yay! snakes!

there was that story about a guy camping and he woke up to find a snake eating his leg, it had got right up to his groin, but couldnt go further cos it had only taken one leg in. his leg had to be amputated cos of the extent of damage done. dunno if its urban myth or what

I had a good friend who was into snakes for a while. He had a python that was about 5 foot long that he had to feed rats to on occasion, which his kids found facinating to watch the snake eat.

I came to the conlusion that I do not want pets that require me to witness the circle of life and the food chain in action on a regular basis. I don't mind snakes mind you, I just don't see how people consider them pets...

I have a couple rules of thumb for pet selection:

1 Must be furry.
2. Must be cute.
3. Must be petable.
4. Must not be able to kill or injure myself or other family members.

Snakes, spiders, and the like just aren't pets for me...they are cool, and I understand why people like them, I just don't understand why people choose to have them for pets...

what about that 49 foot python they caught in indonesia? 49 foot long and 983 pounds?

they may look big and slow, but when they strike they are fast, and STRONG!

Nah, that snake was nowhere near that long. Closer to half that size.

Sounds like an urban legand.

Let's see, Betsy is furry, she is cute, you can pet her (if you can get her to come out of her hole) and she isn't able to kill or injure anyone so I guess she is the perfect pet. She is my tarantula. She lives in a ten gallon aquarium in a tunnel of her own design 2 inches under the top of the soil, which fills the aquarium up about half way.

bit of info....

According to natives and explorers, there is a gigantic snake in the bowels of the Amazon. Some sort of "inland sea serpent". It is generally regarded as some sort of anaconda, since other boids do not spend as much time in the water. There are apparently three types of animals involved in this story, according to Heuvelmans. The first is an animal with phosphorescent eyes as big as saucers and vertical undulations. Heuvelmans connected it with a zeuglodon, but never went into depth. The second animal is some sort of burrowing animal, possibly a caecillian or a glyptodon. But the third is most likely the giant anaconda. It's coloration is identical, blackish brown, dark rings, and oval spots. It's size is supposedly quite astounding, specimens well over the 100 foot mark have been reported. One 80 foot monster ate 4 capybaras and an ox. Two photographs of two different snakes were taken and ended up in Manaus. Amazingly, they were developed by the same man in the same shop. It has been pointed out that the shop was the only place for a good distance, so it is a little more probable. The first snake was 95 feet long and weighed two tons, it was shot on the Brazil-Colombia boundry and crushed small trees when wounded. The second picture is of a snake 110 to 150 feet long near Fort Tabatinga, which required some 500 bullets to kill. The two photos are not detailed, so it is difficult to tell if they are hoaxes, exagerrations, or the real thing. The stories of the giant anaconda are very hard to find, and the animals behind it may have been depleted or significantly reduced.

Courtesy of "Strangest Creatures of the World" - George Kensinger

'Records of reticulated pythons nearly thirty feet long (9m) and weighing more than 250 pounds (113.4kg) have been substantiated, and there was also a reported kill of a thirty-two-foot (9.8m) python. Authenticated reports for the anaconda (Eunectes murinus), a much heavier snake, are twenty-five feet (7.6m) in length and a weight of about five hundred pounds (226.8 kg). Natives of the tropics have always insisted that much larger anacondas still live in the wilds, and a few years ago an engineering party in colombia killed and MEASURED A 37 1/2 FOOT (11.4M) SNAKE, their record now accepted by many authorities. The snake was not weighed, but it is ESTIMATED THAT A THOUSAND POUNDS (453.6KG) WOULD NOT BE EXCESSIVE FOR AN ANACONDA THIS SIZE.'

Wow!

i can only see one head, i guess the other head is hiding, or i just can't see it....

maybe this explains some sightings of giant snakes curled up....

I think one is sitting on top of the other's head. For some reason, they don't seam to mind stuff like that very much. rolleyes.gif

Originally known as Cryptophidion ammense, this snake was known only from reports and one extremely good photo taken in Vietnam. Within the last year, however, this snake has been found elsewhere in south east asia. This picture taken in the Alaungdaw Katapha National Park, west of Mandalay, by Hla Tun, shows the stunning color of the Cryptophion ammense, now know as Xenopeltis unicolor or the Sun-beam snake.

I don't know if this is real or not, but here's a pic I found online. Here's the story; Giant Congo Snake, taken by a Belguim helicopter pilot on patrol over the Congo. Estimated length of 40 to 50 feet, and the triangular head was 2 by 3 feet!

Yes, it is genuine. I saw the photo and the photographer on Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious Monsters. The man said the snake raised 9 feet (I think) and tried to strike the copter.

A word to the wise: If you don't speak Spanish, don't try to start a conversation about giant snakes in their homeland with two South American men you happen to meet in the laundromat. blush.gif

They must have misunderstood me, because they wanted me to go back to their hotel room so they could show me. blink.gif

i do love that picture, thanks for posting it... thumbsup.gif , thats one of my fave pictures...i've said this before on another topic, but theres 2 snakes in that picture, the main one and a shape to the right that looks like another snake...i've highlighted it, its smaller but i reckon its a second snake...

user posted image

Yeah I like that picture too and that second shape does resemble a snake, the way it twists and all but surely the pilot would have seen it and mentioned a second one?

It could just be shadow of uneven ground plus the sun isn't shining on it like on the other one.

user posted image

Now if you ask me, the shape that I've highlighted in the green box looks more like a second snake. You can see a 'hump' and where the head is and if you magnify it you can see it a bit more clearer but it blurs into the surrounding land a bit but that could just be cos of the angle and its an old B+W pic.

No offense Halo, I'm not trying to crap on your discovery. Maybe there are 3 snakes there cool.gif

I want to know this: What kind of person see's a snake that large and decides, "Hey Jim, wanna go pick that sucker up?"

ooooooh 3 snakes, i never noticed that other shape before...

i always thought the snake i spotted was under some sort of bushes/grass hence why its harder to make out and may be missed, while the main one is out in the open...

hmm, I never noticed the other 2 shapes before. but about some of the giant snakes, I'm willing to bet that the snake appears so long because it stretches out. Now, I know Halo is sick of me saying this, but as many of you know (sorry Halo tongue.gif) I have a pet anaconda. Now, most of the time she looks like she is around 6 feet. I know becasue I've measured her several times. But when she crawls across the ground, she can sometimes stretch out to around 8 feet! ohmy.gif I have measured her several times to test and see if this theory is true, and it appears to be. Now, if this snake can "Extend" more than 2 feet at times, couldn't it be possible for a larger snake to extend even further?
