Disinterested

At work, three of us were talking about forcing kids to eat certain foods that they don't like. It all started when one of my co-workers came up to me and a work buddy and started talking about how he forced his son to eat a tomato. His son finds them gross, and nearly gagged just from looking at it.
Then both me and the other girl gasped, and told him how he shouldn't do that. Then we both told him stories about what happened when we were kids and forced to eat something. For her it was an escargot, and mine was the bit of fat from a steak.
Anyway, basically my question is: Did you have to go through this as a child, and do you feel it was wrong of your parents to do so?
It seems to be something that is done very often, but it also seems to be one of those "bad" memories every child has. Thoughts?

I was forced Brussel Sprouts. Every kid was right? Well my mother cooked them in such a way that the ends were never cut off and they were ROCK hard. I'd break my teeth trying to eat them so i wouldn't get a slapped bottom.
One day we went to a restaurant to eat and i had to eat my sprouts and they were cooked perfectly, juicy and soft, and i've loved them ever since.

Dumplins. I hate them. Mom used to make it all the time and would make sit at the table until I finished. The worst part was the longer I sat there the colder they would get.

For me it would have to be tomatos. My Dad grew them in the garden and made me eat them. They are my least favorite food because of it.

pork chops, we had them almost every other night. then one day I was sick and my parents thought I was lying to get out of having to eat them. I threw up all over the dining room table. That was also the last time I ever had to eat them
For my kids, no I don't force them to eat foods they don't like, only if they're trying to get out of dinner to eat junk food instead.

I dislike more food now than I did then, but the one thing I hate is squash. I hated it then and do now and my parents still make me eat it.

. I once made my eldest boy eat baby apricots and rice , he didn't like them much and I didn't care . He spent the next few days on anti-hystermines (SP) .
Sometimes very young children know when there body won't react well to a certain food .
Simple solution :' if you finish your dinner you can have pudding/reading time / 20 minutes on the computer . ' this way it is allways the childs choice , I love choices .

Cauliflower. God I hated it. This one time I was forced to eat it and the next day I had the flu for like 3 weeks. It probably didn't cause it but I was little and I thought it did. Still dislike cauliflower to this day.

perhaps there ought to be a group meeting for Survivors of Force-fed Children.
Dr Fred. " let us start by sharing our first forced experience."
Mr X " The first time i was forced to eat food I said' daddy do you think this is right?" But he just forced my mouth open and put it in. He made me chew it up by moving my mouth with his hands. it was squash. SQUASH !! I was just a child dad ! How could you !! SQUASH I TELL YOU !!! "
Dr Fred. " Good Mr. X. It is always good to let out those feelings of rage. Something you must all remember is that depression is rage tunred inwards....."

Yup! My Mum always used to tell us to mash them up & mix them with carrots. I grew to like them though. Absolutely love them these days in a roast dinner with a bit of gravey.

I was lucky, my parents never made me eat anything. When I went away with a neighbour though I was forced to eat everything on my plate and must have sat there for an extra hour past everyone else, I was a mess by the end of it.

I'm not surprised that most people have had to eat foods that they despised as kids.

Anybody have any theories on why parents do this?

Brussel sprouts.
I hated them they are the single most disgusting thing ever. I think it was a tortute method my parents used to get past child protection laws.
Seriously there musta been millions of us out there.

Not necessarily. It seems that everyone has this
one food that they hate. And they're parents seem to get their kicks by making their children eat that food.
It's like if I forced you to eat celery. You don't like it, but I don't shove it down your throat telling you it's good for you.

Yeah but burnside there are far less offensive vegetables we could be forced to eat.
I mean my parents took delight in the disgust on my face.
Especially if id been a pain in the arse that day , which i frequently was lol.
Cant blame em really .
