The body of a child buried 2,000 years ago has been discovered in a field by archaeologists working for the TV series Time Team.
The skeleton of the child believed to be aged around 10 was found near Stonehouse in Gloucestershire during the three-day dig.
The skeleton, from an iron age farm, will now be analysed by experts who will try to determine its sex, diet and how it died.
Time Team archaeologist Matt Williams said: “It was a bit of a surprise to find a body at the site at all.
“We knew of the sight but to find the skeleton was a bonus.
“The actual skeleton was a bit of a mystery, it was buried in a flexed north-south position which indicates it was a pagan burial.
“The skeleton appeared to have been buried nude as there was no evidence of clothing and there was no jewellery or grave goods with the body.”
Gloucestershire County Council’s sight and monuments record officer Tim Grubb said: “This is a very important find. They’ve uncovered a Romano-British iron-age farmstead.
“We knew the site was there but until the Time Team excavated it we weren’t sure what was in it.”
The dig will form part of the new series to be aired next year of the Channel 4 programme, hosted by Tony Robinson.
