I live in a small two bed-room house. It was built in the 40's, and has a furnace capable of heating only the living room and kitchen. During winter, I use portable heaters to heat the bathroom and one of the bedrooms which I use as an office. The bathroom is pretty small- just large enough for the sink, toilet, and shower. It is this one little room that my story centers...
I like to sleep in the living room on my hide-away bed so I can watch TV- and be close to the heat vent. One night, while I was sleeping, I heard the toilet flush. In the colder months, when you flush the toilet, the pipes will rattle for about 1/2 hour. I checked things out, but didn't find anything odd... other than that the toilet had flushed itself. I simply shrugged- too tired to worry about it, and went back to sleep.
Every night for about a week this went on. I thought it was odd, and decided to see if there was some sort of pattern to it. By the end of the next week, I saw one- it would flush around 4:00 AM every morning. I called a plumber, who couldn't figure out what was going on. He suggested replacing the toilet and pipes- but I knew the landlord couldn't afford it at the time, so I declined.
A couple of nights later, I heard the toilet flush, and a new sound I couldn't identify... kind of a tittering and a shuffling sound. Curious, I checked out the bathroom. Turning on the light, I saw the last of the toilet paper from the roll disappearing down the toilet. Not wanting to take any chances, I locked my toilet paper in the cabinet. Toilet paper's not cheap after all.
By now I was getting the feeling that maybe I wasn't completely alone in the house... though if there was "someone" else there, why were they acting up now? I'd been living there for about 3 years before these things started happening.
I came home one night; after taking off my combat jacket and beret, I went to take a piddle. In the middle of the room was a small pyramid of toilet paper rolls, with the screen from my window balanced by one corner on top. I didn't need this, so I said, "Don't play with the toilet paper, please?"
The flushings continued for about another month, and then just stopped. It's been a year since the last occurance.
