user posted image rAstronomers have moved swiftly to quell speculation they may have received a deep-space radio signal from ET. It was reported on the internet that the signal had been found using the Seti@home screensaver that uses computer downtime to analyse sky data from telescopes. But researchers connected with the project told BBC News Online on Thursday that no contact with extraterrestrials had been made. "It's all hype and noise," said its chief scientist, Dr Dan Wertheimer. "We have nothing that is unusual. It's all out of proportion." And Dr Paul Horowitz, of Harvard University, who specialises in hunting for possible alien contacts added: "It's not much of anything at all. We're not investigating it further."

For six years, the Seti@home project has used a downloadable screensaver on millions of computers around the world to sift through data for anything unusual. The data has been collected by radio telescopes scanning the sky for any unusual signals from space.

Well that's too bad.

Sounds like some sort of cover up tbh. Seeing as earlier they were all happy now they seem as if they've been told to be quiet.

True, reading what Dr Dan Wertheimer said in the original article to what he's saying now, well, thats one hell of a turn around.

Of course it's a cover up. When anyone makes a small mistake it's a cover up. No matter what they say, you people will always say it's a cover up.

OOP!! I made a typo. No wait, i went back and edited it. ....
Must be a cover up. ph34r.gif

So I'm lead to believe that its very possible that they had received a message from far off. Its amazing 1000 light years? How many miles is that? If it was a civilisation that sent that. It could be dead and finished by now. Just thinking about us sending out radio and other signals. I thought damn what if that civilisation was like ours? Thinking wow it could take as long as it did for them for our message to reach other life and we might be all gone by that time. I mean humanity.

if i were SETI i would try and make more hype out of it. That way they'll get more funding.

Seems like a useless project to me. All this time and not one interesting signal...

Dowdy has a good point, if they had found something, you would think they would go around advertising it to obtain more support and then funds to continue their project.

God, this report broght my day down.. even though I agree with the rest of you that it may be a cover up story to avoid maybe people who dont want to reserch it more? like protest or somthing? or maybe they dont want a panic? I dont know..

oh crap that one signal was nothing? 1000 light years away? I think I read on another sight that was like 31 million years ago. uh yeah id say their dead by now.
