I have a computer approx. 4 years old, runs windows 98. I have used dial up internet for the four years and have not had that much problems. I have been using walmart connect for quite a while and have not had much trouble. But lately I have been losing my connection quite a bit. I have done all the regular things , reinstalled my internet adapter, tried different dial up numbers. and these things dont work. I wish that dsl was available in my area but it is not. I would like it if anyone has any ideas on what the problem, might be. Also i was wondering if it could be my modem, but someone told me that if your modem is dialing up alright that it is ok, but i also thought that your modem also helped you keep the connection. I would appreciate any input that you might have. I have already re-installed my windows 98, i do it periodically to keep things running right.

What's the error message? Do you have a fax or something like that on the same line? Have you tried dialing up on a different phone jack? What anti-virus do you run; and when did you last update it? Are you really really sure you have the phone cord plugged in tight?
But above ALL!!!! What is the error message?

Find a good diagnostic program. But like crosswarrior says what is the error message....

For one, tell us the errors. Also, I personally would trust AOL a hell of a lot more than Wal-Mart Connect *scowls* but if it works, then by all means use it, although again, I reccomend something else. Your disconnecting problem is most likely not caused by your modem, but by software. I've also noticed that more RAM has helped my friend have a more stable connection, and RAM also helps pages load faster. It also could be on Wal-Mart's end, or whatever you are connecting to. *Scowls at Wal-Mart again*

Try another ISP service, AOL trial for instance, if your modem doesnt disconnect that means is an ISP problem.....

When it comes to dial-up,i think they're all about the same.If wal-mart is cheap, then use it....
Have you checked your connection settings lately johnnyrunon?Check your connection properties and make sure under "idle time before hanging up" isn't set.I make sure mine says "never"....mine has the option of choosing between one minute and 24 hours. If yours is set for a certain amount of time and you're doing alot of reading(being idle) it WILL disconnect.

Theres a number of explanation
1.It might be your internet service provider disconnecting you because some ISP disconnect some people who used a long time when there servers are full.
2.IT could be your telephone line there might be lots of interruption with your connection the solution is try unpluging other phones or fax machine and try keeping radio sources away from the phone line.
