A German truck driver smashed his lorry into a parked car after wrongly thinking it looked like a get-away vehicle.
The 46-year-old from Duisburg then called police and proudly told them he had foiled the crooks' plot to make a quick getaway by disabling their transport.
The man, who admitted later he "may have over-reacted", spotted the car parked outside a bank at Ohlsdorf in Austria.
He glanced inside saw a crowbar and other tools lying on the back seat.
Convinced he had spotted a crook's getaway vehicle and that the criminals were about to escape, he ran to his lorry and drove it into the side of the car, leaving it a write-off.
He then called the cops to report his bravery, who raced to the scene just as the car's bemused owner, a father of four who is a self-employed carpenter, returned to his vehicle.
Instead of getting praise for his actions, the lorry driver now faces a £4,000 fine and losing his licence, plus the cost of repairs to his own vehicle.
