I know the topic seems to be one from a preschool fairy tale, however since I was a young girl these fantasy creatures always seemed to interest me. Are there any other information about them (besides greek mythology) indicating origin?
Any additional info would be very much appreciated :)

PIXIE,
A very good search engine to use is the one found at www.google.com. It has a database of approx. 1.4 billion websites, so you get a huge number of possible hits. Just enter mermaids origins into the search box and hit enter. You should get tons of info for your research.

*sigh* mermaids. I have wished i was one since i was a little girl. They fascinate me to the full extent. I would love to learn more about them too. I wonder if there is any documented case of someone accually seeing them. Well, Christopher Columbus saw some, but they were later proven to be Manatees.

The Little Mermaid is one of my favourite ever Disney movies so I looked up the original story, and it was so different and quite scary! Have you checked it out?

Yes, she dies. turns into sea foam. I like the moral of the original alot better than disney's. Disney says, "if you change yourself to be with a man. than you will live happily ever after."
The latter has a more realistic conclusion.

Ha ... I loved mermaids after seeing "Spash". I wanted to be one so bad when I was little too!
I used to sit in the bathtub with salt added waiting for my tail to appear.
I was a very naive child.
I finally gave up a few months ago...

Splash is still one of my favourite movies, although the ones one after was a total let down. The way they did the mermaid's tail really made me think it was real, and the way she swam was so graceful, I was juts left wishing to be a mermaid!
