Link didn't work for me. I do know that Lake Superior is famous for shipwreks because it is a relatively shallow lake and gets really high waves.
mr_halo
site for you...few shipwrecks...

As far as I know Lake Superior is not very shallow thumbsup.gif . The most mysterious shipwreck of the lake is the Edmund Fitzgerald. When the ship (Hull 301) was launched it splashed in the water making huge waves, causing a spectator to have a heart attack and die. The ship was lost on Lake Superior in Nov. of 1975 (i believe). No survivour were ever found, and no reason for her sinking was ever given. The coast guard report gave examples of what could have sunk her, however there was no evidence to prove their claims. When people visit the wreck it is said some see ghosts in the piolt house glass. Also people have claimed to see the Fitz as a "ghost ship" in foggy or stormy weather.

I believe it is the shallowest of the great lakes.

Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes (averaging only 62 feet) and overall the smallest by volume. Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes in surface area and volume. Lake Superior could contain all the other Great Lakes plus three more lakes the size of Lake Erie. original.gif

I am one who hates to say, "I saw it on Discover Channel", so I won't. Mainly because I saw it on History Channel. They found the remains, retrieved the ship's bell and the Board of Inquiry's findings were that the hatches were caved in by heavy weather, the ship took on too much water and sank. Nothing mysterious about it..... huh.gif

Boats sink. There's hundreds of thousands of shipwreaks all over the world, what's special about this?
Joe013
there was no point. there was no need to be rude, i just thought it was a cool piece of information that everyone might enjoy reading.
BurnSide
Sorry if i sounded rude, it wasn't intended. What i ment was, is there something special about this wreak.
Joe013
oh

sorry burnside! grin2.gif

and as for this wreck, there's nothing special about it.
BurnSide
Fair enough. grin2.gif
In my hometown there was a small lake with a wreak. The ship had mysteriously gone down in fog, nop bodies were ever recovered.
Supposedly their bony arms can be seen at the bottom on a clear day travelling over the lake, reaching up to drag other ships down with it.

Just a silly townsfolk legend. original.gif

thats pretty cool. i grew up in england. so no real local legends there, except the puma that roams across the countryside. grin2.gif

My hometown is in england. Brixham, Devon.
The small lake mentioned is in the Moors, close to Dartmouth.

Hold on. Dont ever say there is nothing mysterious about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I told you divers have said that the ship is haunted. I told you that people still see the ship sailing as a "ghost ship". It disappeared in a storm. Another ship was following behind the Fitz. The last words from the fitz were, "we are holding our own" ...and then she disappeared off the radar! That's pretty mysterious. To be that close to another ship and be completley swallowed by the water...with no distress signal sent. Which means the ship sank within seconds. There is also controversy of whether the ship broke apart on the surface or once she hit the bottom, since she is cracked in half. An explorer filmed a dead body (skeleton) at the bow of the ship, where other divers had never found any...and its debated on whether the body is from the Fitz or another older wreck, and just drifted in. When the search and rescue team, located the wreck of the fitz...the bouies that they laid down were crushed by the waves, and the rescue vessel was taking green water over the sides. Through the remainder of the coast guard investigation, the search and rescue vessel, reported an errie calm on the water...the captains words were "It's almost an errie feeling. The dog wouldnt even bark. If you believe in ghosts, well you can think of that too." The Myster of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald....is just that, a mystery.

the legend lives on
from the chippewa on down
of the big lake they call gitcheegoomee
the lake, it's said, never gives up her dead,
when the skies of november grow gloomy

the edmund fitz, laden with tons of iron ore, found itself
in a wicked storm, and only fifteen minutes from port, but the construction
of the ship, it was one of those long frieghters, according to study of the wreckage, cracked in the middle under the stress of the middle of the boat being lifted up by a huge wave, bow and stern both down bending the shape of the ship, and snap, it broke apart and sank.

at five after ten, the ships cook came on deck
he said, fellas it's too rough to feed ya.
and later on, when the bulkheads fell in, he said, fellas it's been good to know ya.
