Right click and go to the screen where you change the Screensaver/background etc settings. You should be able to select a tab called 'Display Settings'. From there you can change the colour of the surrounding area around the text on your desktop. I'm assuming it's currently set to white.
I'm not good with this stuff so that's only what i know, i'm sure others will be able to gove you a more direct explanation.

Like burnside said, in the display settings, there is a bit u can change that bit. It should show u in the little picture what each tab changes so u can see if that is the right setting. I'm at work at the mo and we arent allowed to access the display settings, but i'll have a look at home tonight, if u are still stumped by it then!!
Good luck!

P.S. if u are totally stuck, there may be a click to "restore default settings"....but ONLY as a last resort as it will restore all the display settings to bog standard XP settings.

Hi,
Rick-click on properties, go to Display/Advanced then scroll down on Item to Desktop. There's a little box there to change the color of the desktop. Change it, and the desktop background along with the icon background whill change to the color you select. Don't go to icon because there's no option there to change color. If you have a desktop picture which fits the screen and doesn't show up the desktop color you will see the color of the icon background, otherwise it is invisible.
