases it was said he was going to say. Also, Jesus paid Judas to betray him and John to deny him three times and talked to the Caesar to have all the Jews lay down palm branches in front of him as he rode into Jerusaleum. It's all possible. rolleyes.gif
snuffypuffer
No, what we're saying is that Jesus had grown up believing he was the Messiah, and it became a self fulfilling prophesy. he believed he was gonna do it, so therefore it happened.
BurnSide
..huh? What does the actions of other people have to do with weather or not his mother imposed it upon him???
saucy
I don't think so, but it's possible. An angel came down and told Mary she was about to have Jesus, so maybe Mary telling him he was gonna be it influence him.
snuffypuffer
but what we're saying is, what if it wasn't an angel, and Mary only had a very vivid dream?
BurnSide
What if the angel was an ALIEN who abducted Mary, impregnated her with an Alien and eraised her memory so she gave birth to an Alien/Human hybrid which looked human but had alien powers?

The angel didn't just visit Mary. He also visited Joesph.
BurnSide
What did the angel tell Joe?
snuffypuffer

Well, this is a lively, if not irreverent discussion.
When I saw the topic, though, I thought it was referring to Mary Magelane.
Have any of you heard/read the theory that Jesus and Mary M. were actually married, and that they had offspring?
This is the theory behind the book Da Vinci Code, which is, I contend, purely fiction, but many take it seriously.

Matthew 19-21:
QUOTE

Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

I guess it's possible Mary could've gotten him really drunk and had a friend dress up as an angel and tell him Mary was going to have Jesus, and then he woke up and thought it was a dream. grin2.gif Or, well, you know, Gabriel could've been an alien.

Oh, by the way - they recently found a burial box with the inscription "James, brother of Jesus, son of Joseph" somewhere in the Middle East...ah, here we go, an article. I find it highly probable that Mary had kids after Jesus - there's nothing in the bible that says she didn't. People who argue that she remained a virgin her whole life have no "proof" (I put this in quotes because it's hard to consider the bible true proof) that she was.
BurnSide
Mary M. was a hooker. Kinda goes against everything the bible stands for, so no christians will ever say that it's right. However, i believe it is so.

Mary and Joseph were married, after all, you really think they just sat around and played Scrabble?

that does bring up a funny picture, though, Joseph coming home and wanting to fool around....

Joseph "Hey, baby, let's fool around for awhile.."

Mary "Not tonight, hon, I'm not in the mood."

Joseph, upset "Bet you never said that to God!" then goes and sulks.

Mary Magdelene wasn't actually a prostitute, it's just the way she's been portrayed over the years. She was actually a disciple, and the theory that she and Jesus were married has been around for awhile, it didn't just show up in the Da Vinci Code.

artrox
Burnside, was Mary M. a prostitute?
Does it actually say that in the Bible?
I have read that in the formation of the early church, it was decided to discredit her with that title in order to establish a heirachy of male dominance.
In fact, she was probably a disciple on equal footing with the other male disciples.
The Gospel of Mary can be found on the Internet. It is very interesting, though only fragments have survived. In it, Mary conveys messages from Jesus, given to only her. The other disciples are resentful that she would have been singled out by Jesus, and also resentful because of her sex.
Married to Jesus and having offspring...who can say. It's just a theory, but those who believe it say Mary was secreted away to France and his lineage survives to this day!
snuffypuffer
Yeah, what he said...

Exactly.

All them vestive virgins.. they did the sex thing, just not the married thing.

You were a virgin untill you got married and had kids.

Heck you could be unmarried, have a kid and still be a virgin.

Semantics, semantics, ruining my precious theory crying.gif

Yeah... People do realize that the Bible states
that Jesus was not the result of intercorse between
Mary and Joseph right? I hope you people understand
what the Bible is trying to say.... (sigh)
Seraphina
The bible says a lot of things, none of which can actually be confirmed as the case, especially when Jesus is concerned. All we know is that he (probably) existed, and that he (probably) was crusified...although even this has recently been called into doubt.

The idea of Jesus deliberately setting out to fulful the prophosies set for the Messiah is a perfectly resonable one. That's assuming he even did so...it's also perfectly reasonable to assume those who wrote the new testament, as is doting followers, simply said that he did to facilitate the spread of their beliefs.
saucy
Yes, Mary had another son named James. Yes, it's in the bible. Yes, Mary M. was a prostatute (sp?) until Jesus came around and saved her from that kind of lifestyle. No, they didn't get married. No, they didn't have kids. Mary was just a loyal follower of Jesus just like the rest of disicples.
snuffypuffer
You know, an interesting tidbit of information, is that in some verses Jesus is described as the son of God, and in others, he's described as the son of Man, which would imply that man and god are the same thing, wouldn't it?

Why is it so hard to accept that Jesus may have been married?

i had posted this org. in the Jokes forum, topic "Virgin Mary" July 1st,2004

QUOTE
What if Mary was raped either in her sleep or otherwise. Coming form a Middle Eastern culture, I have to tell you, that being raped, is always your (the woman’s)fault, and can be punished by stoning, or being cast away form your family. Isn’t that more believable? Not wanting be send away or stoned, she came with the idea that an angel appear to her.

I remember a documentary in A&E; it had two very interesting points;

1. That Mary was in the immaculate child, not Jesus.
2. That the translation of "Virgin" could be false. the word used in hebrew acuallty means unwed and not a virgin.
snuffypuffer
If you've ever read the comic Yummy Fur, Chester Brown does a really excellent version of the nativity, the scenes with Joseph agonizing over whether to divorce Mary or not are particularly excellent thumbsup.gif
