This is a prime example of why I have 3 rules for any pets I may own:
1. Must be cute.
2. Must Be petable.
3. Must not be able to harm/maim/kill myself or any other pets.

I am sorry, but I find it hard to be sympathetic towards this woman. Common sense tells you that you should not keep deadly wild animals in your own home. The whole idea behind having a shelter in the first place is to keep undesirable things out...

I am sure a Darwin award is in order here.

CINCINNATI, Ohio (AP) -- Zookeepers helped police search for venomous and exotic pets in a house where a woman was fatally bitten by a viper.

Alexandria Hall, 44, was bitten in her home Monday and died at a hospital Saturday, police said.

Neighbors knew she had pets, including rabbits and birds, but were unaware of her collection of at least nine poisonous snakes and more than one dozen other snakes, lizards and alligators until police went to the suburban North College Hill house.

Police believe an urutu pit viper bit the woman Monday, and neighbors said she drove herself to a hospital. She was transferred to University Hospital, where she remained in critical condition until her death Saturday evening.

"We have no idea how she made it to the hospital in the first place," said North College Hill police Sgt. Robert Kidd.

Reptile specialists from Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens searched the house with an ambulance waiting outside in case a venomous snake attacked.

They found more than a half-dozen large lizards running around an upstairs bedroom. The venomous snakes were in secure plastic cases throughout the house, police and zoo officials said. Non-venomous animals were found under boxes and piles of clothes.

I was reading about this too.

I couldn't imagine having something so deadly. What if it got loose while I was sleeping? I couldn't do it.

Worst I have to worry about are ferrets crawling under my sheets and nipping my toes.

Here is a little clarification;

Some people love reptiles though. I had a friend who has a collection of snakes, tarantulas, geckos, etc.

Then again, he's one of the wierdest people I know....

I would hate to be the one who had to search that house for loose, dangerous animals.

Have to agree with you Fluffy, but some people think my Alaskan Malamute is a very dangerous pet to have. Sssshhhh....nobody told him that he's one of the top ten most dangerous dogs. laugh.gif

I once thought about having a tarantula but you can have their venom taken out.

Tis a sad stae when pet owners fail to mimick the antics of the Crodcodile Hunter.

It's fine to have pets like that if you can take care of them. That woman was obviously not well with her pet's special needs. There are definate consiquences for such things.

Didn't this happen somewhere else not to long ago? Remember the guy who had all the spiders and snakes and the like....I think a black widow spider bit him in the night. What is with these people?

There was also the guy who had the tiger and the alligator in his NYC apartment. I mean come on, really! Where is people's common sense?

(And how the hell did he get them into his apartment in the first place?)

I had a pet scorpion a couple years ago. It was like the 5th most poisonous scorpion in like the whole western hemisphere. I kept it inside a little mouse carrying case (the plastic ones), inside another tank. In the bigger tank we had a couple lizards and some frogs and toads and stuff. One of the toads was poisonous if you touched its back when it was scared, but we left it alone. My grandparents found it in Florida and brought it up to NY with them. It ate crickets like twice the size of its body.
