I've read about few theories related to the Serpent Mound in Ohio, one is that the snake was the totem of the local indians and they made the snake and positioned it in such way that it will protect them. Another theory is that indians in their constant migrations made the snake as a border or Eastern Gate to mark their territory.

i visited a place once in northeastern Iowa (about a two hour drive from the Wisconsin Dells) called Effigy Mounds, the have many-much smaller- versions of the same thing. they come in all shapes and sizes, bears, birds, snakes, etc. the park tells visitors that they were ground totems, meant to protect. i dont know where they got that idea though. then they had these dumb little set-ups of fake indians like you would see in a museum display, except outside. sweet bike trails though, definitely worth a visit. and yeah, as far as im concerned the reason they were built is still mystery. because its a "State Park" they cant even dig up the mounds to see if there is anything cool buried there.
